That week I was the co-host of our Landscape Art Group and sent in some photos of the wonderful magnolia tree we can admire every year at this time. I visit the place quite often and the best way to enjoy the beauty is to get an ice cream in the closeby icecream parlour and walk to the tree which is opposite within the fortified walls of the city and sit on a bench to admire this awesome tree.
What a great Saturday to plan the three Sketchwalks for Sketchtour.
We walked and noted our ideas and refined our plans. It felt like hours of walking through the city of Schwäbisch Hall...
Then we had lunch at Löwen, which will probably be one of the drink&draw places we will chose. There we discussed our plans and decided to sketch in the afternoon at sympathetic HFM, which will be our hub for sketchtour.
A staff member gave us a tour through some of the rooms and I decided to sketch the Sieder garments, while Katharina sketched the small figures of the Sieders. (see photo)
We had a great time and a perfect Saturday.
Eine tolle Idee von Jutta mal zur Burgruine Limpurg hochzuwandern. Das Wetter passte und wir marschierten los. Jutta führte uns den schmalen, romantischen Weg oberhalb des Kochers entlang, von dem aus man einen grandiosen Ausblick auf die Comburg hatte. Oben angekommen suchten wir uns einen Platz zum Malen. Ich fand die Reste der Abendsonne spannend, die auf die alten Gemäuer traf und diese teilweise orange schimmern ließen. Nach einer Stunde traten wir bereits den Rückzug an, denn es wurde sehr schnell dunkel. Toll war's, danke Jutta!

An drei aufeinander folgenden Mittwochen malen wir abends HOHENLOHER LANDSCHAFTEN in Aquarell zusammen. Für Anfänger und Fortgeschrittene.

Kursinhalt:
Beispiele und Übungen zur Mischung und Kontrolle der Wasser und Farbmenge. Erklärung des Bildaufbaus und der Strukturierung einer Landschaft in Vorder-, Mittel- und Hintergrund. Wahl der Farbtöne bei Winterlandschaften bzw. Mischungen von lebhaften Farbtönen bei Frühjahrs-, Sommer- und Herbst-Landschaften.
Danach erfolgt das Zeichnen einer Landschaft nach Farbvorlage in A4 oder gerne grösser.
Wie fange ich damit an. Tipps zur Strukturierung und Darstellung.
Wir zeichnen mit Bleistift oder Buntstift vor und beginnen dann in Einzelschritten den Aquarell-Farbauftrag. Das Aquarellieren in verschiedenen Schritten wird gezeigt und erklärt.
Wir lernen
• interessante Landschaften aus Hohenlohe zu zeichnen und aquarellieren.
• Licht und Schatten zu bestimmen und Mischungen dafür erstellen
• Bäume, Sträucher und Wälder zu malen.
• Farben und Texturen sowie Hell-/Dunkel Kontraste richtig einzusetzen
Wir bringen mit:
- Aquarellpapier A4 (oder grösser) mindestens 300g
- Aquarellskizzenbuch für Farbproben und Notizen
- Aquarellfarben
- Aquarellpinsel 12er oder grösser mit guter Spitze
- Bleistift und/oder Buntstifte, Radiergummi, Spitzer
- Wasserbehälter, Lappen, Fön (bei Bedarf)
The bubbling water by the weir in Eichenau and the old stone bridge were my great sketching fun, right before I went to the International USk Festival in Swidnica. I forgot to post it and here it is...
In my garden and my forest grow lots of those lovely small violets in April. Finished this A3 size watercolour around Easter. Could not post earlier because of Sketchtour preparation.
In meinem Garten und im Wald gibt es im April zahlreiche dieser kleinen Veilchen. Das Aquarell in A3 habe ich an Ostern fertiggemalt. Ich konnte das Bild aus Zeitgründen nicht eher posten.

While the group was doing the panorama sketch, I sketched some houses a few metres down the road, as I already sketched the panorama of Kirchberg twice.

A few days ago we had this international USk meeting called SKETCHTOUR KIRCHBERG at Kirchberg castle.
Plein-air painters from 8 different countries (2 continents) joined in to paint landscape, city, portrait etc. The techniques were very diverse from inksketching, watercolouring, crayons to acrylic or marker paintings. We did Panoramasketching and Nightsketching as well and my sketchbuddy Katharina (@rinibommel) and I organized a sketchwalk from Mistlau to Kirchberg with different stops for landscape, river and floral paintings.
Lots of my old friends came there and also a small number of newbies.
We sketched three days in the stunning surrounding of Kirchberg and had such a good time.
Thank you to all Sketcher-friends for the good vibes, arttalks and new ideas you brought us.

SKETCHTOUR KIRCHBERG
Plein-air Maler aus 8 verschiedenen Ländern (und 2 Kontinenten), folgten meiner Einladung und
trafen sich zum Austausch, fürs Stadt-, Landschafts- und
Portraitmalen und natürlich auch um Skizzen der Hohenlohe Umgebung
anzufertigen. Wir lebten im Schloss Kirchberg. Absolut empfehlenswert!
Die Maltechniken reichten von Tuschemalerei über Aquarelltechnik
hin zu Acryl- oder Kreidematerialien.
Auf dem Programm stand ausser Portrait-, Panorama- und Stadtmalerei auch ein Sketchwalk von Mistlau nach Kirchberg, (geführt von Katharina) mit verschiedenen Stops zur Landschaftsmalerei sowie verschiedene Nightsketch-Aktivitäten in der Kirchberger Altstadt.

