Memory of Dinkelsbühl - Westside

 

Found a pencil sketch, which I begun during Sketchtour Dinkelsbühl in summer and never finished. This is the time to do it, as it is unpleasantly cold outside at the moment. So I coloured it according to some photos I took in the area.

Eine angefangene Bleistiftskizze von dieser Ecke in Dinkelsbühl hatte ich im Sommer anlässlich der Sketchtour Dinkelsbühl gemacht und nie zuende gemalt. Jetzt hab ich Zeit das zu tun. Es ist ja ungemütlich kalt momentan und ich kann die Skizze im Studio mit Hilfe meiner Fotos vom Sommer beenden.

Sketchtour Dinkelsbühl - My final thoughts on the sketchtour

My thoughts on the sketchtour are the following

I reached most of my personal goals and am happy that everything went well.
- nightsketches - check,  
- towers - check (I did not do every tower but aaaalot of them)
- portraits - check (just three direct watercolour portraits)
- peoples and cars (one statue and some indications of people in my sketches 
   ...here I could get better next time)

For my private wishes I could say I had so much fun with my sketching friends,  we shared our drawings (...even exchanged our art) and had lots of art talk.

The food was excellent and as always I ate too much. Everybody was in good health and mood so I think we all had an overall positive experience. 

I was extremely inspired by my friends art and already ordered new art stuff for trying it out. The term of "preparation" was very important and a few of us prepared their papers the evening before for having special "grounds" for their next days art. Sketching and preparing non-stop...this is something we have in common...the hunger for more sketching...this is pure dedication and a bit of obsession.

What a cool event it was and if you ask me what is next, I would say I intend to plan another tour in a different city of my home area for the coming year. I will let you know as soon as I figured that out.

Sketchtour Dinkelsbühl - good moments - great challenges

The sketchtour was a blast! I enjoyed every moment. 

The best of the best moments and decisions for me personally were the following:

- Meeting my sketching friends again
- Throwing colour everywhere around and staying on site at a hotel so not 
  having the distractions from daily commitments at home and get totally 
  involved into painting was a good decision.
- Having fun, humorous moments and good food
- Getting into the flow
- Sketching nearly nonstop
- Doing nightsketches every evening
- Having good memories on paper and in the mind
- Seeing new techniques
- Learning about "preparation"


 ***
Whereas the challenges were:

- sketching people (I admit, I neglected this a bit)
- sketching at night with no or lesser light!
- dealing with the weather on one morning, which turned out well in the end
- fighting against being tired which was better in Dinkelsbühl than on other USk 
  events as we had only few real committments per day, everything was very 
  close and we could plan to our wishes
- at first I feared that keeping the distance to everybody according to the local 
  rules would be difficult, but it turned out being easier than expected.


After one sketchtour is before another sketchtour...I am already planning a new one and Jan said, he will do so as well. We keep you posted on our plans as soon as we figured out where and how.... 


Die Sketchtour war klasse. Was mir am Besten gefallen hat war, dass ich meine Freunde wieder getroffen habe und Spaß beim Malen hatte. Das Nachtsketchen war besonders toll.

Was für mich die grössten Herausforderungen waren: Personen in die Bilder einzubauen, Nachtsketchen ohne, oder mit wenig Licht, die Distanz zu Personen zu wahren (obwohl das besser ging, als ich es erwartet hatte) und einmal bei schlechtem Wetter zu malen, was sich dann aber auch als völlig unproblematisch herausstellte.

Nach der einen Sketchtour ist vor der anderen Sketchtour...Ich bin schon wieder am Planen und Jan sagte, er wolle auch eine Tour planen. Sobald ich genaueres weiss, werde ich berichten...

Sketchtour Dinkelsbühl - Early Morning Sketch and Segringer Tor at daylight

Our last morning began with the early morning sketch. We went to a place where I saw the metal sign of a white horse at Steingasse. 
I set the timer at the agreed 1 hour and Jan sat down right under the tree in front to sketch the square onto his extremely large formal, like two times A2. He was really in the "flow" while I was still like in a dizzy condition as I did not have my first morning coffee so far...

