A few days before my sketchtour I met with other watercolour friends in Bartenstein which is probably one of the smallest baroque residence towns hereabouts.
It took me about 50 min. from my hometown by car and it was worth the visit. There is a castle, a nice church, a fountain or two, a few small houses, gates etc. A sketchers dream.
We were about 10 watercolourists and were welcomed by friendly people. Start was at two and I did two large watercolours and one sketch till 7pm, when I left. Had so much fun with my friends I did not see for a longer time.
Einige Tage vor meiner Sketchtour traf ich mich noch mit einigen meiner Aquarellfreunde zum Malen in Bartenstein, das möglicherweise eine der kleinsten Barockresidenzen ist. Es gab ein Schloss, eine Kirche, ein oder zwei Brunnen, kleine Häuschen, Tore usw. Ein Traum für Maler.
compositional sketch
Wir waren ca. 10 Aquarellisten und die netten Bewohner hießen uns willkommen. Ich malte an diesem Nachmittag zwei A3 Bilder und eine Kompositionsskizze.
Wir starteten um 14 Uhr und ich war bis ca. 19 Uhr dort.
Also ich das letzte Bild (die Ansicht des Schlosses) malte war ich bereits ziemlich müde und wahrscheinlich auch einer der letzten Maler, die noch da waren...
You could say we are in deepest Hohenlohe with very tiny streets and lots of greenery around. The weather was beautiful the day we went to Mistlau at Jagst river.
We met at the bridge just right before you enter the village. The perfect spot seemed to be opposite the little village of Mistlau.
Katharina Sketching
We sat in the shade. It was very calm and just a farmer came by with his tractor a few times. Very rural and quiet. I think I could describe my watercolour as a drawing in layers or different grounds. From up to down: Sky - Forest - Village - River - Meadow. The orange pickup truck went away before I could colour so I tried to remember what it looked like (see photo). This is the fate of every urban sketcher that things change during a painting session. Behind the truck there was a garden with large sunflowers.

Diving into my painting and working from up to down I was very slow and precise this time and it took me about nearly four hours. Note: I used a large sheet (A3 Sketchbook). Katharina did several really cool smaller paintings. Check her out on Insta @rinibommel.
The stay here was very pleasant. Irgendwo im Nirgendwo...man könnte sagen wir sind im tiefsten Hohenlohe angekommen mit den kleinen Sträßchen und vielen Wald- und Wiesengebieten. Das Wetter war perfekt für unseren Ausflug nach Mistlau an der Jagst.
Wir trafen uns an der Brücke und fanden den perfekten Platz.
Im Schatten war es sehr ruhig und angenehm. Ein Bauer kam ab und zu mit dem Traktor vorbei, aber man könnte sagen, das war das Einzige, was uns von unserer Malerei ablenkte. Der orangefarbene Pickup Truck war während meiner Vorzeichnung noch da und als ich mit der Aquarellfarbe anfangen wollte, fuhr er weg. Das ist ein Urban Sketcher Dilemma...das Motiv verändert sich manchmal etwas. Hinter dem Fahrzeug befindet sich ein Garten mit grossen Sonnenblumen.
Mein Aquarell hatte dieses Mal folgenden Aufbau von oben nach unten: Himmel - Wald - Dorf - Fluss - Wiese. Ich war vertieft in mein Bild und brauchte tatsächlich fast vier Stunden, denn ich arbeitete recht präzise und verwendete mein A3 Skizzenbuch. Katharina machte viele sehr coole kleinere Bilder mit Tusche und Aquarell (Insta @rinibommel).
I am still at Schmerachklinge close to Oberscheffach.
My goal was to draw river Schmerach and the natural environment with trees, stones, water...
Surely there is an old barn close to the parking and it feels like being on holiday as you could bath at least your feet in the small river.
I just drew some stones and I tried a dark blue coloured pencil which was not watercolourable for my preliminary drawing and added watercolour later. Thought this might suit better the contrasts, than a less dark normal pencil. The movement of the water in the upper middleground was the most important for me in this drawing.
Ich befinde mich am Wanderparkplatz Schmerachklinge bei Oberscheffach. Ziel
war es für mich den kleinen Fluss Schmerach und die natürliche Umgebung mit
Ästen, Bäumen, Steinen, Wasser usw. zu malen. Natürlich gab es auch eine
alte Scheune in der Nähe und die Umgebung fühlte sich tatsächlich etwas
urlaubsmässig an, denn man hätte auch sein Handtuch ausbreiten, oder zumindest ein wenig die Füße ins Wasser hängen können.
