Acrylic Markers

Back at home after my stay in Sicily, a while ago it was an extreme difference in terms of temperature and weather. It was like coming from summer to fall in one day. At home the trees begin to loose their leaves and the temperatures are very low already. Good that the Sketch Marathon in Prague was another Event that challenged me.

To cheer me up a bit, I ordered some new stuff like some acrylic and gelly markers to try some new things.

What a fun to do portrait sketches of my sketchers friends Anna and Stephanie with different painting media.

I really enjoyed this test and will probably use these if there is not enough time to watercolour.

Very cool acrylics of which I had never thought having fun with...Joao Catarino told me at USk Symposium in Porto that he was using them all the time and they came again into my mind as I watched Jan Vitek paint...so far I just own the four different colours you see in my upper sketches, which for fast portraits (here on brown paper) come in handy.

Brown Ink and Watercolour Sketch

Lately I am experimenting a lot. I rediscovered a little jar of brown ink I never use. My watercolour friend Gaby ordered it for some of our watercolour group a few years ago. I did not want to fill it into a fountain pen, so I watered a large brush and dipped into the ink. It turned out to be quite fun and the ink could be diluted for shadows - just a little more water on the brush and then it works.

My subject is an angel which I saw at Piazza San Domenico in Palermo. I did not do any preliminary drawing and just started with the ink. The background in watercolour was done later.

Have a look at your old stuff and try some new things with it...

stones by the sea - test of coloured pencils

Today I am testing the coloured pencils I ordered a few days ago.

6 pencils are from Caran d'Ache (I would use them for nightsketching and seascapes and probably winter scenes)

These Pablo permanent colours are not water-colourable.

- I tried them using a blue watercolour over the first row of colours.

- The second row is the plain colour of the pencil

- Third row is showing if it can cover an ink line (...which the dark tones
   actually can.)

The tips glide very well over the paper and the colours can be intermixed on the paper. They are not dominant if you use them as a finish or an addition into a watercolour drawing.

I would also use them instead of a usual pencil for preliminary drawing as a preparation for a watercolour.

The Derwent lightfast colours are different. They are kind of oily and cover more of the line and they seem very soft, the pigments are rich and quite intense.

I intend to use them also preferably in night sketches or if vibrant colours are needed.

As you can see

- in the first row if watercolour is put on top they repell the watercolour (like wax does)

- in the second row you see the plain colour

- in the third row you can see that the darker colours also cover the ink line

I definitely like both kind of coloured pencils...maybe the Caran d'Ache a bit better as they glide even a bit softer over the paper and are quite good for preliminary coloured pencil drawing for watercolour sketching...and what I like very much is that they seldomly break! (please try for yourself and note that this is my very personal opinion)

Sicilian Fisherman

You might have noticed that I begin to use more different colours, like here there are six of them. Very unusual for me is that I inserted a black tone (here: Mars Black). Usually I mix my blacks as I believe they look more vibrant. Here I mixed the black with prussian blue and a bit of Perylene Violet to get the tone of the black tyres and the shadows on them. Not too much mixing elsewhere in this watercolour, just a fast sketch to remind me of good times in Sicily. I think of my friends there. Take care.

Bleibt gesund.

Watercolour Portrait Sketch - Susi II

I am right at the beginning of testing dot cards as I have lots of new colour combinations in mind to try.

Still the cad-free colours are in my main focus so I did another portrait of Susi with a combination of four colours, two of them are cad-free colours from the dot card. We also had one in the Augsburg goodie-bag.

Back to the portrait: This time the skin colour combination for the most parts is cad-free yellow and cad-free scarlet. It makes a very smooth, fresh combination. For shadow parts I used darker colours.

Here you can see my painting setup. Although I reduced myself to just four colours it is good to have more available, when needed.

Thank you for the complete colour card to W&N colours. More tests and colour combinations to follow...

watercolour portrait sketch and Cadmium-Free Watercolours

Today I would like to rewiew the cadmium-free watercolour tones received in form of dot cards from Winsor&Newton. This is a super development as cadmium is not healthy. (It is said that cadmium pigments can be potentially toxic if inhaled or eaten.) I do not eat my colours, but any development that can make colours safer is welcome to me.

