Hélios Visit - next sketch-stops: 1. At the station, Crailsheim, 2. Kirchberg

 

Sketching in best weather very close to Crailsheim station was real fun. There was some music playing, the workers out there were very nice and we could walk around everywhere and sketch. The left sketch is Hélios and the right one is mine.

 

The day before we have been in Kirchberg where I made a quick sketch of Marlene in the castle café.

 

Waiting at Café Frank

 

I had my beautiful Koval Sketchbook (Fabriano 300 gms paper inside...super watercolour quality) with me when waiting at Café Frank for a family member. This was my breakfast which I sketched in less than 20 minutes.

My upper watercolour shows the beautiful gate of an old cemetery (Ehrenfriedhof) close to Volksfestplatz in the middle of Crailsheim. I like the large trees there and the little chapel inside is worth a visit.

Ich wünsche euch allen ein friedvolles, entspanntes Weihnachtsfest und vielleicht findet ihr ja auch etwas Zeit zum Malen.

Mein oberes Bild zeigt das schöne Tor am alten Ehrenfriedhof in der Mitte von Crailsheim. Ich mag die grossen, alten Bäume dort und es gibt eine kleine, sehenswerte Kapelle.

Sunny November Day / Sonniger Novembertag in Crailsheim

 

A sunny November day in Crailsheim, close to a tower called Diebsturm. Used a colour called sepia, which I never used, just for playing and mixing the shadow areas. 

Ein sonniger Novembertag in Crailsheim, in der Nähe des Diebsturms. Für die Schattenpartien habe ich die Farbe Sepia verwendet, die ich sonst eigentlich nie verwende.

Urban Sketchers Hohenlohe - Johanneskirche Crailsheim

 

The only one to show up on this USk meeting was me, as my sketchfriends called me, that they regret not being able to come this time. As I entered Johannes Church, I felt the calm inside, although the heating and the lights were off. Just a few candles at the altar made for a warm shine. 

 

First I went up to the Empore, where the large organ is and sketched from there, not being able to see my colours properly - it was quite dark. 

 

In the photo you can see, how dark it was. What a surprise to see the bright colours of my sketches later in real light.

 

The decoration of each pillar was different. I went down the stairs and drew a fast sketch of the rear part of the church. 

 

No noise - total calm ... I was the only person. Lots of good memories in my mind. I thought of the many Christmas Masses, I spent here in my childhood. I remember lots of real candle lights and the huge, beautiful Christmas Tree they always had with the handmade straw stars. I imagine Choirs singing here and I felt that this is a good place...also for sketching...

The lion figure you see above is in the front of the church. My last sketch below is another ornament on one of the columns.

The colouring of some of my sketches was made at home, as I could not do all in this short amount of time. I will go back there soon again. I was having what we sketchers call a "flow" in this relaxed surrounding,... totally on my own, doing what I like best.

 

Mood of the day sketch - Jagst

The idea came with Christmas Season that I wanted to sketch an instrument which is very much related to the season. My next subjects is "Instruments de musique = Musical Instruments" and I am happy that I sketched the organ of Johanneskirche in Crailsheim. Very fun and fast sketch. Very reduced and focused on shady parts of the instrument.

Unser nächstes Thema war "Musikinstrumente" und aufgrund der Weihnachszeit kam mir die Idee die Orgel der Johanneskirche in Crailsheim zu malen. Eine sehr schnelle Skizze, die mir Spaß gemacht hat. Man musste sehr viel vereinfachen und einfach auf Schattenpartien achten.

Crailsheim - Entlang der Stadtmauer

 

Today I try to paint part of the old city wall of Crailsheim which are in the inner west circle. The colours of the beginning winter are more muted. I am not in the mood for that so I planned a more colourful approach. 

Heute an diesem zweiten Advent male ich ein Aquarellthema aus Crailsheim: Turm und Häuser entlang der Stadtmauer im Westen der Stadt. Die Farben draussen werden langsam etwas grau-brauner, ja es ist Winter. Ich möchte aber nicht grau-in-braun malen, weshalb ich mir wieder eine kleine Farbpalette zurecht gelegt habe, nach der ich mein Aquarell geplant habe.