As soon as the timer said it is time to finish I went back to the hotel for bringing my stuff back and meeting for breakfast. 

Jan stayed a bit longer and came a few instants later with his wonderful piece of art: HERE on FB 
 
Later after Breakfast our friends exchanged a few paintings - great memory... 

PS: Made the upper sketch of Segringer Tor earlier and coloured later at home as I did not have the time to finish...


Unser letzter gemeinsamer Morgen begann mit dem "Früh-Sketch". Wir wanderten zu einem Platz in der Nähe vom "weissen Roß" und ich setze den Timer auf  eine Stunde. 

Jan begann sofort, denn die Zeit ist knapp. Er verwendete ein extrem grosses Format (2 x A2 quer). Er war im "flow", während mir der Kaffee fehlte und ich mehr schlecht als recht ein Aquarell vom Metallschild des Weißen Rosses machte. Hier mein Vor-Ort Foto.

Später, nach dem ausgiebigen Frühstück wurden dann noch Bilder getauscht, signiert und gestempelt. Ein tolles Andenken.

PS: Die obere Skizze vom Segringer Tor hatte ich bereits am Anfang gemacht, aber aus Zeitgründen erst Zuhause aquarelliert... 

Sketchtour Dinkelsbühl - Nightsketching III

Our third nightsketching was also close to the church. We chose this place for the good lighting and the hustle and bustle on this Saturday evening. Isaac sat on the steps of the main church entrance while I did the view to the protestant church in Dinkelsbühl. We had many spectators that evening and one even said that we should put up a hat.  I used heavily granulating colours for the sky and was happy that there were such nice round lights on the flooring in front of me that would make a good pattern in my watercolour sketch.

We finished at around 11 pm and as soon as we packed our stuff, the lights went off. Really funny...there might be somebody watching us finish...;) With a great laughter we went back to the hotel. 


Jan suggested an "early-morning-sketch" tomorrow at 7 am...huh, I think it will only be the two of us..."who else is as crazy as that"!


Für unser drittes Nightsketching waren wir in der Nähe von St. Georg. Wir wählten diesen Platz, weil er sehr hell ist und an diesem Samstag Abend noch etwas los war. Isaac saß auf den Treppen des Kirchenportals, während ich etwas seitlich mit Blick auf die ev. Kirche saß. Wir hatten während unserer Zeit dort sehr viele Zuschauer und einer sagte, wir könnten doch einen Hut hinlegen.

Für mein Bild verwendete ich sehr dunkle, stark granulierende Farben im Himmel. Die runden, im Boden eingelassenen Lichter machten schöne Muster auf mein Bild.

Um fast 23 Uhr packten wir dann unsere Sachen zusammen. Sobald wir uns vom Platz entfernten ging das Licht aus. Wir schauten uns an und lachten, denn es kam uns so vor, als hätte uns jemand beobachtet und dann das Licht ausgeschaltet... gut gelaunt gingen wir zurück ins Hotel. 

Für morgen früh hatte Jan zum "Frühsketchen" aufgerufen und ich befürchte, dass um 7 Uhr nur wir beide erscheinen werden..."wer ist sonst noch so verrückt?!"

 

Sketchtour Dinkelsbühl - Fast sketch and ice cream

We are besides the church, some of us having ice cream and we do some more sketching as the weather is perfect and we still have a short timespan till we go out for dinner. 

It is our last full day together and tonight we agreed on more "nightsketching" for this is so much fun. 

My upper drawing is done with watercolour on watersoluble ink pen and remains somehow unfinished.

Wir befinden uns in der Nähe der Kirche. Einige von uns sind beim Eisessen und Sketchen. Wir haben nur noch Zeit für eine kurze Skizze, denn es wird langsam Zeit etwas Richtiges zu essen. Nach dem Abendessen wollen wir tatsächlich  noch ein drittes Mal "nightsketchen", weil es einfach so toll ist.

