More Magnolia

 

The Magnolia subject is not yet out of my head so I sketched another one with a granulating background. That's it let's move on to new ideas and places...

Vellberger Magnolie / Magnolia at Vellberg

 

That week I was the co-host of our Landscape Art Group and sent in some photos of the wonderful magnolia tree we can admire every year at this time. I visit the place quite often and the best way to enjoy the beauty is to get an ice cream in the closeby icecream parlour and walk to the tree which is opposite within the fortified walls of the city and sit on a bench to admire this awesome tree.

 

Waterlilies 3

 

Here is another pond of a park in Dortmund, where the waterlilies were yellow. The blue water is a great contrasting colour. Thank you to my friend Natalia for another great reference.

As a contrast to the winter weather hereabouts, are some colourful waterlilies from a pond in Dortmund. Love the highly granulating watercolours and the play of contrasting colours.

Like a fresh spring breeze...It took me many espressos to get this watercolour done. I did not want to hurry and enjoyed the process. Thanks to Sarah Jane and Clive Nichols for the photo reference. Painting this one was a joy!

Viele Espressos waren nötig dieses Blumenbouquet zu malen. Ich wollte mich nicht beeilen und genoß den Malprozess.

Violets from my garden

 

In my garden and my forest grow lots of those lovely small violets in April. Finished this A3 size watercolour around Easter. Could not post earlier because of Sketchtour preparation.

In meinem Garten und im Wald gibt es im April zahlreiche dieser kleinen Veilchen.  Das Aquarell in A3 habe ich an Ostern fertiggemalt. Ich konnte das Bild aus Zeitgründen nicht eher posten.

This flower reminds me of my grandmother. What a lovely plant.

Diese Blume erinnert mich an meine Grossmutter. Was für eine schöne Pflanze.

MALTA: Sketching Wildflowers in Qawra

 

There was a great abundance of wildflowers this time of year so I dedicated one day to sketching them beside seaside kiosk.

Lately I am quite interested in botanical drawing. My sketch is far from that, but it was quite fun to throw colour onto paper.

In letzter Zeit interessieren mich botanische Zeichnungen. Meine Skizze ist natürlich sehr weit davon entfernt, aber es war klasse Farbe aufs Papier zu bringen.

Herbstzeitlose

 

Today I needed some strong colour. The pink of this autumn plant woke me up from this sleepy melancholic time. Outside it might be snowing all day. I am not yet prepared to paint snowscapes.

Heute hab ich etwas Farbe gebraucht. Das Pink der Herbstzeitlosen reisst mich etwas aus der Herbst-/Winter-Melancholie. Heute soll es den ganzen Tag schneien, aber ich bin noch nicht in der Stimmung Schneebilder zu malen.

...gleich knallt's!

 

In my childhood, we picked these nice white berries from my aunts garden and squeezed them. It makes a noise as you do so. This was childrens fun. Now, I simply find these a nice plant to have in the garden. Needed to paint it.

Als Kinder, pflückten wir die Schneebeeren im Garten meiner Tante und zerdrückten sie mit den Fingern. Das machte ein Knallgeräusch. Als Kinder lachten wir uns darüber kaputt. Jetzt finde ich die Pflanze für den Garten sehr schön...und natürlich zum Malen.

White Hortensia / Weisse Hortensie

 

Every new watercolour I do is my favourite during the process of painting it - you might have experienced the same feeling. It is probably what I would call "blindness of creation" which means that you are focussed on the process of the thing you do and love it. 

Only some of the formerly beloved watercolours can make it into my top list. Time will tell if this will be one of them. Btw, the granulation of the dark green background is something I really like.

Im Moment der Entstehung ist jedesmal das aktuelle Aquarell das, welches mir oft richtig gut gefällt. Wahrscheinlich kennt ihr dieses Gefühl. Es ist etwas, das ich etwas blumig die "Blindheit im Schöpfungsprozess" nennen würde, denn da ist man nur auf sein Bild konzentriert und man genießt den Prozess des Malens. 

Jedoch nur wenige Aquarelle schaffen es, wenn einige Zeit vergeht in meine Top Liste zu kommen. Bei diesem hier wird es die Zeit zeigen. Die Granulation des dunklen Grüns im Hintergrund ist auf jeden Fall etwas, das ich richtig gut finde.

Cornflower - Kornblume

 

Seldomly I show two same sketches in my two blogs. This is another flower, of which I did a pencil sketch on one of my JAGST hike & paint tours and finished it in the studio I show it here as well. ...I love the blue colour!

Selten zeige ich dieselben Skizzen in beiden meiner Blogs. Diese Blüte habe ich nochmal aufgegriffen, denn die hatte ich auf meiner JAGST hike & paint tour nur vorgezeichnet und später im Atelier die Aquarellfarbe aufgetragen. ...ich liebe die blaue Farbe!

More wildflowers / Mehr Wildblumen

 

We call that herb/wildflower "Günsel" and below another wildflower which has often white or sometimes dark red blossoms. 

Wir nennen das obere Wildkraut "Günsel". Ach und unten ist noch eine Wildblume. Die gibt es mit weissen und dunkelroten Blütenblättern.

Our new subject for week 18 was: Vases and Pots

Semaine 18 : Des vases, des pots...

During one of my stays on Madeira island, I visited the botanical gardens and remembered that I took a few photos of huge pots there. I started a direct watercolour and was not allowed to finish, as a voice from behind me said stop and don't draw further, the watercolour is good as is.... so I stopped although I was having fun painting and left everything like what you can see above.

The always present question is: When to stop...

Unser Thema für Woche 18 waren: Vasen und Töpfe

Während einem meiner Madeira Aufenthalte, habe ich dort den botanischen Garten besucht und mich daran erinnert, dass ich von den riesigen Töpfen Fotos gemacht habe. Eine super Vorlage, dachte ich und begann ohne Vorzeichnung mit direkten Aquarell-Pinselstrichen loszumalen. Als ich mittendrin war hörte ich hinter mir eine Stimme sagen: STOP! Nicht weitermalen. Lass das Bild genau so....also stoppte ich, obwohl ich gerade Spaß mit der Farbe hatte...weniger ist manchmal vielleicht mehr? Die Frage, wann höre ich auf ist im Aquarell immer present.   

Rapsfeld 4 in 2021

 

What is different in working on white paper or on toned, like I did in this rape field sketch. Here I used a bit of white gouache in the sky and on the stems of the rape flowers. I wanted to know if there is too much of a difference. On toned paper you need several more washes to get to quite intese colours. The result is a bit more vibrant in my opinion. Again a lot of fun with those yellow fields.

Was ist der Unterschied, wenn man ein Rapsfeld auf weissem oder einem braunen Papier malt? Hier habe ich es mal auf dem getönten Papier ausprobiert und nutzte ein wenig weisse Gouache im Himmel und an den Stielen der Rapspflanzen, ausserdem habe ich die Aquarellfarben in mehrfachen Farbaufträgen verwendet, damit die Farben knalliger werden. Das Ergebnis ist irgendwie plakativer und kraftvoller. Hat grossen Spass gemacht.
