Everywhere I go, I collect stones and shells, because they are so beautiful. 

I could not resist to explain colour mixing and layering by a demo sketch on stones to my students. Every time I do that, I am thrilled by the colour intensity and explained to them how to get there. Great fun.

Mood of the day sketch - cold sun

 

I painted this sketch mid april and the weather was really cold, but it was sunny. This is a place which is close to Rossfeld and the railroad track is to the right behind the greenery.

Diese Sizze habe ich mitte April gemalt, als das Wetter echt noch kalt war, aber die Sonne hat hervorgelugt. Dieser Platz befindet sich bei Roßfeld, die Bahntrasse zur Rechten, direkt hinter dem Gebüsch.

Auf einer Radtour nach Creglingen zur Herrgottskirche (Riemenschneider-Altar), hielten wir an und ich konnte die 5 Grabsteine, die in einer Reihe direkt vor der Kirche standen schnell in meinem Skizzenbuch festhalten. Und schon ging es weiter...

Mucha Doodle

When I was in Prague in February I visited the Mucha Museum and bought a few postcards. Yesterday evening I doodled a bit around checking Muchas colour palette. He got a lot of earthy tones in his paintings, although I used a few greyish mixtures as well the majority of colours are brownish-red-orange. The only true unmixed colour is in the round middle right behind the face which is a lemon yellow. 

Als ich im Februar in Prag war, besuchte ich das Mucha Museum und kaufte ein paar Postkarten. Gestern Abend kritzelte ich ein wenig rum und sah mir Muchas Farb-Range etwas genauer an. Die meißten Farben sind tatsächlich Erdtöne. Ich hab auch ein paar graue Mischungen verwendet, aber die Mehrzahl der Farben sind im Bereich Braun, Rot und Orange. Die einzige nicht gemischte Farbe ist das Zitronengelb im Kreis hinter dem Kopf der Figur.

Snowdrops in the city park of Schwabach. There are like carpets of them. How beautiful. This is an example of negative painting in a fast watercolour sketch.

Schneeglöckchen im Stadtpark Schwabach. Es gibt dort richtige weisse Blumenteppiche. Sehr schön. Das ist ein gutes Beispiel für eine negativ gemalten Aquarellskizze.

Sicily Sketchbook - Trapani - Palazzo Cavarnetta

Every morning the delicious smell of freshly brewed coffee and sweet Sicilian bakery products together with a breathtaking view from the terrace down to the harbour is doing me so good before I start new adventures. 

Today we aim to drive to Trapani which is a city (the seventh largest in Sicily) as well as the capital of the province Trapani. It is a relaxed drive over the highway. The historical centre is not too big. We walk through it and have a look at the large harbour. As we come back into the centre I draw the Palazzo Cavarnetta, a building with an eagle in the middle and two clocks on top. The left one shows the date and the right one shows the time.

Jeden Morgen riecht es ganz wunderbar nach frischem Kaffee und den süßen Leckereien, aus dem das sizilianische Frühstück besteht. Zusammen mit dem atemberaubend schönen Blick von der Frühstücksterasse aus auf den Hafen, macht das bereits gute Laune für den Tag. 

Heute soll es nach Trapani gehen (das ist die siebtgrößte Stadt in Sizilien). Trapani ist auch die Hauptstadt der gleichnamigen Provinz. Die Fahrt führt entspannt über die Autobahn. Dort angekommen merkt man sofort, dass der historische Stadtkern gar nicht so groß ist. Man kommt an schönen Brunnen, Kirchen, Kolonnaden vorbei und sieht wie die Menschen entspannt durch die Stadt schlendern. Am großen Hafen dagegen ist etwas mehr los. Wir biegen nach einiger Zeit wieder in die Altstadt ein und ich male den Palazzo Cavarnetta, ein Gebäude auf dem in der Mitte ein Adler tront, zu dessen Seiten jeweils eine Uhr zu sehen ist. Die linke Uhr zeigt den Tag an und die rechte Uhr die Uhrzeit.

Sicily Sketchbook - My Flipflops

Continued my yesterdays small sketches for a nice sketchbook spread. 

As I am in Italy I had the best ice cream you can imagine. I had to eat before it melted away and drew, what was left which were the tiny plastic spoons.

Die gestrige Idee mit den kleinen Skizzen vom Strandleben habe ich heute weiterverfolgt und meine Flipflops sowie die Löffel vom Eisessen mit eingebaut. Das Eis konnte ich nicht malen, denn das wäre geschmolzen.

Sicily Sketchbook - Beach Fun

In Sicily, every day is like a summer day and I feel more relaxed than all the months before. The holiday feeling is here and it is good that the day is not really a planned day, but everything comes as it comes. Today I made a spread of smaller things I see beside the beach.