Mein oberes Bild ist in Aquarell auf wasserlöslichen Tintenstift gemalt und das Bild bleibt irgendwie unvollendet. 

 

Sketchtour Dinkelsbühl - Panorama Sketch

Another highlight after the strong rainfall in the morning of Saturday was the place I scouted for panorama sketching. It was probably the highest point, from where we had a good view onto the city. 

In the beginning it was very quiet and we spread our painting stuff on this little plateau.

Jana was sitting behind us and painted a scenic sketch of houses and a few of us in front of her into her sketchbook. See here on FB

My own sketch was done with preliminary pencil drawing and watercolour. The sky was still dramatic from the mornings rainfall.

I was keen to catch the atmosphere as this is one important way for me to tell the story of what we experienced that day.

Nach den starken Regenfällen am Morgen des Samstags, waren wir nun auf dem Weg zu einem weiteren Highlight der Tour und zwar dem Panorama-Sketchen. Dafür habe ich den höchsten Punkt der Stadt ausgewählt (es gibt aber auch noch andere Möglichkeiten hier). Ein kleines Plateau, von dem aus man eine gute Sicht runter auf die Stadt hat. 

Jan hatte sogar seine Staffelei dabei und machte gekonnt seine Skizze. 

Jana saß hinter der Gruppe und fügte einige von uns in ihre Stadtskizze ein. 

Mein Bild hatte ich mit Bleistift vorgezeichnet und später mit Aquarellfarbe gemalt. Wichtig war mir dabei die Stimmung am Himmel einzufangen (denn es hatte ja so stark geregnet und die Wolken waren noch immer da). 

Toll war das!

Sketchtour Dinkelsbühl - direct watercolour portrait sketching

As always when urban sketching with friends we try to do fast portraits of each other. 

At Sketchtour Dinkelsbühl, while sitting in a restaurant we did some portrait sketching as well. So sorry that I just did three of them. Time is always too tight. The sketches are all done directly with watercolour brush (no preliminary pencil drawing)

My first one shows my sketcher friend Jana. Her eyes are green, but as the paper was still wet the brown colour ran into the green parts...this happens when sketching fast with no drying time. 

 Während wir im Restaurant zum Essen waren, machten wir ein paar Portraits. Meine sind in direkter Aquarelltechnik, also ohne Vorzeichnen (das geht schneller). Ich hätte gern mehr gemacht, aber hab insgesamt nur drei Stück schnell hingekritzelt. Die Zeit ist immer zu knapp.

Das erste Portrait zeigt meine Mal-Freundin Jana. Ihre Augen sind in echt grün, aber da die Farbe noch nicht trocken war ist mir der Braunton leider reingelaufen...das passiert, wenn man nicht wartet, bis es trocken ist und man schnell zum Ende kommen möchte.


Next was Jan. I catched him from the side and found it very difficult to get the head right. Here is my result. I should try it again next time we meet.

 Als nächstes war Jan dran. Ich versuchte ihn von der Seite zu malen und fand es sehr schwierig die Kopfform richtig hinzubekommen. Hier ist mein Ergebnis. Nächstes Mal, wenn wir uns treffen will ich es nochmal versuchen.

The next day Isaac was my model. I believe I have to redo that one too, because I did it too fast without thinking and am not too happy with the result. 
I show it anyway. Maybe I should use a finer brush; more thinking and a bit more time for that too.

Am nächsten Tag war Isaac mein Modell. Ich glaube das muss ich definitiv nochmal probieren, denn ich hab wenig nachgedacht und nur mal schnell etwas gekritzelt. Ich zeige es dennoch. Evtl. sollte ich für Isaacs feines Gesicht auch einen etwas feineren Pinsel und etwas mehr Konzentration sowie Zeit aufwenden.

 

Sketchtour Dinkelsbühl - Thunderstorm and Market Sketch

The weather forecast was right and we had a heavy thunderstorm early in the morning and the rain continued while we had breakfast.

