What more to say than: Thanks and see you soon again.
*** Btw wanted to state that I tried out a waterbrush for some of my drawings in Madeira as well as in Prague and could say the following:
PRO: It is more handy at times and can be used anywhere where you have to be quick or could not use a water container (i.e. museum or the like).
CONTRA: It is not as precise as a real brush and I was not able to achieve the darkest darks I wanted to get. In my opinion it could sometimes be a plus to have a waterbrush, but at this state it will never replace a good watercolour brush.
On my last day in Prague I still had time to go to Mucha Museum and have a Hazelnut Cake at Café Imperial. Did some private sketching before leaving. Btw the cake was fantastic and the surrounding stunning. Had to leave which is a bit sad as I liked the creative marathon each day, the people and the surroundings. Have to come back soon. Muss bald mal wieder kommen.
A fantastic cubist café is the Grand Café Orient in Prague. I felt like at home somehow. It was my last sketching opportunity with the USk Prague friends and we had a great time there. The sympathetic Delphine was my subject for the foreground. The friendly waiter by the cash desk in the background moved a lot so I had to interrupt and continue each time he came back. The decoration and the lamps are fantastic for a sketcher. This is my personal favourite sketch so far. The feeling for the place and the surrounding friends made it a very good experience for me...like I was in the flow...
The afternoon sketching was outside on a beautiful square near Stone Bell House. At a temperature of 4 degrees Celsius I sat on the ground, my back to a wall and a bit protected by a dustbin. People watched a lot as I painted this watercolour and a tourist couple asked me for a photograph. They even filmed me, my painting and the real Stone Bell house for comparison. What a fun, my drawing will be on TV in Saudi Arabia or so...;)
Time was nearly over and just before we met again at the meeting point, I did a fast one of a statue with the watersoluble pen.
Another portrait sketch. This time it is of artist Leisan who sat opposite. I sketched and had some good food and nice art talk there. When I did the fast two min. sketch below, I used the watersoluble pen I received from LK Bing during a workshop in Amsterdam. Then I took a dot card with fun colours to give it some colour.
My sketching friend Johanna was the one who informed me in the first place about the event and after having had two days of great sketching with USk Prage, that evening, we met for more private dinner at a nice restaurant in the old part of Prague. I sketched her before the meal came. This one was super fast and super fun. It is a direct watercolour.
Now it is time to post a few of my portrait sketchings. Sketched Helena, Emma and Raj at Café Slavia and Jan Vitek the day before at dinner in Klasterni Senk.
Btw he did two super line (continuous line!) portraits of me and lots of beautiful artwork of 20 consecutive days of sketching could be found on Urbansketchers Prague Facebook Group
We had to get up early as the meeting was a breakfast sketch meet at Café Slavia. Here I could see that USk Prague is a huge group of people. They often meet twice a week in normal times. I have never seen such enthousiastic sketchers (besides on Symposia).
My watercolour sketch shows a view from inside out to Most Legil (Bridge). You can see the right window frame and the red blinds in my drawing. The tram was not easy to draw as it went too fast for me to sketch and the wagons varied from old to modern... more tomorrow...
Time goes so fast and I would like to tell you that I was merely at home from Madeira, the next Urban Sketching event came up.
I travelled to Prague for the #2020PragueSketchFest which meant non-stop sketching for 20 consecutive days. A 20 day marathon for the Prague Group and a long week-end for me. I found warm, welcoming and extremely passionate sketchers there.
The first day we were invited to attend a guided visit at Brevnov Monastery Brewery. We later had three hours to sketch in the brewery building at our leisure. When the tour began the Prague Sketchers followed the guide sketching while standing and I tried it as well. It resulted in just fast more or less unfinished sketches:
I am not used to standing while sketching and walking is even worse... Later I installed myself at a mill where the hob is milled (this is the green machine, although in this drawing the broom is the star somehow;) ...and drew it at about 5 Degrees Celsius as the big doors were open...I thought to myself: Only the hardest survive... So many interesting machines. Some of us went into the cellar and some sketched outside. The Prague Sketchers are quite tough.
Then I came to the copper brewing tanksThe temperature here was nearly as cold as before. We talked a lot at that place as there were other sketchers right beside me. My hands were frozen and after that I had to heat up in a warm room.
In the warm room there were these old metal caraffes - I was not able to do any more complicated drawing. We went to Klasterni Senk together to share our drawings and to have a bite + beer.
Here are some of the drawings done at the brewery. The first day was great fun, let's see what happens on my next day in Prague...
Made another Video of the sketchbook filled with drawings from Karlsbad in order to have a memory of the good times there. All my Karlsbad drawings are combined in a 30 seconds video. Please enjoy and if you like it do not hesitate to give me a like.
Danke.
On our way home I did a sketch just to make it less boring as we went on autobahn and not through the beautiful forest. I used a violet watercolourable pencil and a black normal one.
Our last day has come and we again went through town, visiting the beautiful buildings and drinking the healthy water. The thirst of coffee (after all the healthy stuff...) and the beautiful surroundings of Pupp Café with the friendly waiters and waitresses made our decision easy where to go. From former visits I can say that the coffee is excellent here.
Out the sketchbook and here we go again...at the desk the waiters got their cakes and coffees prepared by persons behind the desk and at that place they stopped for a while - a good drawing subject for limited palette drawing.
If you stroll through the city of Karlsbad in the late evening - there is nearly no one - it is calm and quiet in winter time. We decided to have a drink in a club and listen to live music. My sketchbook always on hand I sketched in the velvety darkness of the club.
Stop at Café Perla. In the city they have a Market. Now we are all tired from the big city tour. It is time to relax with something to eat and drink and chat at Café Perla with its panoramic windows towards the old Lazne V wellness centre. Need to get out my sketchbook and draw the view from my position by the window.
When you go to Karlsbad, for sure you drink or bath in the very healthy water, but what would be a stay there without a health treatment like a massage or the like?
I decided to have a massage. Ready from my treatment I was waiting for my friend Dani who had the next appointment at the massage room. Time to draw. There was a stone figure I already saw when entering the building and I sat beside this bird-like figure and began to draw. The drawing was made with a waterproof creatacolor pen and the rest is a violet watercolour pen and ultramarine watercolour on top.
Here is the whole sketchbook spread of this morning.
In the breakfast room of our hotel there are all nations in peace together. Some still sleep, some look very different from european people and some have funny clothing, like this girl who always came to breakfast with a funny cap. (bad hair day?) Today she had two tufts to each side and before I had my breakfast I had to draw her. Maybe a new trend. It was easy to capture her as she was sitting still and stared at her phone while sipping her morning coffee.
I already tried to capture T's portrait several times and every time I do that I come a bit closer in likeness, I guess. I am quite satisfied with that one. Here is the photo of my portrayed person. Btw. I changed the colour of the sweater.
We found a nice bakery, about 300m from the big bus terminal, which had good coffee, cake and excellent christmas cookies. Everything was delicious and I had to do a fast sketch of the interior with the bakery lady in the red shirt. The bakery was traditionally decorated in green and red. For the drawing I used some watercolour pens and for painting I had my usual watercolour travel box.
As we arrived around midday, the weather was mild and we first walked a bit towards the city centre as our room was not yet ready. No problem, the city is so beautiful and there is much to see and do (...or draw?...my drawing is a bit fast and wonky and the fingers were cold, so I had to hurry).
