Sketchbook Madeira - Bathing Platform

It is late afternoon and there are no people on the bathing platform. The ocean got 20 °C which is quite warm for the Atlantic at this time of year. I climbed up to one of the smaller platforms on the rocks and did my drawing. The perspective is a bit weird. For the stones I used the remaining watercolour on my mixing palette - its the last page in my sketchbook - I am happy that I packed some more sheets of watercolour paper in  my bag - just in case. What a luck. Time for a drink now.

Es ist später Nachmittag und es sind keine Menschen auf der Badeplattform. Das Meer hat 20 °C, was ziemlich warm ist für den Atlantik, vor allem für diese Zeit des Jahres. Ich kletterte auf eine erhöhte Plattform um alles überblicken zu können und begann zu malen. Die Perspektive ist etwas seltsam. Für die Steine habe ich die restliche Farbe auf meiner Mischpalette verwendet. Kehraus sozusagen, denn das ist meine letzte Seite in diesem Skizzenbuch, aber zum Glück habe ich ja noch Papier dabei, damit ich weitermalen kann. Jetzt ist es aber erstmal Zeit was trinken zu gehen.

Sketchbook Madeira - Canical

The weather was windy and rainy early in the morning in Canical. We fled from the wet into Restaurant/Bar Amarelo to have a coffee and maybe to paint the boats in the docks across the street. It was a good atmosphere and I liked the place very much. Again a direct watercolour and the small car I began to paint went away before I finished and a truck blocked the view. The sympathetic owner of the restaurant came to see what I painted, asked me for a photograph and invited me to drink a three years old semi-sweet Madeira-wine with him. What a nice person and place.  (click to enlarge)

Wir hatten extrem nasses, windiges Wetter an diesem Morgen in Canical. Eigentlich wollten wir uns den Container- und Fährhafen ansehen, aber dann wurde es doch zu nass und wir flohen ins nahegelegene Restaurant Amarelo. Der Kaffee war gut und ich wollte die Boote, die gegenüber im Trockendock zur Reparatur lagen malen. Die Atmosphäre war angenehm und ich begann ein direktes Aquarell - ich versuchte wieder von links nach rechts zu malen, aber das kleine Auto fuhr bald weg und ein grösserer Truck behinderte ein wenig die Sicht. Der nette Inhaber des Restaurants war neugierig, was ich gemalt hatte und bat mich um ein Foto. Dann lud er mich zu einem drei-jährigen halbtrockenen Madeira-Wein ein. Ein sehr netter Wirt und ein schöner Platz zum Malen. (Vergrösserung der Bilder durch anklicken)

Sketchbook Madeira - Paradise Beach

Whoever remembers my last years post on Urban Sketchers Germany (klick) knows that at this beach below Christo Rei you are welcomed with the words: WELCOME TO PARADISE
 
Took the funicular down to the black pebble beach at Christo Rei. This time I used a black cretacolor pen for the outlines (to see that closer, click to enlarge) and than started with watercolour.

Tried to vary the surface of stones in front and the wall of the funicular in the foreground and the hilly landscape of the background. The sky was actually nearly close to turquoise that day as you see on my photo below. What a luck that I packed the colour into my set, although I just used it twice so far...

Wer sich noch an meinen letztjährigen Post über Madeira auf Urban Sketchers Germany (Klick) erinnert, weiss, dass man an diesem Strand mit den Worten: WILLKOMMEN IM PARADIES begrüsst wird. 

Wie beim letzten Besuch nahm ich die enorm steile Seilbahn unterhalb der Christo Rei Statue, um runter an den Strand mit den schwarzen Kieseln zu fahren.  Für mein Bild habe ich dieses Mal einen Cretacolor Stift für die Andeutung der Umrisse verwendet (für eine grössere Ansicht einfach das Bild anklicken) und danach erst die Aquarellfarbe aufgetragen. 