Some of our group stayed at the hotel to window sketch. Jan and I in contrary decided to leave in the rain and find some shelter under a roof or in a church. 

As we passed the little market in the centre right in front of the cathedral, we decided to sit down under one of the large umbrellas of a café closeby and start our first sketch of the day. Isaac joined in a few minutes later and we had much fun with the ladies from the market stalls who seemed to like to be drawn by us. They even told their customers to have a look at our drawings and were proud that they were included into our sketches. We did not expect so much response.

The thunderstorm continued and some splashes of water reached us while we threw colour onto our paintings. Drying time was unusually long for all the humidity around us. Difficult conditions, but awesome experience.

Around midday the weather became beautifully sunny and we headed to the spot we initially wanted to go early in the morning, which is a panoramic view of Dinkelsbühl.

Die Wetterfee hatte recht, es sollte Gewitter geben und sehr viel Regen an diesem Morgen, an dem wir eigentlich eine grosse Panoramaskizze machen wollten. Einige blieben nach dem Frühstück im Hotel, um ein paar Fensterskizzen zu machen und Jan und ich waren überzeugt, dass sich ein Platz in der regnerischen Welt da draussen finden ließe und gingen einfach los. Wir dachten es gäbe schon irgendeinen Platz unter einem Dach, oder in einer Kirche, um ein paar Skizzen machen zu können. 

Stattdessen fanden wir einen kleinen Markt in der Stadtmitte und setzten uns unter einen grossen Schirm im Café daneben. Nach wenigen Minuten gesellte sich auch Isaac dazu und wir malten die Stadt, den Marktstand und die Damen, die dort ihre Arbeit verrichteten. Diese waren ganz angetan, dass wir sie malten und kamen immer wieder herüber, um unsere Fortschritte zu sehen. Sie erzählten stolz ihren Kunden davon, die dann auch zum spicken kamen. So viel positive "Response" hätten wir gar nicht erwartet. Das Gewitter wütete noch immer und gegen Mittag wurde das Wetter wieder richtig gut.

Auf zum Panorama-Blick...aber das ist einen extra Post wert... 

Sketchtour Dinkelsbühl - Nightsketching II at Wörnitztor

After that lovely dinner outside in a closeby beergarden with Isaac joining us we surrounded Wörnitzgate for our nightsketching. Johanna sat beside me and the others went inside the city walls to do the gate or some city views from the inside.

This time I was well prepared and I believe this shows in the bright watercolour of the tower with very light and very dark areas. Johanna did also very good work.  She did preparation work of her sheets in advance. The evening before, she sent me the photo of her window sill at the hotel room. 

You see we crazy artist still work late to achieve the results we want.

Isaac also did a beautiful nightsketch, sitting on the stairs directly at Wörnitz gate with a view direction city centre, but I could not find his sketch on social media yet.

Then it was time to have a little bit of sleep after a long, creative sketching day. 
Tomorrow we will continue...

Nach dem Abendessen versammelten wir uns rund ums Wörnitztor, um unsere Nightsketches zu machen. Johanna und ich blieben ausserhalb der Stadtmauer und die Andern tigerten nach drinnen. 

Am Abend zuvor hatte mir Johanna ein Foto ihrer "preparation", also ihrer Vorbereitung per whatsapp geschickt. Sie hatte auf dem Fensterbrett ihres Hotelzimmer einige erste Farbaufträge für den nächsten Tag gemacht. Sehr interessante Methode.

Von Isaac, der innerhalb der Stadtmauer, auf einer Treppe sitzend malte habe ich leider kein Foto und bisher auch kein Bild auf social media von seinem Nachtsketch gefunden, aber Jan z.B. hat sein Bild bereits auf FB gepostet: HIER
Tolles Bild voller Energie. 

Nun war es aber Zeit nach so einem langen, kreativen Maltag schlafen zu gehen...morgen ist auch noch ein Tag.... 

Sketchtour Dinkelsbühl - Am Spital

While the others drew somewhere in the centre, Jan and I did a tour of the north-eastside of town. We stopped at Spital, which is a wide square surrounded by a wall on the one side and different beautiful buildings on the other sides. 