Für mein Steine-Bild testete ich einen dunkelblauen Farbstift, der nicht mit Wasser anlösbar ist und der besser, als ein normaler Bleistift für die starken Kontraste, die es hier in der Umgebung hat geeignet ist. Die Bewegung des Wassers darzustellen (oberer Mittelgrund) war für mich hier der wichtigste Part in diesem Bild.
What a beautiful place in bright summer. Climbed the steep way down under the old bridge over river Bühler dating from 1836 to get a better view of the Leonhardsmühle. Initially I wanted to follow my compositional steps I mentioned in my former posts, but as I wandered around below the bridge I changed my mind completely and went further away from the mill and focused more on the weir, the bridge and the water movements (and a good place in the shade of a bush). The look through the bridge in the meantime seemed more interesting to me than the direct view to the mill.
Kristina joined in with her watercolours and did a quite nice drawing, too.
I felt very relaxed as you could hear the water sounds very well. See the photos of what I saw from the place I was seated at.
By the time I came to finish my watercolour, the
sun was coming quite strong from the front and my shady place was in
full sun. Time to leave as it is getting hot here.
Ein schöner Platz im Sommer. Ich kletterte den steilen Pfad runter zur alten Brücke über der Bühler, die 1836 erbaut worden ist. Ich wollte einen besseren Blick auf die Mühle haben, aber anstatt mich an meine ursprüngliche Komposition aus meinen schnellen Skizzen der letzten Posts zu halten, änderte ich meine Meinung komplett und ging unter der Brücke hindurch auf die andere Seite. Der Blick durch die Brücke hindurch war nun plötzlich spannender für mich.
Kristina malte auch in Aquarell ein paar Meter entfernt von mir. Mit dem Geräusch des Wassers fühlten wir uns sehr entspannt und tauchten in unsere Bilder ein. Ich habe Fotos beigefügt, damit man einen Eindruck bekommt, wie es dort aussah.
Als ich dann mit meinem Aquarell fertig war, war die Sonne bereits etwas weitergewandert und ich saß in praller Sonne. Das war für mich der Zeitpunkt aufzubrechen.
The rythm of the rushing water to the right, compared to the calm water to the left is the interesting part of the sketch. In the upper sketch I used a Rosemaries brush which has a thicker tip, but can carry lots of water and for the colour composition I used a three colour composition (see below). The green colours are not really easy to achieve with this colour triad as well as I am not satisfied with the darkest darks so I tried a fourth sketch of the weir combining colours I liked and the composition with the mill a little more to the right side.
In this last sketch I used 5 colours to my liking and a brush with a good (synthetic) tip. Knowing that in a larger painting I will use any colour that comes into my mind this is just a compositional reference to help me sketch and bring forth some interesting parts into my painting like the transition between: Calm and more busy areas, between dark and light and between foreground, middle- and background. Enough of my compositional thoughts for today...
Der Rhythmus des Wassers - ruhig auf der linken und bewegt auf der rechten Seite - macht für mich die Spannung der Skizze aus.
In der zweiten Skizze habe ich die Mühle noch etwas nach rechts gerückt und die Dunkelheiten hervorgehoben. Farbangaben und Pinselverwendung sind jeweils unter den Skizzen vermerkt.
As I first saw the mill and the weir in Unterscheffach, I thought about the composition as for me the water was the most important and should therefore have most of the space in the drawing. In order to investigate more about my subject I tried some kind of notan first. Notan is a Japanese term which literally means "light dark harmony".
I used it to explore different arrangements of light
and dark elements in my sketch for the mill painting in Unterscheffach, as I did not want to have the distraction of other
elements like color, texture and finer details in the first place.
In my second sketch I tried a very muted version with two earth colours and ultramarine to get a different result. No greens can be gotten out of the mixtures, but this is not important, as I concentrated on the water and the reflections in the water. The mill is still very much in the centre which I will probably place more to one side of the paper in a future painting. I like the curved part of the weir which makes it a very dynamic view and you could almost hear the sounds of the water... I indicated the colours I used below the sketch. Maybe I should do more versions to get a clue how to get to a certain harmony in a larger painting on site.
