Watercolour Portrait Sketches

I still had half a sheet left so I painted another guy right next to the lady. A process reel of both paintings can be seen down in my insta feed, if you are interested in seeing how I painted them. Both were done wet-in-wet in one go.

If you would like to learn this technique, check into my classes this November and December (see side bar).

Watercolour portrait sketch...a Boticelli Model

"This is a Boticelli-like looking person"... is what I thought as I saw this model for the first time. The floral background was an idea I had when I was in floral painting mood lately. Thank you to Judith for making this painting fun happen.

If you would like to learn how to paint a portrait in watercolour don't miss my next workshop at VHS in Crailsheim:

Watercolour Portrait Sketch

Sunday morning portrait painting. I made a hyperlapse process video of it which can be seen on Insta @bettina_draws. That was a fabulous start to my day.

I worked very loose and did not stick too much to accuracy. This procedure turned out to be a good way for me to make short sketches wet-in-wet.

A colourful start to the day. The Model is Soane Ara and the reference is from my friend Judith and her portraitchallenge.

Watercolour Portrait Sketch

Here comes another sketch on toned paper. I liked the hat which suits him well and of course the intense look.

Still three papers on the block so I got some more on the 200 gms toned paper till it is gone. Needs a lot of colour layers to get at least a bit of contrast, but it is quite nice to try.

Happy sketching, everybody.

Before I went away travelling this January, I did many watercolour portrait sketches on toned paper. Pure fun.

More portrait sketching on toned paper

Really enjoy this brownish paper in the meantime. Very suitable for fast watercolour sketching. This person looks very much alike the prompt of jyportraitchallenge and I am superhappy with it.

More of these... just for the fun of it.

Happy painting.

Portrait Sketching on toned paper

Back to portrait sketching. Still had an A4 block of toned paper, 200 gms which I initially bought for Urban Sketching, but wanted to use it up now as I would like to concentrate on larger formats.

I really liked to sketch with that paper, although it warps a little as it is thinner than my usual paper and it needs more layers to take enough colour.

The models I am painting are from my friend at jyportraitchallenge. Thanks to Judith.

watercolour portrait sketch of Cesare

Don't know why I did not finish the sketch of Cesare, a designer and gallery owner from Calabria...maybe later...this one reminds me of the fun, the good weather and the sea.

Thank you to the kind Cesare for allowing me to paint his photo. Btw I sketched him already on an earlier visit...

I am still behind in posting all the artworks I have made due to my quite busy lifestyle;)

Frida for a day

My sketchfriend Fernanda sent this photo and titled it: Frida for a day

What a lovely one I thought, asked her if I am allowed to sketch it.

Then sketched her in less than an hour. No fiddling, no measuring, just fast sketching. It is not an exact copy, but a certain likeness is definitely there.

Watercolour Portrait Sketch - Jen again!!!

Seldomly sketch a motif twice, but I was not totally satisfied with the colour values in my first try (see the post from a few days ago) so I did it again. In order you can see the difference I sketched the headband in green, while last time I did it in red. I am more happy with this version as also the mouth looks more like it is in the original photo.

This is how I began:

And this is what it looks like after several layers of skin colours:

Great exercise.

Watercolour Portrait Sketch - Sue

This lady again is a great subject to be drawn and painted in watercolours. The skin mixtures are well planned in advance. In my class I will teach how to draw a face easily and how to mix skin tones from light to dark and which colours are used as shade colours.

Watercolour Portrait Sketch

Sketching Portraits is like modelling the face out of the colour...really entertaining. I love the process of first analyzing the person, deciding about the colours to use, get aware of light and shadow parts and finally paint...

Watercolour Portrait Sketch

This one was not so easy to sketch, as I wanted to have her eyes open and visible, unlike on the original photograph, so I had to adapt my sketch...and I did not like the hair across the face in the original photograph and left that.

In the upper photo (of photographer Mr. Earth: thanks btw) you can see the original to the left and my start to the right.
