Winter Morning

Another working day before Christmas and like everybody I think over what still to buy and not forget for the long week-end ahead. Hopefully there will also be calm times for sketching and planning new travel adventures...

Second Snow

It looks like in the mountains, but it is a landscape close to where I live. It was the second time that it snowed a bit and if the weather is sunny it makes for nice blue shadows on the snowy landscape.

Today I experimented with a photo I made in summer (lots of greens) and transferred it into autumn colours. This is how I proceeded: My first step was to search for typical warm fall colours such as quin. gold, orange,   naples yellow, dark green and different  warm browns for the background and I thought to do the rather shady trees with colder colours like greyish blues in the foreground.

This time a bit of preliminary planning was needed. All in all I did not mix too much so the colours stay vibrant.

Tip: If you are not sure where the darkest darks and the mid-tones are, change your coloured photo into black and white. This can help you with the values.

Memory of Pizzo - Promenade

It was a cloudy day when we came here. My focus was actually on the clouds and I used thick cerulean colour to make it more vibrant.

Memory of Tropea - The Gate

Tropea: This is the gate to go to the beach. After a rainshower, the surrounding colours where very bright and darker than usual. I did the watercolour with the help of a photo, this is probably why I painted it even darker than if I drew it on site. Here I could plunge into all of my greens. I mostly use them ready made as it is quicker than mixing big puddles from yellow and blue.

Again the watertower of Crailsheim, but this time with only three colours. This is how I began: Wet the Paper and let flow and mix on the paper the following pure colours: Ultramarin, Alizarin Crimson, Yellow Ocre, and let dry thoroughly. In a second step I did the details with mixes of those three colours. That's it.

Vitamine 2

Again some fruit just for the fun of it. My second fruit still life made from real fruit on the table without prior pencil lines. This time on a 300 g paper. A few days ago I tried it on 450 g. For me it is no extremely significant difference. The papers are both good.

Pfingstrose

Paper test: Info to all watercolour nerds and above all to Hélio: Yes, this is the paper you gave me last month and I finally tried it out.

It is a Canson, Moulin du Roy 100% cotton,  300 g, grain satin watercolour paper.

I enjoyed painting on it. It can take a lot of water and easily many layers of washes as you can see on the edge of my drawing. The surface is extremely smooth and flat compared to the rough paper I usually use and as a consequence brushstrokes can be made very precisely and easy without interruption. I tried very dark watercolour and the paper takes it too without swallowing too much of the brightness of the colour.
Thank you for having given me the opportunity to test it.

BTW: This Peonie in front of the hedge in the garden is one of my favourite as she smells beautifully.
