USk Hohenlohe - Meeting in Gaggstatt - Jugendstil in Hohenlohe

 

Our little group of Urban Sketchers planned to meet in Gaggstatt for sketching the fantastic Jugendstil church there. I was there a few weeks ago to check the location and did three fast sketches into my A5 sketchbook in really good weather.

By then I was attracted by the tiny figures at the front gate and sketched one of them.

 

Then I went to the side of the building and tried to do one of the towers from a  weird position, which was quite fun with just a splash of sky into my sketchbook.

 

As we met now in November, it was a very cold and overcast day. Jutta said we had 3 degrees Celsius. She brought herself some hot coffee, which was clever. We had hat and gloves and blankets for not freezing too much. Andrea came too, but sadly she did not stay long. 

I like the architecture of the church and the story behind it. It is also worth looking inside. It is beautiful. Here is the architectural story: HERE

I decided to sketch from the back side of the building on my A3 blog and made my pencil sketch first:

My thoughts at that time: Which colour combination would be useful for this very grey sky? I chose a mix of cerulean and siena with a dab of violet. I put down my first wash. In this fall weather the colour needed endlessly to dry. 

 

After a bit more than an hour I was frozen to the bone and so were my fellow painters. We went inside the church, but did not draw any more. A good place to come back in warm weather to explore it further. 

 What a cool experience.

Für nächste Woche habe ich die Idee mir selbst als Thema "Memory of Madeira" = "Erinnerung an Madeira" vorzugeben, denn da wir gerade nicht reisen können, können wir immer noch träumen und malen...

Watercolour Portrait Sketch - Monanina No. 9

First I would like to say that the portrait is looking alike from the nose up, but the mouth and chin are different from Monanina. I did not want to correct it, as in watercolour this will lead to a mess. Accept and try again, I would say.

As for the colour part I again used a reduced palette. The five colours are indicated above. The colour winsor violet I did not know so far and am astonished how good I could use that one for shadow parts and in mixtures of cad red in the receding skin parts. 

The manufacturer indicates the following: Winsor violet (Dioxazine) is a vivid mid-shade purple pigment. When undiluted, it can be used as a deep black. It is a transparent coal tar pigment.

The colour combination of the five colours indicated above looks quite fresh and the flesh tones I could get out of the combination of cad-free red and cad-free yellow pale (W&N) is very much to my liking.

Zuerst möchte ich heute betonen,  dass das Portrait von der Nase an hochwärts tatsächlich Monanina ähnlich sieht, aber der Mund und das Kinn stimmen nicht. Ich wollte nicht herumkorrigieren, denn das endet meistens im Disaster, also lass ich es und versuch es bald noch einmal besser zu machen.

Von der Farbseite her habe ich wieder eine reduzierte Palette verwendet. Die fünf verwendeten Farben stehen oben. Das Winsor Violett hat mich überrascht, denn ich konnte es gut in Schattenpartien einsetzen und auch in Mischungen mit dem Rotton verwenden.

Der Hersteller gibt folgendes dazu an: Das Violett (Dioxazine) ist ein lebhaftes, mittleres violettes Pigment. Wenn es pur verwendet wird, kann es als tiefes Schwarz eingesetzt werden. Es ist ein transparentes Kohle-Teer Pigment.

Die Kombination der fünf oben angegebenen Farbtöne wirkt frisch und für die Hauttöne ist eine Mischung aus cad-free red und cad-free yellow pale (W&N) eine gute Wahl.

Watercolour Portrait Sketch - Tom

Today I was more spontaneous and did not note down the colours I used. Instead I focussed on the light and shadow parts.

This face is lightened from the right, front side and half of it is in shadow. The important part is to leave white or just slightly coloured parts in the places where the light hits the skin and darken the rest of the face. Therefore the first question for me is always from which direction the light is coming.

Heute bin ich etwas spontaner drauf und habe einfach losgemalt, ohne mir die verwendeten Farben zu notieren. Was mich heute interessierte, waren Licht und Schatten. 

Dieses Gesicht wird von der rechten, vorderen Seite her von einer Lichtquelle erhellt. Der wichtigste Aspekt, um das darzustellen ist, dass man die hellen Hautstellen tatsächlich weiss oder nur ganz leicht farbig beibehält und den Rest des Gesichts abdunkelt. Für mich ist daher die erste Frage immer: Woher kommt das Licht!

Watercolour Portrait Sketch - Amanda + NEW PAINTING CHALLENGE

Another sketch this time with a darker skin tone. Mixed yellow ochre, browns and some light pinkish tones to get this skin colour mix. It is not the colour itself, it is the intensity that makes some parts receding and others to come forward within the facial landscape. It is like modelling with a brush.


Wieder eine Skizze und dieses Mal ein etwas dunklerer Hautton. Dafür habe ich Ocker, Brauntöne und Pink miteinander vermischt. Aber es ist nicht nur die Farbe, sonderen deren Intensität, die es bewerkstelligt, dass manche Partien nach hinten gehen und andere nach vorne in der jeweiligen Gesichtslandschaft. Es ist so ähnlich, wie eine Art modellieren mit einem Pinsel.

