Whoever remembers my last years post on Urban Sketchers Germany (klick) knows that at this beach below Christo Rei you are welcomed with the words: WELCOME TO PARADISE
Took the funicular down to the black pebble beach at Christo Rei. This time I used a black cretacolor pen for the outlines (to see that closer, click to enlarge) and than started with watercolour.
Tried to vary the surface of stones in front and the wall of the funicular in the foreground and the hilly landscape of the background. The sky was actually nearly close to turquoise that day as you see on my photo below. What a luck that I packed the colour into my set, although I just used it twice so far...

Wer sich noch an meinen letztjährigen Post über Madeira auf Urban Sketchers Germany (Klick) erinnert, weiss, dass man an diesem Strand mit den Worten: WILLKOMMEN IM PARADIES begrüsst wird.
Wie beim letzten Besuch nahm ich die enorm steile Seilbahn unterhalb der Christo Rei Statue, um runter an den Strand mit den schwarzen Kieseln zu fahren. Für mein Bild habe ich dieses Mal einen Cretacolor Stift für die Andeutung der Umrisse verwendet (für eine grössere Ansicht einfach das Bild anklicken) und danach erst die Aquarellfarbe aufgetragen.
Ich wollte die Oberflächen der Steine im Gegensatz zur gemauerten Wand der Seilbahn und wiederum im Gegensatz zum Hintergrund variieren. Der Himmel war tatsächlich nahezu türkis an diesem Tag, was man auch auf dem untersten Foto sehen kann. Wie gut, dass ich türkis mit in mein Set gepackt habe, obwohl es bisher erst das zweite Mal verwendet wurde...

After a rainshower the sun is back and we use the cable railway at the station close to the Christo Rei Statue. It leads down to a black stone covered beach and the slogan "welcome to paradise" is written on top of the roof of the café beneath the cable railway. Therefore I call it Paradise Beach. Today only few persons are around. The wind cannot hit us here as it is very sheltered. The ocean has about 18° Celsius and I decide to draw and not to swim. I sit in the Restaurante O Mero and look direction Funchal in the background. I try to use Catarinas waterbrush again... I have nearly finished my drawing as it starts to rain. (if you click to enlarge you see the sprinkles all over). I flee under the roof of the Café and finish. The funicular makes soft noises and the waves with their regular sound make me sleepy. I need another coffee...
Nach einem Regenschauer ist die Sonne zurück und wir sind mit der Seilbahn beim Christo Rei runter zum Strand gefahren. Auf dem Dach des Cafés kann man den Slogan "Welcome to paradise" lesen. Deshalb nenne ich diesen Strand Paradise Beach. Ein Paradies, das heute nur von wenigen Personen besucht wird. Der Strand mit runden schwarzen Kieseln liegt im Halbkreis eingerahmt von Klippen in einer windarmen Bucht. Der Atlantik hat ca. 18° und ich setze mich zum Zeichnen der Ansicht Richtung Funchal ins Café. Ich teste nochmal Catarinas waterbrush. Als ich mit der Aquarellfarbe fast fertig bin, fängt es plötzlich an zu regnen (man sieht die Tröpfchen in der Vergrösserung - einfach anklicken). Ich flüchte unter das Dach des Cafés O Mero und male weiter. Die Seilbahn surrt ab und zu und die Wellen machen beruhigende, einschläfernde Geräusche. Ich brauch dringend noch einen Kaffee...