In the beginning I thought this would be a nice thing for painting our rape fields in watercolour class, as usually in spring I draw them as soon as the bright yellow appears in the landscape (and so far I did it with cadmium lemon and orange, new gamboge and the like - see my last years spring posts on that theme), but now I had a much better idea.

Here you see my first trial of those cadmium-free colours for a portrait sketch and I am very pleased with the results of the reds, oranges and yellows.

They are very bright and so far I just discovered that cad-free scarlet is a bit different in vibrancy than the cadmium scarlet. I will have to do a few more tests in the near future and I try to be disciplined enough to include the colours I used for my sketches from time to time.
(...here is where I have to think before I draw!)

The cad-free scarlet btw is super for creating a bright skin colour in my opinion (not pure as it is strong, but in mixtures it is very pleasant). The yellows are more difficult to mix than yellow ochre for skin colours, but if you try the mixes on a paper before applying, it is easy to achieve the right tone.

Note: For portraying in my opinion it is important to also use some darker colours as well as a mixing combination i.e. a blue and/or a brown.

I like the colours and will successively change from cadmium to cadmium-free colours.  What a good idea.

Tolle Idee.

PrimaTek DS Dot Card

Yesterday's garden work and the will to test a few new things I still have left on my desk from the Amsterdam goodies brought the idea of combining drawing a leaf with testing the PrimaTek colour dot card I received (15 different colours).

DS produces about 35 PrimaTek Watercolors like Bloodstone Genuine, Jadeite Genuine and Sodalite Genuine etc. According to them nearly all PrimaTeks have granulating properties giving them wonderful texture and depth and after my test I have to admit, that they granulate wonderfully and I fell in love with the vibrancy of green Apatite and Hematite Burnt Scarlet for that reason.

In my test i.e. the Apatite and Sodalite colour made magic patterns after drying and some colours even sparkle like Sugilite. Many of the PrimaTeks are made from mineral pigments (some are semi-precious minerals) that produce vibrant, luminous colors, like Amethyst Genuine, Serpentine Genuine and Rhodonite Genuine.

There were also some weaker colours among these 15 tested which in my personal opinion are not as bright though: Lapis Lazuli and Tiger's Eye as well as Red Fuchsite. I truly like the bright colours so these are too weak for my style of painting.

If I would add some of these 15 to my outdoor palette it would definitely be the greens like green Apatite and Serpentine. The Rhodonite seems good as well, but still needs to be tested as it is very close to the pink opéra colour I use.

In my upper sketch I used some yellow and ochre from my usual palette to complete the leaf colours and the bright blue is not the lapis lazuli, but my usual cerulean.

Comfortable Window Seat

My pencil drawing was made with a product out of the Augsburg goodie bag which was the Pentel graph 500. I usually use normal pencils and was surprised how easy this one worked on the fine grained paper I used. As a paper I tried the postcard sized of Stillman&Birn Alpha paper which is 150 g, fine grain and rather for dry media.

Several layers in my usual watercolour technique were done, but it needed a lot of effort to get the colours to this glow. At least after a lot of tuning I reached the point I wanted to. For sketching outside in my kind of technique it is not the right paper as it seems to absorbs somehow the watercolour (?), but if you use dry technique it might be good for you. Anyhow I am satisfied with the outcome.

Two weeks ago there was this kind of Octoberfest in our town and besides other attractions for me and my fellow sketching friends it was a joy to sit at the edge of a Bierzelt (beer tent) and sketch the people around.

My sketch shows the girl at the table next to us and I thought I could post this image as the photo is not extremely clear to be able to recognize the faces of the real people...

Much fun thanks to my great sketching companions.

BTW, my paper was a Stillman&Birn Gamma (ivory) paper I had in a set with other papers in the Augsburg goodie bag. This one is 150 g and works quite well for fast sketches with ink and small amounts of watercolour.