In Sizilien fühlt sich jeder Tag an wie ein echter Sommertag, denn es ist angenehm warm. Ich komme langsam in den Urlaubsmodus und mache heute nur ein paar kleine Skizzen am Strand. Nichts muss, alles kann....ich male ein Kind, das am Wasser steht, ein paar Steine und eine Art Tannenzapfen, der rumliegt. Die linke Seite meines Skizzenbuches ist gefüllt, das reicht dann auch, denn ich bin schließlich im Urlaub...

Sicily Sketchbook - Cala Mazzo di Sciacca + Extraterrestrial

We spent another day at the same beautiful beach. There was nobody around and suddenly we had an extraterrestrial encounter with a person coming out of the water fully loaded with fish and octopusses around his waist. He looked like an alien coming out of the seawater.

...this all happened while I was drawing the little way down to the ocean.

Wir verbrachten noch einen Tag an diesem schönen Strand. Es war kaum jemand unterwegs und alles war ruhig. Doch dann hatten eine aussergewöhnliche Begegnung mit einem Mann, der aus dem Wasser kam. Wir hatten ihn erst gesehen, als er aufgetaucht war. Er hatte die gefangenen Fische und Tintenfische an seinem Gürtel aufgereiht und sah aus, wie ein Alien, der aus der Tiefe kam. 

...das alles passierte, während ich das obere Bild malte, das den Weg zum Meer zeigt.

Sicily Sketchbook - Cala Mazzo di Sciacca

First we did not find this beach, but our nice host lead us here...

and to a bakery in Scopello to buy the freshly baked local bread. Very tasty.

Zuerst haben wir den Strand Cala Mazzo di Sciacca nicht gefunden, aber nachdem wir es unserem Host erzählt haben, hat er uns die Zufahrt sowie eine spezielle Bäckerei in Scopello gezeigt. Hier gibt es das Pane Cunzatu und verschiedene andere Brote und Pizzen. Sehr lecker.

Sicily Sketchbook - Over the Rooftops

We are over the rooftops of Castellammare. Our hotel is so nice and calm and the best of it is that we can have breakfast on the rooftop overlooking Castellammare and the harbour. In my sketch I just made some very indistinct dabs of blue colour to show the tiny boats down in the harbour.
Gotta go as we have lots of things to eat and our host is probably making the test on how much a tourist can eat for breakfast...it is great!

 








Wir sind über den Dächern von Castellammare. Unser Hotel ist so schön und ruhig und das Beste ist, dass wir auf dem Dach frühstücken können mit einem tollen Blick über Castellammare und den Hafen. In meiner Skizze habe ich für die kleinen, weit entfernten Boote im Hafen nur blaue Flecken angedeutet.
Muss jetzt aber...wir haben schließlich noch Unmengen zu essen und ich vermute unser Host macht einen Test, wieviel ein Tourist zum Frühstück essen kann...es ist toll!

Sicily Sketchbook - Tonnara di Scopello 2

In front of the building besides the tree was where I sat to draw yesterdays red house. Now I changed position and draw the other buildings. Here is the full spread (not yet finished). From my place I see a Lady drawing as well and I chat with her for a while and we change adresses. She is an Italian architect coming from Tuscany and working in tourism. She says she needs the holiday now after the busy summer season and what place is better than Sicily to relax and recharge batteries.

Vor diesem Gebäude, neben dem Baum saß ich beim letzten Bild und jetzt habe ich meine Position verändert und male die restlichen Gebäude der Tonnara. Hier die Doppelseite (noch nicht ganz fertig).

Von hier aus sehe ich, dass noch eine andere Dame hier zeichnet. Ich spreche sie an, verstehen uns sofort und tauschen Adressen aus. Sie ist eine italienische Architektin, die aus der Toscana kommt und dort auch im Tourismus arbeitet. Sie sagt, sie hätte jetzt nach der Hochsaison auch mal Urlaub verdient und welcher Ort könnte besser sein, als Sizilien, um wieder die eigenen Batterien aufzuladen.