Den kleinen Turm, den man auf dem Bild sieht ist der Zeughausturm.  Lt. SWP wird der Zeughausturm schon in Stadtrechnungen von 1446 erwähnt und dort aufgrund seines Standorts als "Türmlein bei der Stadtmühle " bezeichnet. Seinen jetzigen Namen hat er vom ehemaligen Zeughaus, das direkt daneben angebaut war. In diesem Gebäude wurde städtisches Werkzeug und Kriegsgerät gelagert.

Crailsheim - Villa

 

Had about two hours on a sunny November day for sketching so I went up the slopes to the so called "Villa" on top of the little hill on Wilhelmshöhe, Crailsheim. Had a beautiful view and enjoyed the sun. 

There were just a few other people out here for leisure walks. Besides this everything was quiet. You can enjoy one of the best panoramic views of Crailsheim from this scenic point. But my goal was to draw the villa as long as there is still some sun. It gets dark very early now and I had to hurry anyway. A very nice afternoon for me.

An einem sonnigen November-Nachmittag hatte ich knapp zwei Stunden Zeit, um den geschlängelten Fußweg zur Villa hochzuklettern zur Wilhelmshöhe in Crailsheim. Von dort aus hat man einen sehr schönen Blick auf die Stadt. 

Mein Ziel war aber die Villa selbst zu malen und ich wusste auch sehr schnell von wo aus und begann. Husch, husch, denn es wird hier schon sehr früh dunkel und ich hatte nur wenig Zeit.

Was braucht man mehr, als ab und zu eine Auszeit zum Malen.

Crailsheim - Jüdischer Friedhof (am Karlsberg)

 

The good weather on a sunny Saturday Morning in November made me change plans and instead of working at home I enjoyed the calm atmosphere of the old Jewish Cemetery in Crailsheim. It is a bit morbid you might think, but I really like the beautifully carved stones that stand somehow in lines, but some of them are already leaning to the sides. It gives a certain rythm to them.

 ...and I truly love the quietness on those cold sunny mornings.  Gloves are necessary to the equipments these days and I bought some simple thin cotton ones to have a good feel for my watercolour brush.

The grass was still green and a bit wet by then and the evergreens with the tombstones make for a good contrast of red and green.

Meine Pläne für den Samstag im November habe ich total umgeworfen und mit meinem Malrucksack das Haus früh verlassen, denn die Sonne schien schon sehr früh. Die Zeit muss genutzt werden, dachte ich. Der alte jüdische Friedhof stand schon lang auf meinem Plan, also fuhr ich hin. Es war eine sehr schöne Stimmung dort und die kunstvollen Grabsteine in rotem Stein waren ein schöner Kontrast zum grünen Gras und den immergrünen Sträuchern. Es war schön ruhig und angenehm in der kalten Morgensonne zu sitzen.

Handschuhe waren ein Muss und ich hab mich schon daran gewöhnt dünne Baumwollhandschuhe zu tragen, die bei der Pinselführung nicht stören. Unten noch ein Gesamteindruck der Umgebung:

 

Crailsheim - Hinter'm Bullinger Eck

 

New month, new luck. The trees lost their leaves and if there was not the red of the building the watercolour would be very wintery and not as colourful as it is. I omitted the new stones and terrace in front...

Neuer Monat, neues Glück. Die Bäume sind bereits ohne Laub und wenn die knalligen Farben des Bullinger Eck nicht wären, sähe man nur die eher zurückhaltenden Farben des Winters. Die grossen Steine der neuen Terrasse habe ich weggelassen.

Breakfast Break

In this café sketch, I used the same colour scheme as I did in the last one, but this time with people having their coffee and pretzels for a short breakfast break. Now in the month of November it is not any more possible to eat out as of the actual distancing rules hereabouts.

In diesem Café Sketch habe ich dasselbe Farbthema wie gestern verwendet. Es sind Leute bei Ihrer Frühstückspause abgebildet. Jetzt im Monat November ist es leider nicht mehr möglich sich im Café zu treffen.