Ich wollte die Oberflächen der Steine im Gegensatz zur gemauerten Wand der Seilbahn und wiederum im Gegensatz zum Hintergrund variieren. Der Himmel war tatsächlich nahezu türkis an diesem Tag, was man auch auf dem untersten Foto sehen kann. Wie gut, dass ich türkis mit in mein Set gepackt habe, obwohl es bisher erst das zweite Mal verwendet wurde...

Sketchbook Madeira - Monte Palace

Today we were in Monte Palace Botanical Garden. They say it is one of the thirteen most beautiful botanical gardens in the world. And actually it is different from all botanical gardens I've seen so far. It is situated above Funchal with beautiful sights downhill wherever you go. There are also different exhibitions and museums on the site like african sculptures, and minerals/stones as well as beautiful Azulejos (that show important social and cultural events of Portuguese history - somehow it looks like "urban sketching on tiles" ;0)

From the Café-Terrace I could see the palace through leaves and trees and did a fast direct watercolour of it. On the photo below you see that in order to create more depth I added some colour later compared to the photo above as I was not completely satisfied and could not finish. 

Let's see what tomorrow will bring... 

Heute waren wir im Monte Palace (Botanischer Garten). Auf dem Prospekt, das man am Eingang erhält steht, dass es einer der dreizehn schönsten botanischen Gärten der Welt sei. Tatsächlich ist der Garten einzigartig mit seinen Blickachsen und Aussichtspunkten auf Funchal. Es gibt ausser den üppigen Pflanzen noch verschiedene Ausstellungen wie zB afrikanische Skulpturen und eine Mineralien-Ausstellung sowie sehr schöne gekachelte Wandbilder (die die wichtigen sozialen und historischen Ereignisse in der portugiesischen Geschichte aufzeigen - irgendwie sah das für mich ein wenig nach "Urban Sketching auf Kacheln" aus ;0)

Von der Café-Terrasse aus konnte man durch Bäume und Laub den Palast sehen und ich machte ein schnelles direktes Aquarell des Gebäudes. Am Foto unten kann man die noch unfertige Version sehen, die ich, um noch etwas mehr Tiefe zu erhalten später noch mit etwas mehr Farbe versehen habe, denn die Zeit dort war zu kurz, um sorgfältiger zu malen.

Sketchbook Madeira - Evening Sun in Canico de Baixo

An evening in Canico de Baixo. I am very close to the sea. The sun is already going down and everything is calm. So is the sea. From far you could see the statue of Christo Rei backlit and the sun does not touch anymore that side of the coast while the stones in front are lit by the remaining sunlight. I see tiny houses in the distance above the cliffs. As it is getting darker I am done with my direct watercolour. Another beautiful, creative day on the island in the Atlantic Ocean.

Ein Abend in Canico de Baixo. Ich bin sehr nah am Meer auf den Klippen. Die Sonne geht langsam unter und alles ist ruhig. Auch das Meer. Von der Ferne aus kann ich die Statue des Christo Rei auf seinem Felsen sehen. Der Felsen wird nur noch von hinten her beleuchtet und sieht von hier aus dunkelgrau aus, denn die Sonne kann diese Seite der Küste nicht mehr erreichen, während die Felsen im Vordergrund noch Sonne abbekommen. Ich sehe die kleinen, weit entfernten Häuser über den Klippen. Als es dunkler wird bin ich mit meinem direkten Aquarell fertig. Es war wieder ein schöner, ereignisreicher Tag auf der Insel im Atlantik.

Sketchbook Madeira - Camara de Lobos II

It is still in the morning and in Camara de Lobos it is getting warmer as the sun came out (When we came it was still a bit chilly). That's how I like it. My direct watercolour of Rui had to be a fast one as Rui nearly finished his boats and also Martinha was ready with her sketch. Below you find our three sketches.

 
Es ist noch immer am Vormittag und in Camara de Lobos wird es eben etwas wärmer, denn als wir drei heute mit dem Malen begannen brauchten wir noch Jacken. 

Inzwischen ist es sonnig und warm geworden. Da macht die Sache gleich noch mehr Spaß. Mein direktes Portrait musste schnell gehen, denn Rui war mit seinen Booten fast fertig und auch Martinha hatte ihre Skizze beendet. 