Als ich die Mühle und das Wehr in Unterscheffach zum ersten Mal sah, hatte ich bereits eine gewisse Vorstellung zur Bildkomposition. Um diese zu festigen dachte ich mir, ein Notan als Hilfestellung wäre nicht schlecht. Man blendet praktisch die Farbigkeit aus und lässt sich nur von Helligkeit und Dunkelheit im Bild leiten.
Als nächstes machte ich eine Skizze mit zwei Erdtönen und Ultramarin, um mich mit der Materie noch mehr auseinander zu setzen.
Die Mühle ist mir hier noch etwas zu mittig angeordnet, aber das Wasser nimmt den grössten Teil der Fläche ein, was mir gut gefällt, denn das steht ja im Mittelpunkt.
Man kann die Bewegung des Wassers fast hören...
Die verwendeten Farben habe ich angegeben. Vielleicht sollte ich noch mehr Versionen ausprobieren...
It is a day with rainy weather all morning. I packed my usual stuff plus raincoat and a few extra watercolour papers to eventually paint the clouds which are heavy and beautifully different today. We were lucky that the rain did not continue in the afternoon and as we painted the little chappel in Unterscheffach, we got in touch with lots of local people, interested in what we do at this scenic place.
One said: Hope it is going to be a "Picasso"! And yes we definitely had some fun. The chicken made their funny noises and a nice guy who had mown the lawn in front of the chappel earlier before we came, got back with his rake to get his hay together, while explaining to us that the history of the little chappel is written by the door and -who used to live where- in the adjacent houses. After 2,5 hours I considered my drawing finished (no Picasso!) and went home, again with lots of stops to investigate for new painting spots. After one drawing is before a new one...
Es regnete den ganzen Morgen. Zu meinen normalen Malsachen packte ich auch noch eine Regenjacke und etwas extra Papier für Wolkenstudien. Die Wolken waren dick und schwer und so schön anders wie sonst.
Wir hatten grosses Glück, denn es regnete am Nachmittag nicht mehr und wir konnten die kleine Kapelle in Unterscheffach malen. Wir kamen mit den Leuten des Ortes ins Gespräch, die sich wunderten, was wir da machten.
Einer sagte: Hoffentlich wird es ein "Picasso"! Ja wir hatten richtig Spaß. Die Hühner direkt neben uns machten ihre lustigen Geräusche und ein Mann rechte das Heu an der Kapelle zusammen und erzählte uns derweil einige interessante Dinge über den Ort. Die Geschichte der Kapelle sei an der Tür angeschlagen, sagte er. Er erzählte auch, welches Haus dem Schuhmacher und dem Wagner gehörten...Nach ca. 2,5 h betrachtete ich mein A3 Bild als fertig (...kein Picasso!) und fuhr nach Hause. Natürlich wieder mit vielen Stops dazwischen, denn ich schaute nach neuen geeigneten Orten zum Malen...
A small sketchkit and a bike are the only things that I needed on this warm day to have a great time.
I was looking for a place with a view and found it direction Gründelhardt. There is a valley you can overlook and in the far distance some wind turbines could be seen. The different greens of the fields are creating beautiful shapes and a farmer covered some hay for the winter with a green-turquoise cover in the foreground.
Ein kleines Sketchkit und mein Fahrrad waren alles, was ich an diesem warmen Tag zum Glücklichsein brauchte.
Ein schöner Platz mit Blickrichtung Gründelhardt war schnell gefunden. Man kann von dort aus ein Tal, mit verschiedenfarbigen Feldern und mit einigen Windrädern im Hintergrund überblicken. Im Vordergrund sieht man, dass ein Landwirt vorgesorgt und Heu für den Winter mit einer türkis-grünen Plane abgedeckt hat.
It is a very beautiul day today. I packed my colours and sketchbook and biked to a very lonely and beautiful place in my neighborhood. This time I had a picknick blanket with me and I did a 20 min. sketch of the fields (see above). What I considered important for my todays drawing was the following: Begin first with the big shapes of the fields and not fiddle around.
Shapes in different shades of green. It was a very relaxed thing and after twenty minutes I changed my position direction forest. The next sketch was a place besides some pine trees which are not to be found very often hereabouts. They smell incredibly well.
The Kuckuck made his funny noises in the background.
My water container was empty, so I took out the waterbrush. The colours are more watery therefore in my second sketch (below) and I went away after 15 minutes
as I did not too much like the dull result.