Crailsheim - Bäckerei

An outside sketch of my local bakery. This is where the good pretzels come from, I so often sketched. I love the smell and the look. If you are around, try them.

Eine Skizze meiner lokalen Bäckerei. Hier kommen die guten Brezeln her, die ich so oft gemalt habe. Wenn ihr mal in der Nähe seid, müsst ihr sie unbedingt probieren.

Crailsheim, an der Heldenmühle

My schedule was tight in between two appointments. I had about two hours left and my sketchkit was in the car. It made sense not to drive too far. I decided to go to Heldenmühle, Crailsheim.

A shady spot by the water of river Jagst would do. Drawing water is a real fun for me. As I sat there I could hear the noises of the quarry and a few trucks went over the small bridge nearby. 



Der Zeitrahmen war knapp zwischen zwei Terminen. Mir blieben knapp zwei Stunden. Die Maltasche war wie immer im Auto und ich überlegte was Sinn machen würde an diesem sonnigen Tag. Gerne wollte ich etwas mit "Wasser" malen und auch im Schatten sitzen. Ich entschied mich für die Heldenmühle.

Dort im Gebüsch am Rande der Jagst war es schattig und ich hatte einen Blick aufs Wehr.

Vom Steinbruch her hörte man laute Geräusche aber ausser ein paar LKW's, die über die kleine Steinbrücke fuhren, war alles ruhig.

The weather was splendid as Katharina and I arrived at Crailsheim station. We got the allowance to go wherever we wanted in the station area. It was my first "Social Distance Outdoor Sketching" since the last Sketchmeet in the beginning of March.

Katharina is well known to me as she was one of the organizers of the USk Germany Meeting in Augsburg. She came to Crailsheim to draw with me and we decided to refresh the sleepy USk Hohenlohe group. We are determined to meet again soon.

Our first subject was the old black Lokomotive. Later Katharina drew the watertower and I did the engine shed. We also received a short guided tour through the area by a nice train employee. Thank you.

Das Wetter war schonmal extrem gut, als Katharina und ich am Bahngelände in Crailsheim ankamen. Wir hatten die Erlaubnis erhalten uns dort frei zu bewegen, einzige Einschränkung: "geht bitte nicht über die Gleise". Das war mein erstes Social-Distance Outdoor Treffen seit Anfang März.

Katharina, die ich bisher nur vom USk Deutschlandtreffen in Augsburg kannte, hat sich auf den Weg nach Crailsheim gemacht, um mit mir zu malen. Wir haben beschlossen, dass wir USk Hohenlohe wieder etwas neuen Schwung geben möchten und wir haben weitere Treffen vor. 

Am Bahngelände springt einem zuerst einmal der Wasserturm und dann natürlich die riesige, alte schwarze Dampflok ins Auge, die scheinbar noch gar nicht so uralt ist. Sie wurde erst nach dem Krieg gebaut, als es bereits E-Loks gab, hat uns ein netter Lok-Führer erklärt. 

Wir saßen also zuerst bei der schönen Lok, denn das Motiv ist für mich kaum zu toppen.

Danach suchten wir uns einen Schattenplatz mit Blick auf den Wasserturm für Katharina und für mich auf den Lokschuppen.

Ich poste hier das unfertige Bild, denn ich habs nicht mehr fertiggebracht. Gut, dass wir unsere Masken dabeihatten, denn ein freundlichen Bahnmitarbeiter (Förderverein BW Crailsheim) hat dann auch noch eine kleine Führung im Gelände mit uns gemacht und erklärt, welche Arbeiten sie hier ausführen und an welchen Waggons sie derzeit arbeiten. Herzlichen Dank dafür. Wir kommen sehr gerne wieder.

 

Das war der perfekte Tag für einen Urban Sketcher!

Lange Strasse - Crailsheim

...still the same day and we went to the other side of town in search of a new subject. The rain was getting stronger and in search of shelter we went into Biotop. From here the view into Lange Strasse is very nice and I did a fast sketch sitting by the window while sipping a coffee. So far so good.