Sicily Sketchbook - Tonnara di Scopello 1

We are at the ancient tonnaria close to Scopello. It is quite hot as we arrive and I search for shadow. Nowadays you can enter here for 7 Euros per person + 5 Euros for parking if you want to have the ultimate beach or bathing experience in the shallow waters of the area. The site is beautiful and for painters like me it is worth to come here as well as for swimmers or for snorkelling. I sat in a beach chair and painted the area. The water is turquoise and the red building nearly is as red as I drew it. Here is the full spread (click to enlarge):

Wir sind in der alten Thunfischfabrik von Scopello. Es ist ein heisser Tag und ich suche mir einen Schattenplatz. Heutzutage kann man in die stillgelegte Anlage als Tourist für 7 Euros + 5 Euros fürs Parken, wenn man sich die Umgebung ansehen möchte und die Bucht ist zum Baden hervorragend geeignet. Auch für Maler gibt es hier verschiedene Motive und Schwimmer und Schnorchler kommen auch auf ihre Kosten. Ich habe es mir in einem Strandstuhl gemütlich gemacht und das rote Haus und die Umgebung in meinem Blickfeld gemalt. Das Wasser ist türkis und das rote Gebäude ist tatsächlich fast so rot, wie ich es gemalt habe. Oben ist die Doppelseite (einfach anklicken, wenn man es grösser sehen möchte.)

Sicily Sketchbook - After the thunderstorm

Tonight we had a thunderstorm in the area of Santa Flavia and as we went out this morning the sky was still cloudy, but it was warm and the weather is getting back to normal. I sat down on a big stone by the beach and began to sketch the still heavy clouds in the sky and the small fisherboats at S. Elia Bay.

In the late afternoon I did a very very fast sketch of the area from above when the weather was fine again:

Heute Nacht hatten wir ein starkes Gewitter in der Gegend von Santa Flavia und als wir morgens aus dem Haus gingen, war der Himmel noch immer wolkig, aber es war warm und das Wetter ist nun fast wieder normal. Ich setzte mich auf einen grossen Stein am Strand und begann die noch schweren Wolken und die kleinen Fischerboote in der S. Elia Bucht zu malen. Am späten Nachmittag habe ich noch eine schnelle Skizze bei besserem Wetter gemacht.

Sicily Sketchbook - Orto Botanico, Palermo (Part two)

As it began to rain a bit we went into the glass house and I did the view from inside out. This was a very fast sketch which I did not quite finish, but you get the impression. Indeed we had a lot of fun and the garden closed at 18:00 and we were still having art talks and discussed about our sketches. No hurry at all and the group photo had to be done as well.

The world is getting "smaller" and we all made new friends. Thank you so much Maria Francesca Starrabba, Anna Maria Puleo, Celeste Gurgone, Rami Calò and Anna. We had a great time and did not want it to end...

I am sure we will meet again.

Als es zu regnen begann, flohen wir ins Gewächshaus und ich machte eine schnelle Skizze von innen durch die offene Gewächshaustür. Die Skizze wurde nie fertig, aber wir hatten ja noch so viel zu besprechen. Der Botanische Garten schließt um 18:00 Uhr...wir waren noch immer hier und es war weit nach der Zeit. Alles easy hier. Das Gruppenfoto musste schließlich auch noch gemacht werden...

Die Welt wächst zusammen und wir haben neue Freunde dazugewonnen. Vielen Dank an Maria Francesca Starrabba, Anna Maria Puleo, Celeste Gurgone, Rami Calò und Anna. Wir hatten eine schöne Zeit, die viel zu schnell vorbei ging. Wir treffen uns sicher wieder...

 

Sicily Sketchbook - Orto Botanico, Palermo (Part one)

Palermo. The city is in working mode. For others it is a usual day, but for me it is special as I am about to meet some people of USk Palermo. We meet at the botanical garden of Palermo.

As I arrive, I already see a few people with little seats which is quite a sign for USkers.

Then Maria Francesca comes around the corner. She smiles and I instantly recognized her. She is a painter (architect, book illustrator, passionate sketcher and watercolourist) living in Palermo and she organised the meeting. We know each other from social media as well as we saw each other in Amsterdam and Porto at the two USk Symposiums.

It was a very good encounter and it seemed we knew each other forever. Here is the link to Maria Francescas Website.

 





We all meet in the entrance building and greet and chat. The leader of the institute gave us a welcome speech, but is too busy to draw with us as there is so much work for tomorrows plant exhibition in the botanical garden.

Soon we make our way to the alley of the beautiful "bottle trees". Maria Francesca, as an insider, explains the plants and the surroundings and we all search our spot for drawing. I chose a few bottle trees with a glass house in the background (see above - click to enlarge).

Palermo. Die Stadt ist im Arbeitsmodus. Für Andere ist es ein ganz normaler Tag, für mich ist es ein ganz Besonderer, denn ich treffe mich nach meiner Stadttour mit den Urban Sketchers Palermo im Orto Botanico.  

Als ich dort ankomme sehe ich bereits einige Personen mit kleinen Hockern am Eingang, was deutlich auf USker hinweist. 

