Memory of Sicily - Around the Corner of Palermo Cathedral

 

This is an A3 watercolour on simple watercolour paper in my large sketchbook. It took me several attempts to finish as of drying time in between. The excerpt is well planned because I was interested in contrasts between OLD and NEW again, as well as LIGHT against DARK. The old stones and buildings compared to the modern street signs and the surveillance camera at the top of the building. The left upper part is in warmer colours and the rest in cooler ones.

For me this watercolour is a great memory of the warm times we had in Palermo this fall. I exaggerated the warm-cold-contrast a bit. My large sketchbook does not take too many layers - a limitation I can live with. Here is another sketch of the cathedral: HERE (from my smaller travel sketchbook). You will see that the cathedral is huge. 

Hier mein A3 Aquarell auf einfachem Aquarellpapier, das in einem grossen Skizzenbuch gebunden ist. Für dieses Bild brauchte ich mehrere Anläufe aufgrund der Trocknungszeit. Meine Entscheidung genau für diesen Ausschnitt kann ich begründen. Wieder hat mich der Kontrast zwischen ALT und NEU sowie HELL gegenüber DUNKEL sehr gereizt. Alt sind all die Gebäude und modern sind die Schilder und auch die Überwachungskamera oben am Gebäude. 

Das Aquarell erinnert mich an die warme Zeit in Palermo diesen Herbst und die Warm-Kalt Kontraste habe ich etwas verstärkt. Mein grosses Skizzenbuch ist jedoch in der Farbaufnahme limitiert. Damit kann ich aber leben. Hier eine andere Skizze der Kathedrale (aus meinem kleinen Skizzenbuch). Die Kathedrale ist riesig. 

Memory of Sicily - Quattro Canti

 

Memory mood. Thinking back at Quattro Canti in Palermo. Old and new side by side. What to say about this one. It was an experiment again. This time, after doing my pencil sketch I dropped some blue ink into the left part of the drawing and used the wet ink also in some other places. It was this ink, called Frieda and it dried real fast:

Therefore I used an old brush to move around the ink, as I feared to destroy one of my good brushes.

The colour suits my drawing and is much darker than you can get with indigo watercolour. The ink can be as well diluted with water. 

The combination of the bold use of ink is really fun. Will probably try more of these. 

Im Erinnerungs-Modus male ich hier einen Bildausschnitt von Quattro Canti in Palermo. Wiedereinmal reizt mich der Kontrast ALT zu NEU und HELL versus DUNKEL. 

Heute habe ich mir für die sehr dunklen Stellen eine Tusche mit Namen Frieda zu Hilfe genommen. Beschreibung links.

Die Tusche ist auf jeden Fall dunkler, als ich die Farbe mit indigo aus dem Aquarellkasten hätte machen können. Ich habe die Tusche direkt auf mein dickes Papier getropft und dann mit einem alten Pinsel verwischt und von dort auch an anderen Stellen im Bild verwendet. Die Tusche trocknet sehr sehr schnell. Sie kann mit Wasser verdünnt werden.

Die Kombination von Aquarell mit Tusche gefällt mir grossflächig sehr gut. Da werde ich bestimmt noch ein paar Tests dazu machen. 

Memory of Sicily - Sundrenched Cathedral

 

My todays question is, "how to get a sun-kissed look in watercolour". I will show you how I dealed with that.

I started with a thoughtful sketch on the cutout of a larger photo (you never need to do a full view, just cut out the things you like). 

I am searching for a focal point to start from. Here the two statues and the sign (which I absolutely wanted to draw in because it makes an interesting contrast of new versus old...).

Here is the sketch. This is my foreground. In my opinion it is always easier to do a more exact sketch in front in order to be more sure of where to place the colours later. My next step was filling the background with warm colours.

 

Here you do not have to be very precise, just warm colours for a sunny look.

And there you go with the rest. Use colder, darker colours for the foreground and that is the whole secret to it.

 

Ein sonnendurchflutetes Bild kann man am Besten machen, wenn man die Vorzeichnung genau und den sonnigen Teil etwas ungenauer macht. Den Hintergrund habe ich in einem warmen Ton gehalten und vorne dunklere, kältere Töne verwendet. Das ist das ganze Geheimnis...

Memory of Sicily - Five in a row

While the weather is cold in my homecountry let's dream of the warm Sicilian sun.

For this watercolour I again used some Prima Tek Colours (watercolours with minerals). I.e. Tiger's Eye for the two wooden pots and Sugilite as well as Blue Apatite for the wall in front. I like testing colours and these are very useful for plants and in order to create some sort of patterns for natural surfaces like walls.

Während es bei uns so kalt ist, können wir nur von der warmen sizilianischen Sonne träumen.

Für dieses Aquarell habe ich mal wieder ein paar Prima Tek Farben (Aquarellfarben aus Mineralien) verwendet. Z.B. Tiegerauge für die beiden Holzpötte und Sugilite sowie Blue Apatite für die vordere Wand. Farben zu testen macht mir Spaß und diese Farben können ganz hilfreich bei Pflanzen oder natürlichen Oberflächen wie Holz sein, denn die Muster auf den Oberflächen lassen sich durch sie ganz gut darstellen.

Memory of Sicily - View through trees

Although the weather is good in my country I  think back a lot of Sicily. I even tried to do the famous Sicilian Busiate noodles today and I was quite astonished -  it was a success. My folks liked it.

Obwohl das Wetter hier sehr schön ist, muss ich an Sizilien zurückdenken. Ich habe heute sogar die berühmten Nudeln Busiate selbst gemacht und war erstaunt, wie gut das ging - ein voller Erfolg.

