MALTA: Last sketches...flowers and ships

 

These flowers looked interesting to me. I think these are some lilies? Not sure. Just a few lines and a bit of colour as I was on the way to the ferry terminal from Malta to Gozo. Wanted to sketch ferries and water...

On the way, I made a stop in Mellieha, close to the Tunnara Museum and sketched ships on dry dock.

 Then, after a coffee, the ferry terminal, a few km's further...

The ferry itself is huge.

 

Thats all from Malta now, I think. Will post more, if I forgot something.

 

MALTA: Stones and Sea

 

While I was sketching the stones and the shallow waters in front of me some school classes were searching for sea creatures around me. There is the national aquarium a few hundred metres from here, where they were, before coming to the beach and looking for crabs and snails. 

 

In the evening I did a fast watercolour of the view from a cocktail bar. (see half of my glass to the right...)

MALTA - fast sketches

 

Here come my fastest sketches. The upper one was done between starter and the hot meals and the next one is a people's sketch, done directly with a brown inkpen and then watercoloured on the spot.

I am often astonished on how spontaneous some fast sketches turn out... reduced to a minimum.

MALTA: Sketching Wildflowers in Qawra

 

There was a great abundance of wildflowers this time of year so I dedicated one day to sketching them beside seaside kiosk.

 

MALTA: Dolmen - St. Julian's - Valletta

 

The evening before, I arrived in Malta. Next day I start with my Dolmen sketch in Bugibba. The Dolmen are stones and said to be the remains of an ancient temple. 

From there I continue my trip through Malta along the coastline to the nice harbour of St. Julian's, where I do an unfinished sketch of a shipyard close to a real nice café, from where I had a good view.

Then I reach Sliema and from there it is not far to a cafe directly by the sea, which I know from other travels to this place.

 

Then finally I reach Valletta, where I do some sightseeing and later relax in a side street to sketch

Some people around were eating noodles at a chinese Restaurant. Not many tourists here compared to former years.

 

In the evening I ended up hiding in a café from the strong winds sketching the palm trees on a double spread...very tired already...

 

Landscapeartclub - Week 10

 

On the flight back I did the next weeks challenge of a picture from Hastings Garden in Malta. I simplified this landscape a lot as it was a very small sketchbook paper.

Auf dem Rückflug malte ich ein Bild vom Hastings Garden. Die Landschaft habe ich in mein sehr kleines Skizzenbuch gemalt und daher sehr stark vereinfacht.

Malta, Valletta + trip reflections

Here are some of my trip reflections from my sketching adventure on Malta Island:

1. Less is more. Travelling light is the key. I took only a small amount of material with me which was good: An A5 watercolour book, my travel palette and some new tube colours I brought and all of them where excellent and well chosen which were turquoise, organic vermilion, new gamboge, etc.
2. The passion to draw outside is much easier to realize in warmer countries so I would like to try to travel more in the cold German winter.
3. I simplified my sketches as I often had to leave before finishing - no worries about the unfinished (and you don't have to draw everything.)
4. I used a thicker brush which makes my drawing faster and more loose
5. Most of the drawings I did were direct watercolours - only for difficult buildings I still use the pencil to draw the lines first.
6. My sketches are pieces of reportage and I always note my thoughts on separate sheets (in the pouch of the last side of the sketchbook), maybe I should incorporate some more text into the drawing itself?

Malta is a great place full of history and definitely there is so much more that can be sketched or painted. I would have loved to do more architectural sketches of the beautiful light yellow and ocre buildings mainly in the city of Valetta with those wooden balconies...and the beautiful churches...and the harbours... Now that I am back my mind is still in Malta. What a luck that the weather is warm now in my area (we have unusual "summer temperatures" in April which is great!). My Malta sketchbook is not entirely full which means this is a good pretext to get back there soon!

Hier einige Überlegungen zu meiner Reise:

1. Weniger ist mehr. Ich hab nur wenig Material zum Zeichnen mitgenommen wie z.B. mein A5 Aquarellbuch, meine Reisepalette und einige Tubenfarben wie z.B. Türkis, Organic Vermilion, New Gamboge,...
2. Die Leidenschaft draussen zu malen lässt sich in wärmeren Ländern auch im Winter gut ausüben, daher muss man einfach öfters im Winter reisen, wenn man aus einem kalten Land kommt.
3. Viele Skizzen habe ich sehr vereinfacht und inzwischen ist es mir auch egal, ob ich mit der Skizze fertig geworden bin oder nicht...
4. Dieses Mal habe ich auch einen dickeren Pinsel mitgenommen, damit ich schneller und lockerer male.
5. Die meisten Malta-Bilder sind "direkte Aquarelle", die nicht mit dem Bleistift vorgezeichnet wurden. Es war mein Ziel so wenig Bleistift wie möglich einzusetzten und das habe ich dann nur bei den etwas komplizierteren Strukturen, wie z.B. der Queen Victoria, dem Ford Capri, dem Löwen, usw. gemacht.
6. Meine Skizzen sollen meine Reise dokumentieren. In einer Tasche hinten im Skizzenbuch habe ich meine Texte auf separaten Papieren, denn ich notiere mir immer vor Ort schon einige Stichworte, um nichts zu vergessen. Sollte ich mehr Text in die Skizzen einbinden?

Malta ist super und es gibt sooo viel zu malen. Gerne hätte ich mehr architektonische Skizzen gemacht und auch mehr Schiffe und Häfen gemalt, aber die Zeit reichte mir nicht. Nun bin ich wieder zurück und das Wetter ist in Deutschland momentan super (fast sommerliche Temperaturen - und das im April!). Das Malta-Skizzenbuch ist noch nicht ganz voll, d.h. ich sollte bald mal wieder dorthin reisen, um weiterzumalen. 

Malta, The Beach

What should I say! It was great in Malta! I had a very creative and pleasant time and what could be better than short flighttime, good weather, super people, rich culture, good food, beautiful surroundings and lots of possibilities to draw! The above drawing shows the beach I stayed at lots of times and from there some of the St. Paul's Bay views were drawn.

Was soll ich sagen! Es war toll in Malta! Es war eine sehr angenehme und kreative Zeit. Es gibt nichts Besseres als eine kurze Flugzeit, gutes Wetter, nette Leute, eine reiche Kultur, gutes Essen, eine wunderbare Umgebung und jede Menge Möglichkeiten zum Zeichnen! Die obere Zeichnung zeigt den Strand an dem ich mich öfters aufgehalten habe und von dem aus ich einige Bilder gemalt habe.

Malta, Türklopfer Löwe

Some of the old houses in Malta have very beautiful "doorknockers" and decorations. The lion was my absolute favourite.

Einige der alten Häuser in Malta haben sehr schöne und z.T. auch fantasievolle Türklopfer und Türdekorationen. Der Löwe war mein Favorit.

Malta, Fassade

Sometimes I really enjoy fiddling on an object like this detailed window above the door where you can practice some "negative painting". It is a bit like playing with the watercolour brush...a tiny touch here and another dab there...happy sketching...

Manchmal mache ich gerne die "Fleissarbeit", wie bei dem detaillierten Oberlicht dieser Tür. Das "Negativ-Malen" mit dem Pinsel macht Spaß ...ein bißchen hier und ein bißchen da...happy sketching...

Malta, Ford Capri

On a Sunday during our stay the Maltese Ford Club had a meeting at the National Aquarium where you could see all those beautiful antique cars.

Während unseres Aufenthaltes traf sich der maltesische Ford Club am Aquarium in Qawra und man konnte die schönen antiken Autos bewundern.

Malta, Eckhaus mit Malteser-Kreuzen

My travel guide says that during world war II lots of houses were destroyed in some areas of Malta and in the touristic centres some less pretty houses were built. The house in this corner of St. Paul's Bay is a really old one and it is very pretty with the Maltese crosses on the balconies.

Während des 2. Weltkriegs wurden lt. meinem Reiseführer auf Malta viele Häuser zerstört und in der Folgezeit wurden auch einige Bausünden vor allem in den Touristenzentren begangen. In St. Paul's Bay gibt es aber auch so hübsche Häuser wie dieses mit Malteser-Kreuzen an den Balkonen.

Malta, Kirche des gestrandeten St. Paulus

This is St. Paul's shipwreck church. To the left side is the ocean. Here I used a new colour as well. It is a translucent ocre from Schmincke and I like it. It is softer than the usual yellow ocre and it sort of granulates when you use it thick directly out of the tube. If you have seen my shipwreck drawing a few days ago, this church is not too far away from the spot where the Hephaestus shipwrecked.

