Girl (still unfinished)

Yes this still is yesterdays unfinished. Today I did the clothing and lets see if I can finish it tomorrow...

Girl (unfinished)

It is cold outside. The best thing to is to heat up the studio and draw, having a good cup of coffee beside me. I looked through my summer fotos and would like to continue with my portraits of people I encountered lately. For larger watercolours I take my time, but my time window is quite short so I do that step by step (it needs to dry anyhow). I first did the face and will continue with the clothing tomorrow.

Canadian Hike (unfinished)

We have snow this morning!

Lovely E. sent me the original picture of the scene and I began the watercolour above. She lives in Canada right now. I am happy to have a sign of life every once in a while. Thanks to smart phones the world is becoming smaller. In this watercolour I began with the face, but did not have the time to do more. We will see how it develops.

Forest in November

Yes, I know it is already December, but this one is a November forest with red and yellow leaves everywhere. Now you see the stems of the trees much better and if you want to know the structures of the trees for painting or drawing it is the right time to go and make forest research for that reason. I very much like the season as it is still colourful before the hard winter hits us.

In between enjoying home and looking through and scanning my Augsburg drawings (to come...) I have done a larger watercolour. I did this one after a visit to Schwäbisch Hall. It was very sunny and beautiful to stroll through the city.

Topinambour

Let's cherish the beautiful garden view. This is what I thought as I painted the Anemone and the yellow Topinambour. The plants are like a jungle at my place and I wanted to show a part of this to you. In one weeks time I will be away at the Urban Sketchers Germany Annual Meeting and will do some workshops and write about it later. I am so looking forward to seeing my friends again and to be able to draw and paint from dusk till dawn.

USk Symposium Amsterdam 2019 - Drawing no. 4 of 5

You might already know this sight, but this is my drawing number 4 of 5 (Workshop drawing). During the workshop I did not watercolour it. Later I did. This one is done a bit differently as I used a cretacolor pencil in the black parts of the initial drawing before watercolouring. If you look at it closer you can see the super spreading / washed-out and granulating effects mainly in the light blue parts which are only possible in watercolour technique (btw...it was a Sennelier light blue).

In der Nähe des Biberdamms II

I finished the "pond besides the beavers nest" watercolour. Needed some time for that one. And seriously I don't have too much time for drawing at the moment. See the beginning of it below...

Yesterday evening I did not get far with my watercolour of the pond besides the beavers nest.

I drive by here quite often with my bike and everytime I am here I think about drawing the water and the reflections. I was so tired yesterday evening that I just began with the Background and did some negative painting around the trees. BTW this is a direct watercolour. I spared out the stems of the trees (negative painting) and began with the background and as shown below with the water. That is all I have for today. Let's see if I continue in the next few days or not.

Winterwald

Had a long needed, quiet evening looking through the photos I did in the forest and found one with the middle tree covered with ivy which makes for a bit of green in the winter forest. The water puddles on the forest track reflect their surroundings. This was a very fun direct watercolour. I directly jumped into the colour without pencil lines. I was in the flow.

Tulpen

Watercolour class is on again and our first painting was a tulip bouquet seen from above. I did it twice on one sheet. Happy Weekend everybody.

Happy Weekend.

Memory of Madeira - Boats and Water

BLUE BLUE BLUE

Still testing the same watercolours. Today I am looking at the blue colours. The blues are very bright and nice. The Cerulean ist a bit lighter than the Schmincke one (which is the one I usually use.) and in mixes it has a whitening manner - sort of milky but the pure colour looks almost like Manganese.
Above all the ultramarine is great.

I had to let dry about three times in between. It is worth for the brightness of the colours. Some minor granulation in all of the blues I used and the watercolour can do its magic.

BLAU BLAU BLAU

Test: Blues

Winter Morning

Another working day before Christmas and like everybody I think over what still to buy and not forget for the long week-end ahead. Hopefully there will also be calm times for sketching and planning new travel adventures...

Provence Houses

Watercolour class is finished now for the year of 2018 and this is one of my last paintings I did there.

It is a Provence Landscape in the Luberon Region with yellow ocre buildings and walls with the typical light blue shutters on the windows.

The colour which I used in the beginning was quin. gold straigth out of the tube. Then I did the cerulean sky. Afterwards the shadows with ultramarine and the darkest darks of green and blue for the windows and trees.

In watercolour class I was actually in the flow with this drawing. Drawing or painting water is one of my favourites. I began with the yellowish leaves of the trees, then did the sky and in the end the darker parts. Had some leftover on my palette of bloodstone genuine DS and used it for the very dark parts in the background and the dark stones in the foreground. This colour spreads wonderfully into others.

Herbstfarben in Roßfeld

Let's continue with the autumn colours in watercolour technique. This view is a bit closer to the city and there is an Allee of very big old trees beside the street. I was not sure what colour to use for the stems of the trees as they were very dark compared to the colourful surrounding plants. In the lower parts of the trees I used bloodstone genuine DS (very dark and juicy if used out of the tube) and after drying I put some umber and a dap of red on top to have the stems in lighter colour up to the top.

In the month of November in my opinion it is the best time of the year to draw trees around Central Europe because of: 1. the beautiful colours (if sunny), 2. the structures (lesser foliage), 3. sharp contrasts of November light.

Blaue Tasse

Watercolour class: I brought a small fine bone china cup and a few things from the garden to do another still life. Just a rough sketch with the pen and then jumped into the colours. Below are my models on a foto...
