15 - 20 min. Speed Portraits

 

What a granulation (!) in this first fast portrait, that I did in 15 min. with a flat 80mm brush and some remaining dark colour from the mixing space in my colour palette.  It helps staying loose and using a lot of water. The portrait below was done in the same way with a brown watercolour. Both are direct watercolours without preliminary pencil drawing.

That day I made a nice walk into my forest and collected colourful leaves.

Sure that I had to paint them later in direct watercolour. There was every colour from yellow to burnt siena and dark brown plus great reds and greens...love it.

This was a fun 10 min. sketch in direct watercolour, with no pencil drawing. Good exercise for colour value and fearless sketching with the watercolour brush.

Direct watercolours without preliminary pencil drawings are quite fun. Before we ate the pineapple for dessert, I had to sketch it just with watercolour. The actual sketchbook is now at an end, but I already ordered a new one.

Direkte Aquarelle, ohne Vorzeichnen machen grossen Spaß. Man muss sich etwas mehr konzentrieren, aber mit Übung geht das ganz gut. Bevor wir die Ananas als Nachtisch gegessen haben, musste ich sie malen. Somit ist mein aktuelles kleines Skizzenbuch mal wieder zuende, aber ein Neues steht schon bereit.

How privileged we are, that we can talk to our friends around the world and even sketch with them online! So cool. A few days ago, we had a fantastic portrait sketching party. No fotos needed as we sketched ourselves live from the monitor. 

My friends Antonella from Italy and Paula from Brazil were with me for an hour and we all did some leisure sketching, no hurry, no pressure, just sketch, learn and enjoy (It proved good to me that we spent about 20-25 min. for each sketch - everyone did two). We scheduled the sketching for the evening (CET) which was lunch time in Brazil.

My two portraits are done in direct watercolour because this is a fast direct technique and no preliminary drawing is needed which speeds my whole drawing process.

I felt so honoured to get two wonderful sketches they made of me after the session and sent them the ones I made of them.

We will do that sort of meeting soon again, as we all enjoyed it. Thank you my friends! Até a proxima.

Online Meeting mit Antonella aus Italien & Paula aus Brasilien. Toll, dass so etwas möglich ist. Wir hatten einen Riesen-Spass uns gegenseitig zu portraitieren. Kein Stress,...sich darauf einlassen. Meine Portraits sind nicht vorgezeichnet, sondern direkt mit dem Pinsel gemalt. Pro Portrait ca. 20-25 Minuten und natürlich witzige Gespräche dazu. Wir werden das bald wieder tun. Direct Watercolour Sketch - Autumn trees in my forest

 

 

Biking through the forest is great, even when it is a bit colder. The right clothing is important as well as to always carry some painting stuff in the backpack. Today again I stopped at another hunters place close to Großaltdorf and could watch the trees from my comfortable position from above. The great thing about these little seats is, that they are also covered, so if it is raining you are covered and sheltered. When I painted this direct watercolour (no preliminary pencil drawing) the weather was cold, but very good and the sunshine turned the colours of the leaves on the ground into a muted coloured, but still reddish and orange looking carpet.

I decided on site which colours to use with no plan beforehand, but as I continued drawing I thought that the mixtures turned out nicely and that I needed to note that down for further drawings.
 

The last photo shows my watercolour and the trees which I did from the wooden shelter I sat in.

Durch den Wald zu radeln ist klasse, vor allem sollte man da immer das Malzeug im Rucksack dabei haben. Kurz vor Großaltdorf machte ich an einem Hochstand stop. Hochstände sind sowieso sehr gute Orte zum malen und auch, wenn es zu regnen beginnt ist man da geschützt. An diesem Tag wollte ich die Bäume in direkter Aquarelltechnik malen - das geht schneller und macht Spass. Trotz des kühlen Wetters sahen die Blätter auf dem Waldboden wie ein rötlich-orangener Teppich auf. Die Farben sind zwar gedämpft, aber immer noch schön.

Die Farbmischungen habe ich mir erst vor Ort überlegt und dann ein Farbschema aufgemalt. Hier nebenstehend ist noch ein Vor-Ort-Bild im Hochstand.

Direct Watercolour Sketch in Paynes Grey

Training is important, so I try to train my hand-eye-coordination again. This direct watercolour sketch was done very fast from a photo. The colour I used in Paynes Grey, which I rarely use in my normal watercolours. It was fun to do that one although I have the impression that I often draw the pupils too big. Have to think about that next time. The teeth are just an indication which in my opinion is better than to draw them more accurately.

Übung ist so wichtig, daher versuche ich meine Hand-Augen-Koordination zu trainieren. Das tue ich mal wieder mit einer direkten Aquarellskizze, also direkt mit dem Pinsel, ohne Vorzeichnen. Die Farbe ist auch dieses Mal wieder Paynes Grey. Die Farbe nutze ich sonst fast nie, aber für diesen Zweck ist sie toll. Dasmuss auch nicht so genau sein, einfach flüssig malen. Die Pupillen mache ich leider immer etwas zu gross. Darauf muss ich beim nächsten Mal etwas besser achten. Die Zähne habe ich nur angedeutet, was meiner Meinung nach im Aquarell etwas lockerer aussieht, als sie detailliert zu malen.