Now it is time to say THANK YOU to Rui and Martinha. We had a great time together and again I learned a lot (language-, culture- and art-wise). Every sketch-outing is a great opportunity to learn from each other. I would say: Celebrate these good times.

Jetzt ist es an der Zeit Rui und Martinha DANKE zu sagen. Wir hatten eine sehr schöne Zeit zusammen und wiedereinmal haben wir viel voneinander gelernt (sprachlich, kulturell und künstlerisch). Bei jedem Treffen gibt es so viele neue Eindrücke. In diesem Sinne: Man muss diese guten Zeiten feiern! 













After that we went to Cabo Girao and had the look from above to the tiny houses on the coastline. It is the highest Cabo in Europe and second highest in the world according to what I heard. There is a glass platform. After a coffee a bit higher in the mountains I had another watercolour only try (right side of the spread) with the landscape at Miradouro Cruz da Caldeira.

Danach gings ab zum Cabo Girao und wir hatten einen super Blick über die Küstenlinie mit den kleinen Häusern. So weit ich weiss ist es das höchste Cap Europas und das zweithöchste weltweit. Es gibt dort eine Glass-Plattform. Nach einem Kaffee ein wenig höher in den Bergen, versuchte ich nochmal ein direktes Aquarell (siehe rechte Seite) mit der Landschaft am Aussichtspunkt Cruz da Caldeira.

Sketchbook Madeira - Camara de Lobos

Today is a special day, as I have an appointment to paint with the Madeirense Artist and Urban Sketcher Rui Soares. Usually he paints large acrylics and oil paintings which are to be seen on his facebook artist page. 

I was a bit early and sat down directly on the mole in front of the ships and my sight was inland. It was still a bit chilly.  I unpacked my tiny watercolour box and began to paint in direct watercolour from the left to the right side in order not to smudge the colour on my watercolour sketchbook. To the left of my drawing there was the little church, then the houses with shops and cafés and then I focused on the blue fishermens boat. 

As I was painting, Rui the leader of Urban Sketchers Madeira and Martinha another fellow Urbansketcher arrived and after a warm welcome they installed themselves to join me in painting and drawing. Martinha went to Churchills painting spot. She drew the other harbour side with black ink. 

Rui focused on the boats in watercolour technique. He used a paint brush for that (a brush with water reservoir). I continued with the lush green mountains full of banana plantations and just a few houses in the background. Then my concentration was gone and I went photographing the surroundings and my friends. Then I wanted to make another watercolour sketch and the obligatory final sketch photos will follow...tomorrow...stay tuned

Heute ist ein ganz besonderer Tag, denn ich habe eine Verabredung zum Malen mit dem Madeirenser Künstler und Urban Sketcher Rui Soares. Normalerweise malt er grosse Acryl- und Ölbilder, die man z.T. auf seiner Facebook-Seite sehen kann. 

An diesem Tag war ich schon etwas früher am Ort des Geschehens, denn ich wollte ja auf keinen Fall irgendeinen Moment verpassen. Es war noch etwas kühl. Ich setzte mich direkt an die Mole vor den Schiffen und Booten und mein Blick richtete sich auf die Landseite. Ich packte mein kleines Reise-Aquarellset aus und begann ein direktes Aquarell. Ich versuchte diszipliniert von links nach rechts zu malen, damit ich meine Farbe nicht mit dem Handrücken verschmiere. Die Gebäude von links nach rechts sind: eine kleine Kirche, verschiedene Cafés und Läden und dann direkt vor mir das blaue Fischerboot.

Während ich so da saß kam Rui (der Kopf von USk Madeira) und Martinha (eben falls Urban Sketcherin) an und es gab ein grosses Hallo, denn wir kannten uns ja bereits vom XX. Treffen im letzten Jahr (Hier ein Film von Rui darüber)

Martinha war an Churchills Painting Spot und zeichnete von dort aus mit schwarzer Tusche die gegenüberliegende Hafenseite. 