Das ist die Kirche des gestrandeten St. Paulus. Links ist das Meer. Hier habe ich eine neue Farbe verwendet und zwar die Lasurocker von Schmincke und ich finde sie gut. Es ist eine sehr leichte und extrem dünn auftragbare Farbe und sie granuliert ein wenig, wenn man sie dick direkt aus der Tube verwendet. Falls ihr mein Aquarell vom Schiffswrack (vor ein paar Tagen) gesehen habt: Diese Kirche ist nicht sehr weit davon entfernt.

Malta, St. Paul's Bay

 

If you follow the promenade in Bugibba you come by several jetties and this place where some small boats lay ashore. To the right there is a café and a good sight to the Wignacourt Tower I already painted. Here I used a lot of turquoise as the sea was very bright in the sunshine.

Wenn man in Bugibba die Strandpromenade entlang läuft kommt man an verschiedenen Anlegestellen vorbei und auch an diesem Platz, an dem kleine Boote an Land liegen. Rechts unten befindet sich ein Cafe und man hat von dort aus einen guten Blick auf den Wignacourt Turm, den ich schon gemalt habe. Für das Meer habe ich viel Türkis verwendet, da es in der Sonne fast türkisblau leuchtet.

Malta, Wignacourt Tower

The oldest defense tower on the coast of Malta which dates from the year 1610. It is huge. I did not have too much time so I neglected the details on the houses to the right.

Der Turm ist der älteste Verteidigungsposten an der Küste von Malta aus dem Jahr 1610. Er ist riesig. Ich hatte wenig Zeit zum Malen, also keine Details an den Häusern auf der rechten Seite.

Malta, bewölkter Himmel und rauhe See

This evening we have unusually high waves, a clouded sky and some isolated showers in Bugibba. My concern was: how to draw the wild sea and waves...I used a lot of water and fast brush strokes and a new to me colour: Phtalo blue. In the foreground some turquoise and light green.

Heute Abend haben wir ungewöhnlich hohe Wellen, einen bewölkten Himmel und vereinzelte Schauer in Bugibba. Wie stellt man ein sehr bewegtes Meer mit Wellen dar? Ich hab einfach mal eine Menge Wasser und sehr kräftige Pinselstriche dafür angewendet und auch eine für mich neue Farbe ausprobiert: Phtalo Blau. Im Vordergrund mit Türkis und Hellgrün gemischt.

Malta, Seaside Café...und die Erde ist doch rund!

...and the earth is actually round?! This is what you think if you see my double spread beneath - I don't know what happened to me while drawing and in the end I let it be as is and did not change it. Maybe because the Greek ship Hephaestus was laying aslant? I desperately needed a coffee so I stopped in a Café around the corner.

...und die Erde ist doch rund könnte man meinen, wenn man meine Doppelseite unten ansieht...irgendwie habe ich beim Malen selbst Schlagseite bekommen, fast wie das Schiff Hephaestus. Aber da meine Erde rund ist, bleibt die Skizze genau wie sie ist und wird nicht mehr geändert. Wie immer brauchte ich zwischendurch einen Kaffee und bin so hier gleich um die Ecke gelandet.

On February 12 (nearly two months ago) during a heavy storm the greek ship HEPHAESTUS crashed onto the rocks of Qawra in Malta. The ship is still there, very close to the esplanade. The captain and his crew saved their lives fleeing from board with some injuries and just the clothes they wore at that time. If you go by this ship on a beautiful day like today you would not believe that this could have happened.

While I was drawing this one lots of people stopped and talked to me and told me their stories about the ship, their lifes, their kids and some asked me what had happened here. It was a very communicative drawing site.

Am 12. Februar dieses Jahres (also vor knapp zwei Monaten) havarierte das griechische Schiff HEPHAESTUS auf den Klippen von Malta bei Qawra. Das Schiff ist noch immer da, ganz nahe an der Strandpromenade. Der Kapitän und seine Crew konnten sich in diesem heftigen Sturm mit einigen Blessuren und nur mit den Kleidern, die sie an diesem Tag trugen von Bord retten. Wenn man nun an einem schönen Tag wie heute dort vorbeigeht kann man es kaum glauben, dass so etwas passieren konnte.

Als ich dort gemalt habe stellten sich viele Leute neben mich, um mit mir zu plaudern und erzählten mir ihre Geschichten über das Schiff, ihr Leben, Ihre Kinder und einige fragten mich auch, was denn hier passiert sei. Es war ein sehr kommunikativer Mal-Platz.