Although I organized, I managed to squeeze in some watercolour sketches.
What a fun and honour to sketch with so many fantastic international artists.
The way through the forest is enchanting and I knew that we would have a great
time sketching at Kaiserlinde in Burgbergwald...the linden leafs first and later the whole tree...as we were sketching we heard the fairy say: "...ah here you are, I got you some nice fresh pretzels..." and he went away by bike as fast as he came.
What a magical forest to sketch in, Paula and I said and so we sketched and eat the wonderful pretzels.

Paula came by plane and the day after her arrival we went to SHA for sketching, visiting Kunsthalle Würth and for dining out. Here is one of my sketches of that day. The ducks were superfriendly and came very close to the place we were sitting and sketching.
Einen Tag nachdem Paula mit dem Flieger ankam waren wir in SHA zum sketchen. Hier ist eine meiner direkten Skizzen. Die Enten waren super zutraulich an diesem Platz, von dem aus man den Sulferturm so gut sehen kann.
Late afternoon walk close to my home. The sun is about to set and the surrounding is shrouded in yellowish light. The shadows are getting longer and it feels cold, calm and beautiful. One of the trees has got a yellow ribbon, which hereabouts is a sign by the owner, that everybody can harvest the fruit. This is a wonderful sign of sharing. Happy Holidays.
Ein Spaziergang am späten Nachmittag, in der Nähe meines Hauses. Die Sonne steht schon sehr tief und die Umgebung ist in gelbliches Licht gehüllt. Die Schatten werden länger und es fühlt sich kalt, ruhig und schön an hier zu sein. Einer der Bäume trägt ein gelbes Band, das hier dafür steht, dass der Eigentümer die Früchte des Baumes nicht benötigt und Jeder ernten kann, der vorbeikommt. Das ist eine großzügige Geste des Teilens. Schöne Winterzeit.

My upper watercolour shows the beautiful gate of an old cemetery (Ehrenfriedhof) close to Volksfestplatz in the middle of Crailsheim. I like the large trees there and the little chapel inside is worth a visit.
Ich wünsche euch allen ein friedvolles, entspanntes Weihnachtsfest und vielleicht findet ihr ja auch etwas Zeit zum Malen.
Mein oberes Bild zeigt das schöne Tor am alten Ehrenfriedhof in der Mitte von Crailsheim. Ich mag die grossen, alten Bäume dort und es gibt eine kleine, sehenswerte Kapelle.

The only one to show up on this USk meeting was me, as my sketchfriends called me, that they regret not being able to come this time. As I entered Johannes Church, I felt the calm inside, although the heating and the lights were off. Just a few candles at the altar made for a warm shine.
First I went up to the Empore, where the large organ is and sketched from there, not being able to see my colours properly - it was quite dark.
In the photo you can see, how dark it was. What a surprise to see the bright colours of my sketches later in real light.
The decoration of each pillar was different. I went down the stairs and drew a fast sketch of the rear part of the church.
No noise - total calm ... I was the only person. Lots of good memories in my mind. I thought of the many Christmas Masses, I spent here in my childhood. I remember lots of real candle lights and the huge, beautiful Christmas Tree they always had with the handmade straw stars. I imagine Choirs singing here and I felt that this is a good place...also for sketching...
The lion figure you see above is in the front of the church. My last sketch below is another ornament on one of the columns.
The colouring of some of my sketches was made at home, as I could not do all in this short amount of time. I will go back there soon again. I was having what we sketchers call a "flow" in this relaxed surrounding,... totally on my own, doing what I like best.
Spent a cold late afternoon in my forest in order to paint a fast A3 watercolour "Contre-Jour" of one of my favourite places in Burgberg forest. It is already getting dark quite early and most of the trees lost their leaves. A bit of preparation is needed, before the sun begins to set. In the end I just had to paint the dark values and the shadows. This is painting fun in the month of November.
Ein kalter Nachmittag in meinem Burgbergwald: Ich wollte ein schnelles A3 Landschaftsmotiv malen und da bald die Sonne unter gehen sollte, bereitete ich alles vor. Die Fläche, an der die Sonne steht, hatte ich fast frei gelassen. Schatten und dunkle Töne zuletzt aufgetragen. Ich musste sowieso schnell sein, denn es war schon sehr kalt. Das ist Mal-Spaß im November
Today I would like to show you how I painted my autumn forest at the time of sunset. It is already real cold and the leaves are falling down. Some evergreens like the trees to the left side make for a nice greenish contrast to the orange and red tones in the background.
This is how I started. The pencil lines are done with coloured pencils to get a better overview which branches go to which tree. This makes it a lot easier as you watercolour.
I always try to work from left to right and background before I start my foreground. After this step the fun of jumping into really dark darks is approaching.

The parking garage of a hotel in Langenburg looks somewhat different of how garages usually look like here. It is a large half timbered barn, that looks very sympathetic and rustic to a painters eye.
Die Parkgarage eines Hotels in Langenburg schaut tatsächlich etwas anders aus, als normale Garagen. Es ist eine grosse Fachwerkscheune und eine Augenweide für das Künstlerauge.
I painted this sketch mid april and the weather was really cold, but it was sunny. This is a place which is close to Rossfeld and the railroad track is to the right behind the greenery.
Diese Sizze habe ich mitte April gemalt, als das Wetter echt noch kalt war, aber die Sonne hat hervorgelugt. Dieser Platz befindet sich bei Roßfeld, die Bahntrasse zur Rechten, direkt hinter dem Gebüsch.

A new story on JAGST hike & paint project
A place where I already painted several times close to Burgberg. I did this little hut also in oils years ago.
Ein Platz, an dem ich schon öfters gemalt habe. Die kleine Hütte habe ich vor Jahren auch in Öl gemalt.