For this sketch I went into yellows and oranges and tried colour combinations for the shadow and receding parts of the face.

Für diese Skizze verwendete ich viele verschiedene Gelb- und Orangetöne und probierte Farbkombinationen für die Schattenpartien und die weiter hinten liegenden Teile des Gesichts aus.

Portraits are fun. The colours of the skin is different for every person. There is no fix formula, just trial and error or long tested methods. Is my painting theme a compensation for not being able to meet friends right now?

Portraits machen einen Riesen-Spaß. Die Farbe der Haut ist bei jeder Person etwas anders. Da gibt es keine feste Regel, nur Tests helfen hier weiter. Ist mein Thema vielleicht eine Kompensation dafür, dass man keine Freunde mehr treffen kann?

Greedy

This lemon tart tasted fantastic. I seem to be greedy, ... and enjoyed every bite. 

As for drawing, a colour I rarely use is light turquoise, which I used here for the background. I thought it would fit very well with the yellow-orange of the tart. I darkened the shadow parts with ultramarine.

Diese Zitronentart war super. Scheinbar bin ich ganz schön verfressen...aber ich kann sagen, dass ich jeden Bissen genossen habe.

Was das Malen angeht habe ich heute eine Farbe benutzt, die ich sonst nicht so oft einsetze und das ist ein helles Türkis für den Hintergrund. Die Farbe macht sich gut zu den gelb-orangenen Partien des Törtchens. Die Schattenpartien habe ich mit Ultramarin abgedunkelt. 

Mucha Doodle

When I was in Prague in February I visited the Mucha Museum and bought a few postcards. Yesterday evening I doodled a bit around checking Muchas colour palette. He got a lot of earthy tones in his paintings, although I used a few greyish mixtures as well the majority of colours are brownish-red-orange. The only true unmixed colour is in the round middle right behind the face which is a lemon yellow. 

Als ich im Februar in Prag war, besuchte ich das Mucha Museum und kaufte ein paar Postkarten. Gestern Abend kritzelte ich ein wenig rum und sah mir Muchas Farb-Range etwas genauer an. Die meißten Farben sind tatsächlich Erdtöne. Ich hab auch ein paar graue Mischungen verwendet, aber die Mehrzahl der Farben sind im Bereich Braun, Rot und Orange. Die einzige nicht gemischte Farbe ist das Zitronengelb im Kreis hinter dem Kopf der Figur.

Watercolour Portrait Sketch - Roli

Time to catch up with my portraits sketches. I spend more time with that right now and here is a watercolour portrait sketch of Roli. I believe it looks quite alike. I will continue with that as it makes me happy and as long as I draw I forget about bad things and am in another world.

In letzter Zeit mache ich wieder vermehrt Portraits. Hier ein Aquarell Portrait von Roli. Meiner Meinung nach sieht es sehr ähnlich. Mit den Portraits werde ich weitermachen, denn wenn ich Male bin ich glücklich. Da vergesse ich all die schlechten Nachrichten und bin in einer anderen Welt. 

Lange Strasse - Crailsheim

...still the same day and we went to the other side of town in search of a new subject. The rain was getting stronger and in search of shelter we went into Biotop. From here the view into Lange Strasse is very nice and I did a fast sketch sitting by the window while sipping a coffee. So far so good.

At that time, there were already reduced numbers of people in town. Most of us do not leave the house any more in these times but we continue to be creative. Stay healthy.

...es war noch immer derselbe Tag und wir gingen auf die andere Seite der Stadt auf der Suche nach einem geschützten Platz zum Malen. Leider wurde der Regen noch stärker und wir flüchteten ins Biotop. Von dort aus hat man einen schönen Blick auf die Lange Strasse und ich machte eine schnelle Skizze in mein Skizzenbuch. Kaffee gabs auch, versteht sich...das Papier wellte sich etwas, aber sonst war alles gut.

Zu dieser Zeit waren bereits weniger Leute in der Stadt unterwegs. Jetzt, da fast alle Menschen Zuhause bleiben, bleiben wir trotzdem kreativ, denn das lenkt ab und macht gute Laune. Bleibt gesund.

Cherry cake and first week of #uskathome

Still have a sketch from my time before I went to Madeira. It is a cherry cake with streusel which I did not post so far.  I could use all my fancy pink watercolours for this. 

This is our first week at home in Germany as schools and most  companies are closed. We are doing good.  We will not geht bored. There are lots of things that can be done around the house without any contact to others. This might be the advantage of living in the countryside. We wish all friends to stay healthy. 