At that time, there were already reduced numbers of people in town. Most of us do not leave the house any more in these times but we continue to be creative. Stay healthy.

...es war noch immer derselbe Tag und wir gingen auf die andere Seite der Stadt auf der Suche nach einem geschützten Platz zum Malen. Leider wurde der Regen noch stärker und wir flüchteten ins Biotop. Von dort aus hat man einen schönen Blick auf die Lange Strasse und ich machte eine schnelle Skizze in mein Skizzenbuch. Kaffee gabs auch, versteht sich...das Papier wellte sich etwas, aber sonst war alles gut.

Zu dieser Zeit waren bereits weniger Leute in der Stadt unterwegs. Jetzt, da fast alle Menschen Zuhause bleiben, bleiben wir trotzdem kreativ, denn das lenkt ab und macht gute Laune. Bleibt gesund.

Am Ehrenfriedhof, Crailsheim

Two weeks ago we had some sketching time outside. It was sunny, as I arrived at Crailsheim, Ehrenfriedhof to meet with my sketchfriend after work. We sat down in the quiet of the graveyard and sketched into different directions. My friend sketched the old crosses and tombs while I drew the entrance gate and the background with the towers, houses and trees. We sat there on the ground at about 13 ° Celsius as it began to rain. Too bad... I was not ready with my watercolour. We fled into the shelter of a Café to warm up. This was too short a visit. Need to come back soon. Here is my unfinished piece.

Vor zwei Wochen hatten wir nochmal ein Sketchmeet. Als ich ankam am Ehrenfriedhof in Crailsheim war es noch sonnig. Ich traf mich dort mit meiner Malfreundin. Wir machten uns ans Werk und hatten verschiedene Blickrichtungen. Mein Blick richtete sich auf das schmiedeeiserne Eingangstor mit dem schönen Hintergrund (Häuser, Bäume und Türme). Wir saßen bei etwa 13° Celsius in der Landschaft, was ganz ok war, aber leider begann es dann zu regnen und wir mussten ins nächste Café fliehen, um uns aufzuwärmen. Schade, das war mir ein zu kurzer Malbesuch. Ich komme bald nochmal zurück. Hier ist mein unfertiges Aquarell.

Sketching People at "Coffeetime"

It was one of my "everything-is-possible-thursdays" again and my sketching friend proposed to meet at a café in a shopping centre. As I entered I knew that there would be a lot of interesting things to sketch. I.e. different old coffee pots were displayed on the window sills and some people sitting sipping their coffees and at the bakery desk there was an ever changing flow of people. This would be a good opportunity to practice drawing people. 

My friend came and we first had coffee and cake like it is common in Germany on late afternoon. I started with a portrait of a man with quite a big moustache, sitting next table. He was so into talking to the man opposite to him, that he did not notice me sketching him. 

After they were gone I started with the bakery desk and the people here moved a lot - in and out - I had to sketch fast and draw a few things out of imagination.

Es war mal wieder einer meiner alles-ist-möglich-Donnerstage und meine Malfreundin schlug mir vor sich im Café eines Geschäftshauses zu treffen. Als ich reinkam wusste ich sofort, dass es dort einige interessante Motive geben würde wie z.B. die alten Kaffeekannen auf den Fenstersimsen und die Menschen, die dort vor ihren Kaffeetassen saßen und sich unterhielten. Das ist eine gute Möglichkeiten Personen zu malen.

Meine Freundin kam und wir hatten natürlich zuerst Kaffee und Kuchen, wie das in Deutschland am Spätnachmittag üblich ist. Ich begann mit einem Portrait eines Mannes mit grossem Schnurrbart, der am Tisch nebenan saß. Er war so damit beschäftigt sich mit der Person schräg gegenüber zu unterhalten, dass er nicht bemerkte, dass er gezeichnet wurde. 

Nachdem die Leute gegangen waren begann ich ein neues Bild mit dem Tresen und den Leuten, die etwas dort kauften und wieder raus gingen. Alles war ständig in Bewegung. Da musste ich beim Skizzieren schnell sein und auch ein wenig aus dem Gedächtnis malen.