I sat under a tree to do this fast ink drawing. The two little towers were neat so they had to be included into my drawing. For my tower collection... My ink pen is a watersoluble one which creates nice effects when it is touched by water.

I did not draw Jan into the sketch although he was right in front...and we wanted to be ready fast for continuing our tour through the city.

Während die Anderen irgendwo im Zentrum unterwegs waren, machten Jan und ich einen Erkundungsgang durch die Nord-Ost Seite der Stadt.
Wir wollten noch eine schnelle Skizze machen, bevor es zurück zu den Anderen ging und hielten am Spital. Da gab es einen grossen Platz mit Bäumen, der von einer Mauer an der einen Seite und von verschiedenen Gebäuden eingerahmt wurde. Die beiden Türmchen fand ich recht cool. Da ich ja viele Türme malen wollte, sind diese jetzt auch bei der Sammlung dabei.

Der Platz unter einem Baum war gut bei der grossen Hitze. Mein Tuschestift ist nicht wasserfest, was ganz schöne Effekte in die Zeichnung bringt, sobald man die Aquarellfarbe aufbringt.

Jan malte im Stehen direkt rechts vor mir....ich hab ihn leider nicht mitreingezeichnet.

Wir wollten nun sehr schnell zum Ende kommen, damit wir unsere Tour durch die Stadt fortsetzen konnten.

Meine Gebäude sind etwas schief...ich schieb es mal auf die Hitze...

Sketchtour Dinkelsbühl - Friday Morning sketch at Hahnengässlein

Now that was a quiet morning spot after a very luxurious breakfast.  I sat on some steps and moved lower and lower as the hot sun came over the roofs. I asked myself, how could the day become even better - it is already perfect. 

Jan joined me and we went to another spot...

Das war vielleicht ein wunderbar ruhiger Malplatz für den Vormittag. Ich saß im Schatten auf der Treppe, musste aber immer weiter runterrutschen, denn die Sonne kam bereits über die Hausgiebel. Ich dachte bei mir...der Tag könnte nicht schöner beginnen - alles war perfekt.

Jan holte mich ab. Auf zum nächsten schönen Platz... 

Sketchtour Dinkelsbühl - Sketchting is like meditation

There were a few moments in Dinkelsbühl which were like meditation. I would call this meditative state the "flow". You forget everything around you and dive into your painting. This is mainly if I very much like a subject and feel comfortable at my sketching place. So every piece puts itself together somehow.

Here I had fun with an indigo Derwent pencil I still got from the Amsterdam goodie bag and this pen ist not watercolourable. Just indicated the background in order not to compete with the foreground.

In Dinkelsbühl gab es mehrere Momente, die sich wie Meditation anfühlten. Ich würde diesen meditativen Zustand als eine Art "Flow" bezeichnet. Man vergisst alles um sich herum und taucht in sein Bild förmlich ein. Meist passiert das, wenn man das Malobjekt sehr gut findet, oder einen komfortablen Platz zum Malen ergattert hat. Dann fügt sich alles wie von selbst zusammen.

Hier hatte ich Spaß mit einem indigofarbenen Derwent Buntstift, den ich aus der Amsterdam Goodie Bag mitgebracht habe. Der Stift ist nicht mit Wasser anlösbar. Den Hintergrund habe ich nur angedeutet, damit er nicht mit den Figuren im Vordergrund konkurriert.

Sketchtour Dinkelsbühl - Nightsketching at Segringer Tor

Our nightsketching event on Thursday evening after sundown was at Segringer Tor. I forgot to bring my headlamp which I left in the hotel room. That was my main mistake that evening, because from the place I sat I could barely see anything on my paper and as it was getting darker I had to rely on my knowledge of the colours in my palette and not on eyesight. Therefore I kept everything very simple. 

I was sure that for the next nightsketching on the following day I would pack my headlight as well as my fancy dark colours like lunar blue DS etc - and Johanna brought me a vanilla coloured pencil of Caran d'Ache which I would like to test as well. 