Maria Francesca

Dann kommt Maria Francesca Starrabba, der ich dieses Treffen verdanke. Sie kommt lachend auf mich zu. Ich habe sie sofort erkannt, obwohl wir uns nur aus den sozialen Medien und vom Sehen aus Amsterdam und Porto kennen. Es ist eine herzliche Begrüßung und es kommt mir vor, als würden wir uns schon seit Jahren kennen. Hier der Link zu Maria Francescas Webseite.


Wir versammeln uns im Eingangsbereich und stellen uns gegenseitig vor. Dann geht es auch schon los und wir werden vom Institutsleiter empfangen und bekommen Tipps, wo es zum Malen gut wäre. Maria Francesca, erklärt uns verschiedene Bäume und wir stoppen bei den "Bottle Trees" und suchen uns einen Platz zum Malen.

Sicily Sketchbook - Palermo, Antica Focacceria

Visiting is making me hungry. I search for something typical Sicilian. I found a focacceria which is very stylish and already existed in the older days in a similar way as the old black and white photos on the walls show. There are a few tourists here, but the locals also come so this is a good choice for me. I eat the focaccia, which is a must and the arancine filled with rice and meat or ricotta. Very delicious. After the meal I drew the man behind the counter with the rice balls to the left and the focaccia to the right.


Der Besuch in Palermo macht mich hungrig. Ich suche nach etwas typisch sizilianischem. Gefunden habe ich eine Focacceria, die jetzt sehr stylisch wirkt, aber bereits schon sehr lange existiert und früher tatsächlich sehr ähnlich aussah, was die schwarz-weiss Fotos an den Wänden beweisen. Es gibt im Lokal ab und zu ein paar Touristen, aber auch die Einheimischen essen hier, was ich immer gut finde. Ich esse natürlich eine Focaccia und probiere die Reisbällchen mit Ricotta oder Fleischfüllung. Sehr gut. Nach dem Mahl musste ich natürlich den Herren hinter der Theke malen zusammen mit den Bällchen links und der Focaccia auf der rechten Seite.

Sicily Sketchbook - From Santa Flavia to Palermo

The station in Santa Flavia got a ticket machine. It seems to be so slow  - or is this me in holiday mode? I managed to get a ticket right as the train came into the station and then a sprint into the door. I made it in the last second. Now heading to Palermo Centrale. The station is very beautiful. 

As I enter the city I first head towards the sea, coming by the botanical garden. Later I search for a café. I find Café Luca with lots of sicilian dolci and a good caffè. It is an area with not many traffic. A few "tuctucs" are parked here. I draw the view in front of me. 

Then I start my city tour and have a look at all those buildings, churches and Quattro Canti as well as the big fountain. 

Der Bahnhof von Santa Flavia hat eine Ticketmaschine. Leider ist die so unglaublich langsam - oder bin ich das (Ferienmodus)? - auf jeden Fall fuhr der Zug ein und ich konnte im letzten Moment mein Ticket lösen und rannte auf die offene Tür des Waggons zu. Puh, geschafft. Jetzt kann es ab nach Palermo gehen. Die Fahrt dauert eine halbe Stunde mit ca. 5 Stopps. Dort angekommen sehe ich das schöne Bahnhofsgebäude. Ein Kopfbahnhof (...das erinnert mich an was...)

Zuerst nehme ich den Weg Richtung Meer am Botanischen Garten vorbei und später suche ich mir ein Café. Im Café Luca gibt es so ziemlich alle Spezialitäten und natürlich den guten Caffè. Ich male den Blick, der sich mir bietet. Es ist ein Platz, an dem nur wenige Autos und ein paar "Tuktuks" fahren.

Gestärkt gehe ich auf Stadttour und sehe mir die Gebäude, Kirchen und natürlich Quattro Canti, den grossen Brunnen und alles, was meinen Weg kreuzt an.

Sicily Sketchbook - Santa Flavia beach

After a calm day by the beach and studying all the surroundings and the neighborhood I sat down in the bight of Santa Flavia to sketch a little house and the boats. There is a nice beach bar and sure I had a very tasty Italian coffee!
A few metres away there was sitting a guy, sketching as well. I went to talk to him and it turned out he was sketching the same view as I did. Another nice encounter.

Nach einem ruhigen Tag am Strand und nachdem ich mir die Umgebung genau angesehen hatte setzte ich mich in die Bucht von Santa Flavia, um eine Skizze des kleinen Hauses und der Boote zu machen. 

In der Bucht gibt es eine kleine Beachbar und natürlich bestellte ich mir einen guten italienischen Caffè. Einige Meter von mir weg saß ein Herr, der auch skizzierte. Ich sprach ihn an und es stellte sich heraus, dass er dasselbe Motiv wie ich gemalt hatte. Schöner Zufall.