Memory of Sicily - Old house in Castellammare

When I came by here I knew that I had to draw this house on the street corner, just because of its colours. Turquoise, red, brown and yellow parts showed through the ocre wall. All ancient paints that came through over the years which makes it to me a super-interesting building for a watercolour.

Als ich hier an dieser Ecke vorbeikam wusste ich sofort, dass dieses Haus an der Straßenecke nur wegen seiner Farben an der Hauswand super zu malen wäre. Türkise, rote, braune und gelbe Farbflächen schauten unter der eigentlich ockerfarbenen Wand heraus. Alle alten Farbanstriche kamen irgendwie über die Jahre durch und das macht für mich den Reiz aus, das Motiv als Aquarell zu malen.

Memory of Sicily - Wildflowers besides the chapel

At the edge of San Vito lo Capo you find that little chappel within a sea of wildflowers. It is the chapel of holy Creszentia and dates from the 16 century. Wild fennel is spread along the way with large yellow inflorescences and the hinterland with its mountains can be seen in the background. I used lots of yellow ocre, siena and other earth tones for this one. I tried a new to me colour, which is buff titanium DS. You can see this chalkish tone in the landscape here and there. It is a rather opaque watercolour a bit like naples yellow from the consistency side, but tends more to have a more chalk-greyish-white tone. I will test how to best use it.

Am Rande von San Vito lo Capo kann man diese kleine Kapelle aus dem 16. Jhd. inmitten eines Meeres aus Wildblumen besuchen. Es ist die Kapelle der heiligen Kreszentia und ist noch sehr gut erhalten. Der hohe, wilde Fenchel, den es hier überall gibt leuchtet mit seinen hellgelben Blütenständen und das Hinterland mit den Bergen ist in zurückhaltenden Farben im Hintergrund zu sehen. Für die Kapelle habe ich sehr viel ocker, siena und andere Erdtöne verwendet. Eine für mich neue Farbe habe ich auch verwendet und das ist das Buff Titanium DS - eine Art naturweiss/beige, das man in der Landschaft im Vordergrund hier und da sehen kann. Die Farbe ist eher deckend und verhält sich ein wenig wie Neapelgelb, aber es ist eher ein kalkig-naturweisser Farbton. Ich muss noch ein paar Tests damit machen, damit ich besser einschätzen kann, wie die Farbe einsetzbar ist.

Memory of Sicily - The fisherman and his boat

As I saw this Sicilian fisherman working on his boat in dry dock in front of the old building I already imagined how I would draw my watercolour later. In my opinion some sights I see, absolutely need to be painted! This was one of them. 

It was great fun to create the wall of the building out of yellows and ocres and different earth tones. It is nearly week-end. I eventually will have more time for my garden then unless other "serious painting emergencies" come up...

 Als ich die Szene im Hafen sah hatte ich bereits im Kopf, wie ich mein Aquarell dafür anlegen wollte. Meiner Meinung nach gibt es Ansichten, oder Situationen bei denen man direkt weiss, das könnte einmal ein Bild werden, das unbedingt gemalt werden muss! Hier handelte es sich um ein solches Motiv.

Es war wirklich toll die Wand des Gebäudes im Hintergrund aus Gelbtönen und Ocker sowie verschiedenen Erdtönen zu malen. Gut, dass bald Wochenende ist, dann habe ich möglicherweise auch mal etwas mehr Zeit für meinen Garten - aber nur wenn nicht wieder ein "extrem super-dringendes Malmotiv" auf mich wartet...

Memory of Sicily - Scopello

Work has me back again and time is scarce. My garden cries out for me but I am so full of drawing ideas - I need to draw. This is a part of Scopello the tiny town in Trapani Region. The plants are beautiful here and my guilty conscience regarding my garden comes up again. Ok still a bit of time left to water the thirsty plants...and there will certainly be a tomorrow.

Die Arbeit hat mich zurück und die Zeit ist mal wieder knapp. Auch mein Garten schreit nach mir. Tatsächlich muss ich aber erstmal malen, denn mein Kopf ist voller Ideen. Das Bild zeigt einen Teil von Scopello in der Region Trapani. Die Pflanzen sind hier so schön gewesen...das erinnert mich an meinen eigenen Garten und mein schlechtes Gewissen nagt an mir...ok es ist zumindest noch etwas Zeit da, um die durstigsten Pflanzen zu wässern... und morgen ist auch noch ein Tag.

Memory of Pizzo - Promenade

It was a cloudy day when we came here. My focus was actually on the clouds and I used thick cerulean colour to make it more vibrant.

Es war ein wolkiger Tag, als wir hierher kamen. Mein Fokus waren tatsächlich die Wolken und ich habe eine Menge dickes Cerulean Blau verwendet, damit der Himmel leuchtender wird.

Memory of Tropea - The Gate

Tropea: This is the gate to go to the beach. After a rainshower, the surrounding colours where very bright and darker than usual. I did the watercolour with the help of a photo, this is probably why I painted it even darker than if I drew it on site. Here I could plunge into all of my greens. I mostly use them ready made as it is quicker than mixing big puddles from yellow and blue. 

Tropea: Das ist das Tor zum Strand. Nach einem Regenschauer waren die Umgebungsfarben kräftiger, als vorher. Das Aquarell habe ich anhand eines Fotos gemacht und das ist sicher auch der Grund, warum es etwas dunkler geraten ist, als ein plein-air Bild. Hier konnte ich mich mit meinen Grüntönen austoben. Ich verwende meistens fertige Grüntöne, damit ich schneller bin, anstatt mir die Töne aus Gelb und Blau anzumischen.