Rui befasste sich mit den Booten und malte in Aquarelltechnik.  Er benutzte eine Paint Brush (mit Wasserreservoir).

Ich selbst machte mit dem grünen Hintergrund der Bananen-Plantagen und den wenigen Häusern im Hintergrund weiter, aber meine Konzentration ließ irgendwann nach und ich stand auf, um die Umgebung und meine Malfreunde zu fotografieren.  

Dann aber packte mich der Ehrgeiz wieder und ich begann nocheinmal ein direktes Aquarell. Aber davon und von den finalen Sketchfotos berichte ich dann morgen...bis dann... 

Sketchbook Madeira - Sea and Garden View

Back at our home base while we are on Madeira Island I enjoyed the view from my balcony. The view to the front left was the sea and to the very right this is what I saw. A tiny street, a walled garden and some houses, in the background the mountains. Everything is close and it is unbelievably green. The Island is covered with all kinds of tropical plants. The abundance of flowers and colours is what a painter is searching for. Enough direct watercolour for today I have to have a bite. Tomorrow is a special day as I will meet a friend...

Zurück in unserer Home-base auf Madeira hab ich mich mit meinen Farben auf den Balkon gesetzt. Das Meer ist direkt links vor uns und wenn man nach rechts blickt, kann man den Ausblick sehen, den ich direkt mit dem Pinsel gemalt habe: Eine kleine Straße, ein mit Mauern eingesäumter Garten am Hang, einige Häuser und im Hintergrund die Berge. Alles ist so nah und so unglaublich grün. Die Insel ist bedeckt mit allen Arten von tropischen Pflanzen. Die verschiedenen Blumen und leuchtenden Farben sind genau das, was man als Maler haben will. Jetzt habe ich aber genug direktes Aquarell für heute gemalt. Ich brauch mal was zu essen. Morgen ist ausserdem ein wichtiger Tag, denn da treffe ich einen Freund wieder...

Sketchbook Madeira - Besides the Castle

It is a new day and we are heading to Funchal via curvy roads. Close to the Castelo we discovered another bathing/fishing platform where fishermen and a few locals enjoyed the pool, restored boats or worked on them or sat in the sun. Only a small number of people came by this quiet place and it was a good feeling sitting in the sun with watercolour brush in hand and enjoying the surroundings and the beautiful weather whilst in my homecountry the temperatures are below zero. This is another direct watercolour with no preliminary pencil drawing.

Ein neuer Tag und wir sind auf dem Weg nach Funchal über kurvige Straßen und pittureske Wege. In der Nähe des Castelo entdeckten wir eine Fischer-/Badeplattform wo einige Einheimische badeten und einige Fischer ihre Boote restaurierten oder an ihnen arbeiteten. Nur wenige Leute kamen hier vorbei und es war eine sehr ruhige, entspannte Atmosphäre in der warmen Sonne zu sitzen und zu malen, während es bei uns Zuhause unter null Grad hatte. Das obere Bild ist wieder ein direktes Aquarell, ohne Vorzeichnung.

 

Sketchbook Madeira - View from the cliffs

On the way to the platform you either take the lift or you take the stairs. The bathing platform is easily reachable. I started with a view of the houses that could be seen from there...but it was beginning to rain. My direct watercolour was a bit destroyed by the rain and as the rain became stronger it made me leave for not getting too wet. You can see the little splashes on my watercolour paper. Maybe I will try this view again in the next few days under better conditions...that's it for today...
  
Auf die Badeplattform kann man entweder mit dem Lift oder mit Treppen gelangen. Die Plattform ist sehr einfach erreichbar und ich hatte keine Mühe mein direktes Aquarell der Häuser, die sich am Hang festkrallten zu beginnen, aber es gab ein kleines Problem...es fing an leicht zu regnen. Mein Bild wurde dadurch etwas zerstört und als es dann doch zu naß wurde, musste ich meinen Platz verlassen und Schutz vor dem Regen suchen. An den kleinen Mustern auf meinem Blatt kann man die Punkte sehen, die die Regentropfen auf der Farbe hinterlassen. Vielleicht versuche ich den Blick an einem anderen Tag nochmal...soweit für heute...