Our day was quite packed and we were all very tired. Good night.

Unser Nachtsketching Event am Donnerstag Abend nach Sonnenuntergang war am Segringer Tor. Ich vergaß leider meine Kopflampe aus dem Hotel mitzunehmen. Das war ein grosser Fehler, denn an dem Platz an dem ich zum sketchen saß konnte ich kaum den Pinsel auf dem Papier sehen und als es dunkler wurde musste ich mich auf das Wissen, in welchem Farbtopf welche Farbe auf meiner Palette war, verlassen. Daher hielt ich die Skizze auch sehr einfach. Unter diesen Umständen war einfach nicht mehr drin.

Für den nächsten Tag würde ich mir mein Kopflicht einpacken, genauso wie die Tuben mit dunklen Farben, die ich extra fürs Nachtsketchen ausgewählt hatte. Johanna hat mir einen vanillefarbenen Stift von Caran D'Ache mitgebracht, den man evtl. für Highlights einsetzen kann und den werde ich sicher zum Ausprobieren auch mitnehmen. 

Wir haben die Zeit zum Malen perfekt genutzt und waren dann auch extrem müde. Gute Nacht.

Sketchtour Dinkelsbühl - Dinner Sketch

On our first evening together we sat in this fancy restaurant with beer garden and had dinner. I did a more or less direct watercolour. Just a fast one in between ordering and getting our meal. The wooden roof construction with glass elements was very interesting to sketch. I could not sketch my meal as I was too hungry.

Jana invented the perfect social distancing tool, made of bathroom paper.

An unserem ersten Abend zusammen, waren wir in einem "fancy" Restaurant mit Biergarten. Dort habe ich ein eher lockeres direktes Aquarell gemalt, denn das Dach aus Holz mit Glaselementen interessierte mich. Das war eine recht schnelle Skizze zwischen Bestellung und Erhalt des Essens. Mein Essen wollte ich nicht malen, denn dazu war ich zu hungrig.

Jana hatte in der Zwischenzeit eine neue Mund-Nasen-Bedeckung erfunden (siehe Foto. Dort sieht man auch die eher komplizierte Decke)

Sketchtour Dinkelsbühl - Towers...Segringer Tor and tiny streets

Let's start with my first large A3 sketch after our hotel check-in in Dinkelsbühl on that Thursday. Hot weather was forecasted for the day and the next as well. Johanna (Urban Sketcher from Hannover) and I sat in the shade and drew the view to Segringer Tor from the south-west side of town. 

Johanna was spreading her pencils all over the street and we had a lot of laughter like when a few cars came by and drove around her art stuff... 

Passers-by were very nice and always had sympathetic comments. What a friendly welcome in this scenic town.

At 5 pm we all went to the meeting point to gather for discussing how to proceed in the evening. We still had enough time for dinner and - one of my personal highlights - "nightsketching" was on our schedule...

Um mal von vorne anzufangen...kommt hier meine erste grosse A3 Skizze, die ich in Gesellschaft meiner Sketcher-Freundin Johanna aus Hannover gemacht habe. Es war ein sehr sonniger Nachmittag und wie man auf dem Bild sehen kann waren die Schatten bereits sehr lang.

Direkt nach unserem Hotel check-in waren wir oberhalb der Stadt im Südwesten mit Blick aufs Segringer Tor in einer kleinen Straße zu finden. 

Wir lachten uns scheckig, weil Johanna all ihre Malsachen auf der gesamten Straße verteilte und die wenigen Autos, die vorbeikamen geduldig drumherum fuhren.

Alle Leute, Touris und Einheimische hatten nette Worte für uns und wir fühlten uns sehr willkommen.

Gegen 17 Uhr packten wir unsere Sachen und trafen uns mit den Anderen, um die weiteren Pläne für den Abend auszumachen, denn es stand ja noch das Abendessen und danach eines meiner persönlichen Highlights, nämlich "nightsketching" auf unserem Programm.
