Watercolour portrait sketch...a Boticelli Model

"This is a Boticelli-like looking person"... is what I thought as I saw this model for the first time. The floral background was an idea I had when I was in floral painting mood lately. Thank you to Judith for making this painting fun happen.

If you would like to learn how to paint a portrait in watercolour don't miss my next workshop at VHS in Crailsheim:

Next full day portrait workshop is on Saturday 01.06.24, 10 - 16°°.

Sketchbook fun at family fest

Each year we gather at some lovely place for family reunion and each year we are more and more people. Could have sketched for days if I would have made more portrait sketches... real fun.

I made a few more sketches, but I am in a lazy summer mood and will probably post them later. Happy holidays.

Watercolour Portrait Sketch: Blue

Oh my, so much happened in the meantime and I am extremely behind in posting my art. I have sketched and painted a lot, was travelling, was preparing exhibiton stuff, was organizing a Sketchtour and, and, and...my life never gets boring it seems;)

Frida for a day

My sketchfriend Fernanda sent this photo and titled it: Frida for a day

What a lovely one I thought, asked her if I am allowed to sketch it.

Then sketched her in less than an hour. No fiddling, no measuring, just fast sketching. It is not an exact copy, but a certain likeness is definitely there.

More Portrait Sketching: Everybody knows Jim Henson!

I would say everybody knows Jim Henson. Founder of the Muppet Show...thanks to @nobleartofcycling for the wonderful prompt. This one is a 20 minute morning sketch.

You can see the humour he had...

Needed to sketch another prompt as well as nobleartofcycling said, I should do it in "kermitgreen" and here is my sketch:

Jeder kennt Jim Henson, den Erfinder der Muppet-Show. Zuerst machte ich eine meiner üblichen Morgenskizzen (hier Vorlage von @nobleartofcycling), brauchte aber diesmal 20 Minuten dafür. Weil es so viel Spass gemacht hat und weil mir @nobleartofcycling vorgeschlagen hat das ganze in Kermitgrün zu malen, konnte ich kaum widerstehen.

Watercolour Portrait Sketch - Jen again!!!

Seldomly sketch a motif twice, but I was not totally satisfied with the colour values in my first try (see the post from a few days ago) so I did it again. In order you can see the difference I sketched the headband in green, while last time I did it in red. I am more happy with this version as also the mouth looks more like it is in the original photo.

This is how I began:

And this is what it looks like after several layers of skin colours:

Great exercise.

Watercolour Portrait Sketch - Sue

This lady again is a great subject to be drawn and painted in watercolours. The skin mixtures are well planned in advance. In my class I will teach how to draw a face easily and how to mix skin tones from light to dark and which colours are used as shade colours.

Watercolour Portrait Sketch - Adam

This time I worked with loads of water for getting the curly look of the hair of this guy. Great fun, splashing around...

Here is the photo reference I got from Mr. Earth:

15 - 20 min. Speed Portraits

What a granulation (!) in this first fast portrait, that I did in 15 min. with a flat 80mm brush and some remaining dark colour from the mixing space in my colour palette.  It helps staying loose and using a lot of water. The portrait below was done in the same way with a brown watercolour. Both are direct watercolours without preliminary pencil drawing.

Watercolour Portrait Sketch

Sketching Portraits is like modelling the face out of the colour...really entertaining. I love the process of first analyzing the person, deciding about the colours to use, get aware of light and shadow parts and finally paint...

Watercolour Portrait Sketch

This one was not so easy to sketch, as I wanted to have her eyes open and visible, unlike on the original photograph, so I had to adapt my sketch...and I did not like the hair across the face in the original photograph and left that.

In the upper photo (of photographer Mr. Earth: thanks btw) you can see the original to the left and my start to the right.

Watercolour Portrait Sketch

Hey, let's start the month of August with one of my favourite portrait sketches these days. I was having so much fun with this guy and the shadows and wrinkles and the beard...and of course the hot chilis...

Thank you to Mr. Earth for letting me have the wonderful photo reference.

Watercolour Portrait sketch

This is a portrait I did a longer time ago of a sketcher I met in Portugal. Her skin is very soft so I actually used a green colour to get the shadow areas right.
