Why Zebras?

 

...because...my friend sent me some of her holiday shots lately, of which I liked the one with many many Zebras best. I just painted a small part of her photo on an A3 Canson, 300 g. In the beginning I had some doubts...but did not give up...still have lots of black stripes in my head...;)

...weil...meine Freundin mir einige ihrer Urlaubsfotos geschickt hat, von denen ich das Bild mit den Zebras am Besten fand. I malte nur einen Ausschnitt des Originalfotos auf ein A3 Canson, 300 g Blatt. Am Anfang hatte ich irgendwie Zweifel...aber mit Durchhaltevermögen kommt man doch zum Ziel...habe noch immer schwarze Streifen im Kopf...;)

Lemon Yellow Butterfly II

 

This one was fun to paint. It sat on some flowers in the garden.

Dieser Schmetterling ging superleicht von der Hand. Er saß auf einigen Blumen im Garten.

These lemon yellow butterflys are in my garden. I already saw them very early this year in the forest, too. My watercolour version of it looks quite funny.

Solche Zitronenfalter sehe ich oft in meinem Garten, aber auch schon im zeitigen Frühjahr konnte man sie auch im Wald sehen. Meine Aquarellversion sieht irgendwie lustig, puschelig aus.

A Squirrel / Ein Eichhörnchen

 

On my way through the forest I often see squirrels. Two days ago again I saw one. Time to try a watercolour of this animal. Needed just three colours for this one.

Auf meinem Weg durch den Wald sehe ich oft Eichhörnchen. Vor zwei Tagen hab ich wieder eines über den Weg huschen sehen und wollte endlich mal ein Aquarell davon machen. Mit nur drei Farben ist es richtig gut zu malen.

Dragonfly VI - Libelle

 

Usually you better stop, when it's best. (German saying) Which means that I might have finished this subject with this blue dragonfly.

Bei uns sagt man: Man hört besser auf, wenn es am Besten ist. Das bedeutet, dass ich das Thema Libelle mit diesem blauen Exemplar vorerst beende.

This is my favourite so far colour and shape - wise. 

Diese hier ist bisher mein Favorit, was die Farben und Formen angeht.

Dragonfly IV - Libelle

 

I truly thought that this one is my last dragonfly for a while, but I discovered that there are so much more shapes and colours, that I might continue in the next few days...

Tatsächlich dachte ich das wäre meine letzte Libelle für einige Zeit, aber ich habe noch mehr Farben und Formen entdeckt und werde das Thema noch etwas weiterverfolgen.

Dragonfly III / Libelle

 

Dragonflies are masters of flying and they can do aprupt changes of direction and they can remain in one spot or some of them can also fly backwards according to Wikipedia. They can have a maximum speed of 50 km per hour. I believe this is quite interesting.

Die Libellen sind Meister des Fliegens und zeichnen sich lt Wikipedia durch einen außergewöhnlichen Flugapparat aus. Die Fähigkeit, ihre beiden Flügelpaare auch unabhängig voneinander zu bewegen, ermöglicht es ihnen, abrupte Richtungswechsel zu vollziehen, in der Luft stehen zu bleiben oder bei einigen Arten sogar rückwärts zu fliegen. Beim Flug werden Maximalgeschwindigkeiten von 50 km/h erreicht. Sehr interessant und ich hab schon wieder was gelernt.

Dragonfly II / Libelle

 

Another dragonfly with larger body and brownish colour. Really interesting creatures. I will explore them further as I appreciate the challenge of sketching the wing structure which sparkles somehow like broken glass.

Nochmal eine Libelle mit einem breiteren Körper und bräunlicher Farbe. Sehr interessante Tiere. Ich möchte sie noch etwas weiter erforschen, denn die Herausforderung, die durchsichtigen Flügel, die wie zerbrochenes Glas glänzen irgendwie in Aquarell darzustellen interessiert mich sehr.

Dragonfly / Libelle

 

Lately I am painting a lot of animals. The dragonfly came into my mind while biking, as I often see some of them close to a pond I come by nearly daily. Yet it is not the season, but I helped myself with some photos.