A guy out of a tv journal. Direct watercolour sketch for training again. It is as simple as that, if you train your hand you can do better sketches...it is like in sports...although I was a bit handycapped while doing it...had a very thick hand like Picassos croissant hands...an insect stinged me into my sketch hand and it was quite swollen. Not good for somebody who likes to practice sketching every day.

Ein Mann aus einer TV Zeitschrift. Wieder eine direkte Aquarellskizze zum Training. Genau wie im Sport muss man die "Malmuskeln" trainieren. Wenn man die Hand trainiert, gehen die Skizzen sehr viel leichter von der Hand...heute war das allerdings nicht so einfach, denn ein seltsames Insekt hatte mich genau in meine Mal-Hand gestochen und die Hand ist angeschwollen...Mist. Sieht jetzt fast aus wie Picassos Croissant Hände...

Sketchtour Dinkelsbühl - direct watercolour portrait sketching

As always when urban sketching with friends we try to do fast portraits of each other. 

At Sketchtour Dinkelsbühl, while sitting in a restaurant we did some portrait sketching as well. So sorry that I just did three of them. Time is always too tight. The sketches are all done directly with watercolour brush (no preliminary pencil drawing)

My first one shows my sketcher friend Jana. Her eyes are green, but as the paper was still wet the brown colour ran into the green parts...this happens when sketching fast with no drying time. 

 Während wir im Restaurant zum Essen waren, machten wir ein paar Portraits. Meine sind in direkter Aquarelltechnik, also ohne Vorzeichnen (das geht schneller). Ich hätte gern mehr gemacht, aber hab insgesamt nur drei Stück schnell hingekritzelt. Die Zeit ist immer zu knapp.

Das erste Portrait zeigt meine Mal-Freundin Jana. Ihre Augen sind in echt grün, aber da die Farbe noch nicht trocken war ist mir der Braunton leider reingelaufen...das passiert, wenn man nicht wartet, bis es trocken ist und man schnell zum Ende kommen möchte.


Next was Jan. I catched him from the side and found it very difficult to get the head right. Here is my result. I should try it again next time we meet.

 Als nächstes war Jan dran. Ich versuchte ihn von der Seite zu malen und fand es sehr schwierig die Kopfform richtig hinzubekommen. Hier ist mein Ergebnis. Nächstes Mal, wenn wir uns treffen will ich es nochmal versuchen.

The next day Isaac was my model. I believe I have to redo that one too, because I did it too fast without thinking and am not too happy with the result. 
I show it anyway. Maybe I should use a finer brush; more thinking and a bit more time for that too.

Am nächsten Tag war Isaac mein Modell. Ich glaube das muss ich definitiv nochmal probieren, denn ich hab wenig nachgedacht und nur mal schnell etwas gekritzelt. Ich zeige es dennoch. Evtl. sollte ich für Isaacs feines Gesicht auch einen etwas feineren Pinsel und etwas mehr Konzentration sowie Zeit aufwenden.

Yesterday evening I tried again a fast direct watercolour sketch in order to keep the brush moving and test my abilities to sketch people. It is good to train the hand and eye. I try to do this every once in a while as a training which could eventually be done while watching TV.

Gestern Abend hab ich mal wieder eine schnelle, direkte Aquarellskizze (ohne Vorzeichnen) gemacht, damit der Pinsel nicht stillsteht und ich meine Hand-Augen-Koordination weiter trainieren kann. Ab und zu eine gute Übung z.B. beim Fernsehen.

As mentioned a few times in earlier posts, this year again I did not really participate in the #30x30directwatercolour - challenge (unlike in June 2018), as I did not have the time (sigh), but every once in a while I doodle in direct watercolour and see what happens. This drawing is done with only three primaries. Double challenge. Real fun.

Wie bereits ein paar mal in anderen Posts erwähnt, habe ich im Juni die #30x30directwatercolour challenge leider nicht mitmachen können (anders als im Jahr 2018). Dieses Jahr hat es zeitlich leider wieder nicht geklappt, aber immer mal wieder fordere ich mich selbst heraus und mache ein direktes Aquarell ohne Vorzeichnung. Bei diesem Bild habe ich mich auf 3 Farben beschränkt. Das ist doppelter Spaß.

Yes I know I am late for the #30x30directwatercolours . Tried to paint Eva directly with the brush with a reduced number of colours from a photo. She sits on the arm of her grandfather. It was just some kind of doodle, but turned out better than expected for such a fast drawing.