Found  a few sketches from before, when  outside sketching with friends was still possible and will post them in the next few days. Btw you can post your homesketches on #uskathome

Vor Madeira habe ich bereits dieses Aquarell von einem Kirsch-Streuselkuchen gemacht, den ich vergessen hatte zu posten. Für das Bild konnte ich all meine fancy Pinktöne verwenden. 

watercolour sketch - snowdrops

Snowdrops in the city park of Schwabach. There are like carpets of them. How beautiful. This is an example of negative painting in a fast watercolour sketch.

Schneeglöckchen im Stadtpark Schwabach. Es gibt dort richtige weisse Blumenteppiche. Sehr schön. Das ist ein gutes Beispiel für eine negativ gemalten Aquarellskizze.

Watercolour Portrait Sketch - Jacky

A few days ago Jacky sat outside the Café and waited patiently for her owner, who had some coffee inside. I was sitting at the window and could easily sketch her. My first sketch was nuts, but the second attempt was ok. I used all the colours remaining in my mixing palette. It was a sort of clean-up.

Vor einigen Tagen saß Jacky draussen vor dem Café und wartete geduldig auf ihr Herrchen, der im Café saß. Ich selbst konnte sie gut von meinem Platz am Fenster aus sehen und skizzierte sie. Die erste Skizze war nicht gut, also probierte ich es nochmals und jetzt bin ich zufrieden. Für die Skizze habe ich die Farbreste auf meiner Palette verwendet. Meine Palette sieht nun wieder einigermassen aufgeräumt aus.

Shadows are colourful - not black!

A few weeks ago I spoke with my painting friend Adelheid (see one of her paintings HERE) about shadows. Since then I thought it would be a good help to explain how I try to create my shadows in watercolour. (This post reflects my personal experience.)

The little pitcher is a nice object to explain how shadows can be made in watercolour. Some people use black or grey, but in my opinion these often create very flat washes.

I used three primary colours to show that a mix of them is often the better solution. The colours are red, ultramarine blue and yellow ochre. I showed the mixtures of two primaries in the little circles, which display at the overlapping form the complementary colour to the opposite pitcher.

Shadows create depth and form and often help us to give a sense of a three dimensionality. They show, where the light comes from and where the dark has to be.

and a cast shadow (besides the object)

There are a few different methods to create shadows in watercolour:

In the below drawing I just used yellow ochre as a base, but it can be done with any colour.

My favourite method is the latter as it creates the most vibrancy and looks more natural than the other methods. I would say I usually even exaggerate the shadow colours, therefore my shadows are colourful!

Vor ein paar Wochen habe ich mit meiner Malfreundin Adelheid (hier ein Bild von ihr im LINK) über das Malen von Schatten gesprochen und seitdem dachte ich mir es sei mal an der Zeit hier im Blog auf dieses Thema einzugehen.

Manche malen die Schatten einfach schwarz oder grau, aber für mich ist das Ergebnis zu flach. Um zu erklären, wie ich es mache habe ich einfach die kleinen Töpfe oben mit den Primärfarben versehen. Die Mischfarbe der gegenüberliegenden Töpfe ergibt die Komplementärfarbe. Eine Mischung dieser wiederum mit der Ursprungsfarbe ergibt für mich den besten Schatten. Bei Fragen oder Vorschlägen hierzu meldet euch gerne bei mir. Danke Adelheid für die Anregung. 

Gerne könnt ihr mir in den Kommentaren mitteilen, wie ihr normalerweise Schattenfarben herstellt.

Little Pitcher

This little pitcher is from the sympathetic pottery in Gründelhardt. I could not resist drawing it before I give it away to a friend.

Dieser kleine Krug ist aus der netten Töpferei in Gründelhardt. Ich konnte nicht widerstehen, ihn zu malen, bevor ich ihn verschenke.

Btw wanted to state that I tried out a waterbrush for some of my drawings in Madeira as well as in Prague and could say the following:

PRO: It is more handy at times and can be used anywhere where you have to be quick or could not use a water container (i.e. museum or the like).

CONTRA: It is not as precise as a real brush and I was not able to achieve the darkest darks I wanted to get. 

In my opinion it could sometimes be a plus to have a waterbrush, but at this state it will never replace a good watercolour brush.

#2020PragueSketchFest - Café Imperial

On my last day in Prague I still had time to go to Mucha Museum and have a Hazelnut Cake at Café Imperial. Did some private sketching before leaving. Btw the cake was fantastic and the surrounding stunning. Had to leave which is a bit sad as I liked the creative marathon each day, the people and the surroundings. Have to come back soon.

An meinem letzten Tag in Prag hatte ich noch Zeit ins Mucha Museum zu gehen und eine Haselnusstorte im Café Imperial zu verputzen. Etwas Zeit war auch, um den Kuchen zu malen. Der Kuchen war fantastisch und das Café sehr schön. Leider musste ich wieder nach Hause fahren. Es war ein kreativer Marathon, jeden Tag zu malen. Ich werde die Leute, die Umgebung und auch das Extremsketchen vermissen. Muss bald mal wieder kommen.