I will come back soon again to this quiet hohenlohe spot.
Das Wetter ist toll und ich war wieder draussen zum Malen. Dafür hab ich mein Skizzenbuch und eine Picknickdecke eingepackt. Das erste Bild oben dauerte 20 Minuten und die grossen grünen Flächen waren mir dabei wichtig.
Danach machte ich noch eine schnelle Skizze oben am Hochstand. Es gibt dort Pinien, die man hier nicht oft sieht. Die duften sehr gut und im Hintergrund hat mir der Kuckuck sein Lied gesungen.
Leider war mein Wasser alle. Ich hab daher für diesen Sketch meine Waterbrush verwendet. Das Ergebnis hat mich nicht sehr überzeugt, denn die Farben kommen damit einfach zu schwach und wässrig raus. Nach 15 Minuten gab ich auf. Hierher werde ich bald mal wieder kommen. Ein sehr entspanntes Stückchen Hohenlohe.

Birches are so good to paint. My painting friend Gaby sent me this photo of the three birches with rape field and I had to paint it. I don't know exactly where this is, but it is still in Hohenlohe.
In my sketchbook I abstracted the yellow fields, as the bold colour is what attracts my view. In many of my paintings and sketches I indicated the colour combinations lately for future reference and in order to do some sort of colour diary which can help me later with other sketches and paintings - it is some sort of library for future projects.
The important for those yellow fields is that the yellow colour you have in your palette is not polluted by any other colour. Therefore I thoroughly clean my brush before going into the yellows. Some people have two same yellows in their palette - one for mixing greens and one for mixing oranges...
Birken lassen sich sehr gut malen. Daher habe ich mich gefreut, als meine Malfreundin Gaby mir das Foto zugeschickt hat. Eine gute Vorlage und ich musste das Bild auch sofort malen. Leider weiss ich nicht genau, wo das ist, aber es ist auf jeden Fall irgendwo in Hohenlohe.
In meinem Skizzenbuch habe ich die Rapsfelder sehr abstrahiert. Die Farbkombinationen habe ich oft angegeben. Ein Tipp zu den gelben Feldern ist: Die gelbe Farbe sollte nicht mit anderer Farbe verschmutzt werden, denn sonst gibt es eine Schlammfarbe. Daher verwenden manche zwei gleiche Gelbtöne nebeneinander - die Eine für die Mischung von Grüntönen und die Andere zur Mischung von Orangetönen. Ich selbst wasche meinen Pinsel immer sehr gründlich bevor ich in den gelben Farbton gehe, denn ich will die reine Farbe verwenden.
Another light yellow field. In the middle ground a few houses and large white sloe bushes. I enjoy the season and try to paint as many fields as possible of these crops into my sketchbook. The seeds are used to extract rapeseed oil.
I began this sketchbook (Strathmore) last year with a few of the fields and continued a few days ago in order to have them all in one book.

Wieder ein gelbes Feld. Im Mittelgrund sieht man einige Häuser und die verblühenden Schlehensträucher, die nicht mehr ganz weiß sind. Ich genieße diese Zeit und versuche so viele Felder, wie möglich in mein Skizzenbuch zu bannen. Die Rapssamen werden übrigens hauptsächlich zu Öl verarbeitet.
Mein Skizzenbuch (Strathmore) habe ich im letzten Jahr mit einigen Rapsfeldern begonnen und erst jetzt zur Saison wieder in die Hand genommen und weitergemalt. Ich möchte die gelben Felder gerne alle in einem Buch haben.
Im zweiten Bild sind wieder meine Farbangaben zu sehen.

Another field close by. I came here by bike. The view is beautiful, because it is uphill and you can see very far. Here are my colour notes:
Wieder ein Feld in der Nähe. Ich kam mit dem Fahrrad her. Das Feld liegt auf einer Anhöhe und der Blick ist sehr schön, weil man weit sehen kann. Nebenstehend sind wieder meine Farbinformationen dazu.
Then I went a bit futher and did this view from another field in the distance. Did you see the three recycling glass containers? (...search the mouse...;o)
Dann bin ich noch etwas weiter gefahren und habe diesen Blick gemalt von einem weiter entfernten Feld gemalt. Habt ihr die drei Glass Recycling Container entdeckt? (...such die Maus...;o)
This yellow field is done in Cad-free Yellow Pale. For further reference I made a colour chart of the colours I used into my sketchbook besides my sketch. Please see below. Together with lush greens and the bright cerulean sky I believe it is a great impression on how beautiful the Hohenlohe landscape is. The below mix is quite vibrant and I like it.