Ja, ich weiss ich bin spät dran mit meinem direkten Aquarell für die #30x30directwatercolour . Mit nur wenigen Farben und direkt mit dem Pinsel - ohne Vorzeichnung) habe ich versucht Eva auf dem Arm ihres Großvaters zu malen. Eigentlich habe ich nur so vor mich hingedoodelt, aber ich finde es ist ganz ordentlich geworden für ein schnelles direktes Aquarell. 

Heinrich the Potter

Heinrich the Potter is the person who was very important to our little Thursday Sketchgroup on my "everything-is-possible-thursday" some time ago. 

I visited him a week before our sketchmeet at his place and he said he liked portrait painting and being portrayed much more than just taking photographs of him and the pottery. (Btw this is where I bought the beautiful pitcher I talked about a few days ago.)

We brought cake and coffee and first he showed us the place where he himself painted his ceramics with floral decors. He sat at the table and worked and told us stories about his life, the pottery and the pilgrims that come by here a lot. So we talked and painted...

I ended the upper picture and needed a small recreation with coffee and cake and the model and my painting friend joined. While sitting at the table I did a direct watercolour portrait of Heinrich, which is without preliminary pencil drawing. This was a bit more tricky, but all in all I am ok with the result. There is more likeness visible in the upper watercolour.

Heinrich der Töpfer ist die wichtigste Person für unsere kleine Donnerstags-Malgruppe an meinem "alles-ist-möglich-Donnerstag" vor einigen Tagen.

Eine Woche zuvor hatte ich ihn besucht und er war erfreut, dass wir ihn portraitieren wollten, denn Malen gefällt ihm sowieso besser, als fotografieren, sagte er. (Hier habe ich übrigens den Topf gekauft, den ich kürzlich gepostet habe.)

Wir brachten Kaffee und Kuchen mit und zuerst zeigte uns Heinrich seinen Arbeitsplatz, an dem er seine Töpferwaren mit floralen Motiven bemalte. Er saß an seinem Tisch und während er arbeitete erzählte er uns Geschichten aus seinem Leben, der Töpferei und den Pilgern, die hier oft vorbeikommen. Wir malten und redeten... 

Mein oberes Aquarell war dann irgendwann fertig und ich freute mich auf den Kaffee. Die Anderen gesellten sich zu mir und wir aßen erstmal. 
 
Dann fing ich ein direktes Aquarell Portrait von Heinrich an, das direkt mit dem Pinsel gemacht wird, ohne Vorzeichnen. Es war etwas mehr Konzentration nötig, als beim anderen Bild, aber ich bin ganz zufrieden mit dem Ergebnis. Die Ähnlichkeit ist aber im oberen Bild eher gegeben.

Um dies zu prüfen, besucht ihn einfach in seiner Töpferwerkstatt in der Mitte von Gründelhardt und kauft einige seiner schönen Keramiken.

#2020PragueSketchFest - Johanna, oder so

My sketching friend Johanna was the one who informed me in the first place about the event and after having had two days of great sketching with USk Prage, that evening, we met for more private dinner at a nice restaurant in the old part of Prague. I sketched her before the meal came. This one was super fast and super fun. It is a direct watercolour.

Meine Malfreundin Johanna, war diejenige, die mich ursprünglich auf das Sketchfest aufmerksam gemacht hatte und nachdem wir nun zwei super Tage mit USk Prag verbracht hatten, trafen wir uns zu einem eher privaten Abendessen in einem netten Restaurant in der Altstadt von Prag. Bevor das Essen kam, musste ich sie auf jeden Fall noch malen. Das ging super schnell und machte Spaß. Es handelt sich um ein direktes Aquarell.

And again I tried to do as many direct watercolour portraits as possible some during day and some without a lot of light (weird conditions...in the evening). 

The first one is Elins, but without her glasses. Now I see that the ear is too high...happens if you don't look right...

The one of Hélio (below) I did already in Amsterdam but only in Augsburg I had the opportunity to photograph him with the portrait that was still in the same sketchbook.

Those direct watercolour faces are always a risk as you cannot correct or erase anything so either "hopp or top"

You just have to try and if there is just a bit of likeness it is already a great success.

Und wieder versuchte ich so viele Freunde, wie möglich im direkten Aquarell (ohne Vorzeichnen zu portraitieren). Manchmal tagsüber, manchmal in der Dunkelheit (schlechte Voraussetzungen, wenn man die Farbtöne nicht mehr erkennt...)

Das Erste ist das von Elin, ohne Brille. Nun sehe ich, dass ich das Ohr zu hoch angesetzt habe...das passiert, wenn man nicht gut genug hinschaut.





Das Portrait von Hélio habe ich bereits in Amsterdam gemacht, aber vergessen ein Foto mit ihm zu machen, damit man sieht ob es eine Ähnlichkeit aufweist. Jetzt hatte ich die Gelegenheit, das nachzuholen. 

Die direkten Aquarell-Portraits sind immer ein wenig riskant, denn es kann "hopp oder top" dabei rauskommen.

Man muss sich nur trauen und wenn eine gewisse Ähnlichkeit da ist, dann ist das schon ein Erfolg.