Malta, Queen Victoria

We are on Republic Square in Valletta, Malta. The nice Café we are at is called Cordina, which is the oldest Café in Valletta. After a statue of Queen Victoria was installed in the 19th century in this square, it became known as Queen's Square or Piazza Regina. We try the typical Maltese Pastizzi with ricotta cheese and those with mushy peas and minced-beef filling while I draw Queen Victoria. Here we had the best Capuccino so far on the Island. The National Library building is situated behind us. This is a place to sit, relax and draw in a city full of history.

Maltesisches Kachelmuster:

Wir sind auf dem Republic Square in Valletta, Malta. Das schöne Café, in dem wir sitzen heißt Cordina und ist das älteste Kaffeehaus in Valletta. Nachdem im 19. Jhd. eine Statue der Königin Victoria auf diesem Platz aufgestellt wurde, nennen viele den Platz Queen's Square oder Piazza Regina. Wir probieren das typisch maltesische Gebäck (Blätterteig) mit Ricottafüllung und eines mit Mushy Peas und minced-beef Füllung, während ich die Königin Victoria male. Hier haben wir bisher auch den besten Capuccino getrunken. Die Bibliothek befindet sich direkt hinter uns. Dieser historische Platz lädt zum Relaxen, Schauen und Malen förmlich ein.

Malta, Bastion bei Upper Barrakka Gardens

For this one I started directly in watercolour, but used watercolour pencils in the end to help define the perspective as this was very tricky. (For all other drawings so far I used only direct watercolour). At the moment I am beneath Upper Barrakka Gardens, a public parc of Valletta, which is the highest point of St. Peter and St. Paul Bastion. At 12 o'clock every day there is a ceremony with one salute canon and the visitors have a beautiful view to the Grand Harbour from here. Now that I am in the Café Deux Baronnes close to the Saluting Battery I draw the arches. You will note that on the double spread - right side I lost somehow track as I had to hurry to see more of the city. Ok again an unfinished - but who cares...

Bei diesem Bild habe ich direkt mit dem Pinsel begonnen, aber am Ende wegen der etwas verzwickten Perspektive der Bögen noch Aquarellstifte zur genaueren Definition eingesetzt. Die Bögen hatten es in sich (alle anderen Bilder bisher wurden nur direkt mit dem Pinsel gemalt). Ich befinde mich unterhalb der Upper Barrakka Gardens, einer öffentlichen Parkanlage in Valletta, die sich auf dem höchsten Punkt der Stadtbefestigung auf der St. Peter und St. Paul Bastion befindet. Ich konnte um 12 Uhr die Zeremonie und den Kanonenschuss von der Bastion aus verfolgen und hatte einen herrlichen Ausblick auf den Grand Harbour. Nun bin ich im Café Deux Baronnes in der Nähe der Saluting Battery und male diese Ansicht. Auf der Doppelseite hab ich die Perspektive irgendwie etwas aus den Augen verloren und konnte das Bild auch nicht fertig machen, denn ich musste ja mal wieder weiter...

A few tips for the use of watercolour pencils:

Watercolour pencils look like usual pencils. If you use water with them the colour looks like watercolour

1. Do not water in the beginning. Just use the pencils dry and water when you finished the drawing
2. Draw boldly for getting enough colour on the paper
3. For contrasts leave some areas white on the paper
4. You can cross hatch or put different colours together - with water you can blend them
5. Don't go back over wet places as it get's muddy - wait till dry.
6. Keep some marks and details rather than blend everything together

Hier noch ein paar Tips zur Anwendung der Aquarellstifte:

Die Stifte sehen aus wie einfache Farbstifte, lassen sich aber mit dem Pinsel und Wasser anlösen und man kann tolle Effekte erzeugen.

1. Das Papier nicht wässern, sondern trocken beginnen und erst ganz am Ende mit einem nassen Pinsel anlösen und vermalen.
2. Um genug Farbe zum späteren aquarellieren zu haben, sollte die Farbe dick aufgetragen werden.
3. Damit Kontraste besser zu sehen sind, ist es gut auch einige Flächen in der Zeichnung weiss zu lassen.
4. Man kann die Farben auch schraffieren oder mehrere unterschiedliche Farben zusammen auftragen und später mit Wasser anlösen, damit sich die Farben vermischen.
5. Solange das Papier noch nass ist, nicht nochmal mit den Stiften in die nassen Stellen malen, denn dann wird die Zeichnung schlammig. Unbedingt warten, bis die erste Lage trocken ist.
6. Einige Linien sollte man aber stehen lassen und nicht anlösen, damit die Zeichnung nicht komplett zerläuft und einige Kanten erhalten bleiben.