Further down I also did a few single plants, to show that they are cool to paint as well...and they smell... maybe not as a perfume, but it is an aromatic scent of spring in the air...
Das obere Rapsfeld wurde mit Cad-frei Yellow Pale gemalt.
Damit man meine Farbauswahl besser nachvollziehen kann, habe ich die Farben seitlich im Skizzenbuch vermerkt. Das Gelb ist zusammen mit den Grüntönen und dem klaren blauen Himmel ein schöner Eindruck, wie eine Landschaft in Hohenlohe aussehen kann.
Im unteren Bild habe ich die einzelnen Pflanzen in den Vordergrund gerückt, damit man auch sieht, um was für Blüten es sich handelt. Das ist auch super zum Malen geeignet, ausserdem haben sie einen bestimmten aromatischen Duft...man merkt, dass wir mitten im Frühling sind.
Every year in the end of April and beginning of May the rape fields are in full bloom hereabouts and lucky me I have about 5 large fields in walking distance of my home. My first sight of the yellow fields today is the above impression close to Waldbuch. I came by here as I had to take a detour due to a fire incident and saw this yellow farmhouse and barn. The fields, partly yellow or green can be seen in the distance.
In the afternoon I made a walk with my sketchbook to another field, but this was a disaster, as the ants close to the field went into my trousers to bite... you can imagine that I hurried and within 15 minutes I quit. The hectic can be seen in my - v e r y - fast direct watercolour sketch:
I enclose a colour card that I took with me to get the comparison on site on which yellow to use for the field.
The Cad-free Yellow Pale and the Cad-free Yellow seem to be good colours for it. More yellow fields are close and wait to be drawn, I will try different options.
Jedes Jahr Ende April, Anfang Mai sind bei uns die Rapsfelder in voller Blüte.
Ich habe in der Nähe ca. 5 grosse Felder, die ich bequem zu Fuß besuchen und malen kann. Heute war meine erste Sichtung in der Nähe von Waldbuch. Ich musste einer Umleitung folgen, denn es hat im Ort gebrannt, also kam ich nach Waldbuch. Die gelbe Scheune, das Haus (auch in Gelb) und das Rapsfeld in der Ferne waren für mich ein perfektes Motiv.
Am Nachmittag machte ich mich mit meinem Skizzenbuch auf, um nochmal zu malen, aber das war nur ein kurzer Ausflug. Die Skizze dauerte maximal 15 Minuten, denn die Ameisen hatten Gefallen an mir gefunden und ich beendete hektisch meine direkte Aquarellskizze.
This was the first "Urban Sketching"-Adventure for my friend Silvie (the author see this post), although it was not really urban where we drew - it was in the forest. She did very well. We had beautiful weather and a quiet place in the shade while drawing. Two passers by asked if we counted the traffic - haha - (... in the end we counted 4 bikes and 1 inliner...you see it was very busy...).

Das war das erste "Urban Sketching"-Abenteuer für meine Freundin Silvie (Die Autorin siehe Post) und sie hat es super gemacht. Der Ort an dem wir gemalt haben war nicht gerade urban, sondern ein sehr ruhiger Flecken im Wald. Das Wetter war klasse und wir suchten einen Platz im Schatten. Silvie malte mit Hingabe. Es war sehr entspannend und zwei Fahrradfahrer fragten uns, ob wir den Verkehr zählen würden - sehr witzig (ich weiss nicht wie oft ich diesen Spruch schon gehört habe... aber auf jeden Fall kamen während unserer Zeit dort insgesamt 4 Fahrräder und 1 Inliner vorbei...ein unglaublicher Verkehr...)
A sketch of the quarry by the river Bühler. I regret having used a simple black pen as the watercolour destroyed the lines in the upper part.
Tomorrow I will be up and away for a new travel adventure so stay tuned for my new creative experiences...
Eine Skizze des Steinbruchs an der Bühler. Leider habe ich keinen wasserfesten Stift verwendet und die Linien im oberen Teil des Bildes wurden durch die Aquarellfarbe etwas zerstört.
Ab morgen werde ich wieder auf Kreativ-Reise gehen, also viel Spass mit meinen neuen Reiseskizzen...