In letzter Zeit male ich viele Tiere. Die Idee mit der Libelle kam mir während des Fahrradfahrens. Da komme ich nämlich immer an einem Weiher vorbei, wo man im Sommer die Libellen sehen kann. Jetzt ist es noch nicht die richtige Zeit, aber ich kann mir ja bis dahin mit Fotos aushelfen.

Das ist ein Schmetterling, dessen Name ich leider nicht kenne. Wenn jemand unter euch weiss wie er heisst, hinterlasst mir in den Kommentaren bitte eine Nachricht. Danke.

The colours of this butterfly are very beautiful. His name is mourning gown.

Dieser Schmetterling ist besonders schön gefärbt. Sein name ist Trauermantel. 

Papillon IV - Tagpfauenauge

 

Exploring butterflys, their shapes and colours, still. Here is a peacock butterfly. I needed some colour today.

Ich befasse mich noch immer mit Schmetterlingen, deren Formen und Farben. Hier ist ein Tagpfauenauge. Heute brauchte ich dringend noch mehr Farbe.

It is good fun to sketch butterflys. So beautiful and full of colour.

Es macht riesig Spaß Schmetterlinge zu malen. So schön und so farbenprächtig.

Papillon II - Schwalbenschwanz

 

Yesterdays sketch was fun and I continued with an even more colourful butterfly.

Gestern hat das Malen des Schmetterlings so Spaß gemacht, dass ich mit einem noch farbenprächtigeren Exemplar (Schwalbenschwanz) weitermachte.

Over the Easter days we had some more snow and everything was white and grey and it was chilly outside. You would not even want your dog to be out. Needed some time to do some relaxed sketching and definitely a bit more colour than what I saw outside.

Über die Ostertage hatten wir nochmal Schnee und draussen war alles weiss und grau und sehr kalt. Man würde nicht mal seinen Hund rausschicken. Auf jeden Fall brauchte ich etwas entspanntes und farbiges zum Malen.

I made some sort of freestyle sketch, having fun playing with dark colours.

Ich machte aus dem Thema eine Art Freistil-Skizze, denn ich hatte Lust mit dunklen Farben zu spielen.

Mood of the day sketch - Geese

 

Tried the new colours already in the first sketch of two geese. Very fast and very fun.

Die neuen Farben musste ich natürlich sofort ausprobieren bei meiner Gänse-Skizze. Das ging schnell und machte Spaß.

Urban Sketchers Hohenlohe - Pferde auf der Weide

 

Drawing horses is not easy, if you do this from life. This is why I set it on my USk Hohenlohe schedule. 

They move all the time and I had to do be very fast sketching their movements. In the beginning they were very close and curious while we sat there to draw, but lateron they moved much more. My first attempt was just different horse shapes in one sketch, but I gave up on that one as I was not fast enough. I did another one where I concentrated on one gesture I observed, that was repeated by all of them. That was easier and I was happy with what I got in this short timespan. 

Conclusion: Animals tend to repeat behaviours or gestures so that you just have to wait for the horse to do the same thing as the other did before. They take sertain poses before they move away again so you just have to be patient and concentrated to get a sketch done. Maybe I should have done some preparation sketches that would have helped me with sketching on site. It is always easier to sketch something you know the rough structure somehow. Learning at least the silhouettes could help for drawing on site.

Pferde zu malen ist nicht einfach, wenn man es direkt vor Ort, bei freilaufenden Tieren macht. Deshalb habe ich die challenge als USk Hohenlohe meeting angesetzt. Eine neue Herausforderung. Am Anfang waren die Tiere neugierig und kamen näher ran. Mit der Zeit tobten sie auf der Weide herum und bewegten sich viel. 

Mein erster Ansatz war einfach verschiedene Pferdekonturen aufs Blatt zu bannen, aber die waren mir einfach zu schnell. Ich gab auf. Meine neue Idee war sich auf eine bestimmte  Bewegung zu konzentrieren und diese dann zu malen, egal welches Pferd sie machte. Also entstand ein Pferd auf meinem Blatt aus vielen verschiedenen Pferden, die die gleiche Bewegung machten. Das kennen wir ja auch schon vom Personen-Malen. Hier ist es wohl auch die richtige Strategie. Das war also einfacher und ich war ganz zufrieden, was ich in so kurzer Zeit gemalt hatte.