Sketchbook Madeira - Old house in Canico

Now heading to Canico de Baixo to another nice place by the sea (...everything here is close to the sea...)

There you could see the waves rolling in from the sea and you can eat the famous "bolo do caco" a traditional bread (very tasty) but I was more interested in an old house to the hillside and began my direct watercolour. Right as I was thinking that a lot of greens are needed for the abundant Flora, I had to stop drawing...consequently I did not finish this sketch as we wanted to explore the bathing platform nearby as long as the sun was still shining.

Jetzt geht es ab nach Canico de Baixo an einen anderen Ort direkt am Meer (...alles ist hier direkt am Meer...)

Hier kann man die Wellen beobachten und einen der berühmten "Bolo do Caco" , ein traditionelles Brot, essen (sehr lecker). Ich hingegen war mehr interessiert an einem alten Häuschen auf der Bergseite und begann mein direktes Aquarell - ohne Vorzeichnung. Gerade als ich bei mir dachte, dass man hier enorm viele verschiedene Grüntöne benötigt, da die Flora hier so üppig ist, musste ich leider aufhören zu Malen. Es war nicht mehr genügend Zeit vorhanden, denn solange das Wetter so gut war wollten wir noch die nahegelegene Badeplattform besuchen. 

Sketchbook Madeira - Machico Boats

One of the spots I enjoy to visit at the beginning of my time in Madeira is Baia Beach Club in Machico which is situated directly by the harbour surrounded by a hilly landscape like a big theatre in which lies the city of Machico. Here is also one of the few sandy beaches of the island. A good view to the boats of the harbour is guaranteed and the soft clicking and the water sounds are to be heard and mix with the background music of the speakers at the café. The tostas are great here and you can sit forever and draw. I was a bit lazy and drew just two of the many boats (photo below). Here is my last years drawing from the same spot: HERE 

Einer der Orte, die ich besonders gerne mag ist der Ort Machico. Direkt am Hafen gibt es ein Café mit Blick auf die Boote und der Ort mit einem der wenigen Sandstrände der Insel schmiegt sich in ein Tal, das von Bergen umgeben ist. Der gute Blick auf die Boote ist hier garantiert und das Klicken der Bootsmasten und Seile und die Geräusche der Wellen mischen sich mit der leisen Musik aus den Lautsprechern des Cafés. Die Toasts sind hier gut und man kann ewig sitzen und malen. Heute war ich ein wenig faul und hab nur zwei der vielen Boote gemalt. Das sieht man im unteren Vergleichsfoto. Sketchbook Madeira - Christo Rei (+ my thoughts about sketching in public)

This is one of my favourite spots. The Christo Rei is on top of the hill and the way down to a windy place is easier - the way uphill a bit sporty - and at the moment it is not recommended to go there as the way is not in best shape (closed).

Drawing in public - Don't care - just draw: 

I often hear artists say that sketching in public is hard for them and that they didn't like viewers. In the beginning I had the same problem of shyness, but I do that for years now and the more I sketch outside the more I enjoy the contact to the people around me while I sketch.

The shyness goes away and with the experience you even enjoy the nice people talking to you. You get to know a lot about them as they often tell you their stories and nearly everyone has a relative who draws somehow ;0)... Lots of people are even proud if you draw their house or city and are quite interested in what you are doing (....in Italy this happened a lot....).

So there is nothing to lose - and you even win as you get to know people you would never have met and hear their interesting stories.

Das ist einer meiner Lieblingsorte: die Christo Rei Statue auf dem Hügel bei Canico. Unterhalb ist es sehr windig und der Weg wieder raufwärts sehr sportlich...zur Zeit ist der Weg nicht empfehlenswert, da er eigentlich aufgrund der baufälligen Stufen und Geländer gesperrt ist.

Malen in der Öffentlichkeit - einfach machen...: 

Wenn ich mit anderen Künstlern rede, höre ich öfters, dass sie es schwierig finden, draussen zu malen und dass es unangenehm ist, wenn jemand zuschaut. Am Anfang ging mir das genauso. Mit der Zeit gewöhnt man sich daran und schätzt sogar den Kontakt zu den Menschen und die guten Gespräche, die sich entwickeln. 

Die Scheu geht von alleine weg und die Leute freuen sich über einen Plausch und erzählen Stories aus ihrem Leben. Fast jeder hat irgendeinen Verwandten der malt ;0)... Viele Leute sind stolz, wenn man ihre Häuser oder ihre Stadt malt (...vor allem in Italien hatte ich interessante Gespräche...)

Es gibt also nur was zu gewinnen und nichts zu verlieren... 

Sketchbook Madeira - Eastend

A double spread of the coast with its dark cliffs, the green vegetation and the beautiful blue sea. I brought turquoise but from my last visit I know that the colours of the sea here need some more darker blues like indigo or indanthrone blue. As I did not try lunar blue so far, I packed a tube of it into my bag (I have that tube from the goodie bag of the USk Symposium in Porto and will try it as soon as I have the opportunity - no idea what it looks like - so this will be the surprise colour of my travels this time). Let's see if I find something to draw for tomorrow...

Eine Doppelseite der Küste mit den sehr dunklen Klippen, der üppigen Vegetation und dem blauen Meer. Türkis habe ich wieder eingepackt, aber vom letzten Besuch her weiss ich, dass man hier auch viele dunkle Blautöne wie Indigo oder Indanthrone brauchen kann. Ausserdem habe ich eine Tube Lunar Blue DS in meine Tasche gepackt, denn diese Farbe habe ich noch von der Symposium-Goodie-Bag und wollte sie längst einmal ausprobieren - das ist also dieses Mal meine Überraschungs-Farbe. Genug für heute.  Mal sehen, ob ich einen schönen Platz für Morgen zum Malen finde.

Sketchbook Madeira - Straße in Canico

The hotel is georgeous, the weather fine, sketchbook in my bag, holidays can begin.

This is a street in Canico. We come by here to walk further to the statue of Christo Rei.

I still have to adapt to the change of colours and weather compared to the white snowy weather at home.

Das Hotel ist toll, das Wetter gut, mein Skizzenbuch in der Handtasche, der Urlaub kann beginnen...

Hier eine Strasse in Canico. Wir kommen hier auf dem Weg zur Christus-Statue vorbei. 

Ein bißchen muss ich mich noch an die Veränderung der Farben und des Klimas gewöhnen, wenn man aus dem kalten, nassen Schneewetter Zuhause hierherkommt.

Sketchbook Madeira - Yeah I am back

Hello from the beautiful Island of Madeira. I am back as I loved it so much last year and I did not get to see all the things I wanted to see last time so I make another try to see more and sketch here. But as I am on a short holiday no stress... (tomorrow more...as I am real tired. We had a flight through the night and did not sleep...)

Hallo von der schönen Insel Madeira. Ich bin wieder hier und freue mich so, weil ich beim letzten Mal nicht alles gesehen habe, was ich mir vorgenommen hatte und jetzt habe ich nochmal die Chance ein paar Tage hier zu verbringen, viel zu sehen und wieder hier zu skizzieren. Aber da ich hier auf Kurzurlaub bin...nur kein Stress... (morgen mehr...denn ich bin sehr müde. Der Flug war über Nacht und wir konnten nicht schlafen...)

Malta, Valletta + trip reflections

Here are some of my trip reflections from my sketching adventure on Malta Island:

1. Less is more. Travelling light is the key. I took only a small amount of material with me which was good: An A5 watercolour book, my travel palette and some new tube colours I brought and all of them where excellent and well chosen which were turquoise, organic vermilion, new gamboge, etc.
2. The passion to draw outside is much easier to realize in warmer countries so I would like to try to travel more in the cold German winter.
3. I simplified my sketches as I often had to leave before finishing - no worries about the unfinished (and you don't have to draw everything.)
4. I used a thicker brush which makes my drawing faster and more loose
5. Most of the drawings I did were direct watercolours - only for difficult buildings I still use the pencil to draw the lines first.
6. My sketches are pieces of reportage and I always note my thoughts on separate sheets (in the pouch of the last side of the sketchbook), maybe I should incorporate some more text into the drawing itself?

Malta is a great place full of history and definitely there is so much more that can be sketched or painted. I would have loved to do more architectural sketches of the beautiful light yellow and ocre buildings mainly in the city of Valetta with those wooden balconies...and the beautiful churches...and the harbours... Now that I am back my mind is still in Malta. What a luck that the weather is warm now in my area (we have unusual "summer temperatures" in April which is great!). My Malta sketchbook is not entirely full which means this is a good pretext to get back there soon!

Hier einige Überlegungen zu meiner Reise:

1. Weniger ist mehr. Ich hab nur wenig Material zum Zeichnen mitgenommen wie z.B. mein A5 Aquarellbuch, meine Reisepalette und einige Tubenfarben wie z.B. Türkis, Organic Vermilion, New Gamboge,...
2. Die Leidenschaft draussen zu malen lässt sich in wärmeren Ländern auch im Winter gut ausüben, daher muss man einfach öfters im Winter reisen, wenn man aus einem kalten Land kommt.
3. Viele Skizzen habe ich sehr vereinfacht und inzwischen ist es mir auch egal, ob ich mit der Skizze fertig geworden bin oder nicht...
4. Dieses Mal habe ich auch einen dickeren Pinsel mitgenommen, damit ich schneller und lockerer male.
5. Die meisten Malta-Bilder sind "direkte Aquarelle", die nicht mit dem Bleistift vorgezeichnet wurden. Es war mein Ziel so wenig Bleistift wie möglich einzusetzten und das habe ich dann nur bei den etwas komplizierteren Strukturen, wie z.B. der Queen Victoria, dem Ford Capri, dem Löwen, usw. gemacht.
6. Meine Skizzen sollen meine Reise dokumentieren. In einer Tasche hinten im Skizzenbuch habe ich meine Texte auf separaten Papieren, denn ich notiere mir immer vor Ort schon einige Stichworte, um nichts zu vergessen. Sollte ich mehr Text in die Skizzen einbinden?

Malta ist super und es gibt sooo viel zu malen. Gerne hätte ich mehr architektonische Skizzen gemacht und auch mehr Schiffe und Häfen gemalt, aber die Zeit reichte mir nicht. Nun bin ich wieder zurück und das Wetter ist in Deutschland momentan super (fast sommerliche Temperaturen - und das im April!). Das Malta-Skizzenbuch ist noch nicht ganz voll, d.h. ich sollte bald mal wieder dorthin reisen, um weiterzumalen. 

Malta, The Beach

What should I say! It was great in Malta! I had a very creative and pleasant time and what could be better than short flighttime, good weather, super people, rich culture, good food, beautiful surroundings and lots of possibilities to draw! The above drawing shows the beach I stayed at lots of times and from there some of the St. Paul's Bay views were drawn.

Was soll ich sagen! Es war toll in Malta! Es war eine sehr angenehme und kreative Zeit. Es gibt nichts Besseres als eine kurze Flugzeit, gutes Wetter, nette Leute, eine reiche Kultur, gutes Essen, eine wunderbare Umgebung und jede Menge Möglichkeiten zum Zeichnen! Die obere Zeichnung zeigt den Strand an dem ich mich öfters aufgehalten habe und von dem aus ich einige Bilder gemalt habe.

Some of the old houses in Malta have very beautiful "doorknockers" and decorations. The lion was my absolute favourite.

Einige der alten Häuser in Malta haben sehr schöne und z.T. auch fantasievolle Türklopfer und Türdekorationen. Der Löwe war mein Favorit.
