Mood of the day sketch - Sunset

 

We had a spectacular sunset on March 8. As I saw it I grabbed the little book I am using for a good month. 

I realized that this is the very last page in my toned (Hahnemühle) watercolour book. As I said it took me a month to fill the 32 sheets (I used front and back). It became like a daily habit to sketch into it. The sides are 14 x 14 cm and the paper is light brown, 200 gms watercolour paper. It is suitable for watercolour, gouache, pencil, ....you name it. I paint on both, front and backside to have more like a panorama format. The book outside cover is really neat too and it has a band to keep it closed in the bag.

It was quite useful to have this short format in order to be able to sometimes squeeze in a fast sketch of a sunset or if I did not have enough time and wanted to do at least one sketch a day. For me it was the right book at the right time and it was very convenient to work with. 

I already ordered a new one to be able to continue the fast "mood sketching" with Antonella, Anna, and the others of our small international, virtual sketch group. (btw. I would never have tested the book as I usually love to work with white paper, but this was a present I received from my friend Hélio Boto and I wanted to try it. Thank you Hélio, I appreciated it).

Am 8. März hatten wir einen spektakulären Sonnenuntergang und da musste ich natürlich gleich wieder das Skizzenbuch zücken. Das war leider die letzte Seite meines kleinen 14 x 14 cm grossen Hahnemühle Aquarellbuch, das ich von Hélio zu Weihnachten bekommen hatte. Gut einen Monat habe ich gebraucht um es mit schnellen rohen Skizzen zu füllen und es hat richtig Spass gemacht. Ich habe immer die Doppelseiten bemalt, denn dann hat man ein Panorama-Format. Das Buch ist auf jeden Fall für Aquarell, Gouache, Buntstifte geeignet. Es hat 200g Papier und ein schönes hellbraunes Cover mit Band zum Schließen. 

Das Buch war gerade richtig für schnelle tägliche Skizzen, denn manchmal hatte ich nur wenig Zeit und da war es dann passend ein kleines Format zu haben. Jetzt habe ich nochmal eines nachgeordert, denn die schnellen "mood sketches" möchte ich weitermachen zusammen mit Antonella, Anna,....und den Anderen aus unserer kleinen internationalen, virtuellen Gruppe. 

Mood of the day sketch - My little valley

 

Still very cold this March 07 (the glasses of my greenhouse are frozen). Here is a view of my little valley.

Too bad, this is the second last page in my tiny brown sketchbook. Need to order a new one.

Es ist noch immer sehr kalt and diesem 07. März. Die Scheiben an meinem Gewächshaus sind vereist. Hier ist der Blick in mein kleines Tal.

Schade, jetzt ist in meinem kleinen braunen Skizzenbuch nur noch eine Doppelseite übrig. Muss schnellstens für Nachschub sorgen.

Mood of the day sketch - Heuschober

 

The sun is shining with -3 this morning (dates from 06.03.21). Here is a barn from the neighborhood. The colours act very much as they should and the brown page of the book is well integrated this time.

Die Sonne scheint mit -3 Grad heute früh (am 06.03.21). Hier ein Heuschober aus der Nachbarschaft. Die Farben taten an diesem Tag, was sie sollten und das braune Papier passt hier gut.

Mood of the day sketch - Am Bach entlang

 

As I shared this sketch in the beginning of March with my friends of the "mood of the day" group, I wrote the following:

It looks so much like good weather in my sketch. Actually it was cold and we had a bit of everything like rain, snow and very little sunshine... (Note: That was in the beginning of March). 

Als ich diese Skizze Anfang März mit meinen Freunden aus der kleinen "Mood of the day" Gruppe teilte schrieb ich folgendes:

Es schaut in meiner Skizze sehr nach gutem Wetter aus, aber wir hatten tatsächlich sehr kaltes Wetter und etwas Regen, Schnee und auch etwas Sonne... (Anmerkung: Das war Anfang März).

Mood of the day sketch - Burgberg

 

 

A nice late afternoon hike up to Burgberg beginning of March. The red tower is a landmark here. There is a round trail and an artist made some nice (animal shape) wooden signs. The weather was grey, but there were enough red, brown and green colours for me to paint the forest.

Ein später Nachmittags-Spaziergang am Burgberg zu Beginn des Monats März. Der rote Turm ist von überallher sichtbar und sehr bekannt. Auf dem Rundweg kann man die Werke eines Holzkünstlers bestaunen, der Wegweiser in Tierform aufgestellt hat. Das Wetter war eher grau und durchwachsen, aber es gab genügend Rot-, Braun- und Grüntöne für mich zum Malen.

Mood of the day sketch - Iris

 

On 28th of february I sketched some of my little irises in front of my buxus hedge. It was a sunday morning and we had -1 degrees Celsius.

Am 28. Februar skizzierte ich die kleinen Iris, die in meinem Garten direkt vor der Buchshecke aufgegangen waren. Es war Sonntag Morgen und hatte -1 Grad Celsius.

A farm nearby. I used watercolour and some coloured pencils (Feb).

Ein Bauernhof in der Nähe. An diesem Tag habe ich Aquarellfarben zusammen mit Buntstiften verwendet (Feb).

Mood of the day sketch - Creek

 

 

Our little creek has a lot of water (in the end of Feb.), because the beaver dammed it. If you are a frequent reader you might know about the beaver close to my home. The little village right behind the trees are the place where I live. I just made some indication of roofs. The fast sketch is in watercolour with a little gouache here and there.

Unser kleiner Bach hat viel Wasser (Ende Feb.), denn der Bieber hat ihn gestaut. Wenn ihr regelmässig hier vorbei schaut, dann wisst ihr vielleicht, dass der Biber in der Nähe meines Hauses wohnt. Das kleine Dorf in der Ferne mit den angedeuteten Dächern ist der Ort, in dem ich wohne. Die Skizze wurde hauptsächlich mit Aquarellfarben und ein wenig Gouache gemalt.

At the railway track. Still some mist in parts of the forest this morning.

Am Bahnübergang. Noch immer hat es etwas Nebel im Wald an diesem Morgen.

Mood of the day sketches - lila Scheune in Bonolzhof

 

On Feb. 23 I made this sketch of a violet barn in Bonolzhof during one of my walks. The sun was shining and spring was in the air, although the trees did not have any leaves. The shadows in the grass and on the wall were very strong. I used gouache to bring forth the blue and violet on the brown paper.

Am 23. Februar habe ich diese Skizze einer lila Scheune in Bonolzhof gemacht. Bei meinem Spaziergang war es sonnig und es fühlte sich fast schon wie Frühling an, obwohl die Bäume noch keine Blätter hatten. Die Schatten im Gras und auf der Scheune waren sehr kontrastreich. Um das Blau und Violett etwas stärker farbig zu machen, benutzte ich Gouache, denn sonst wären die Farben auf dem braunen Papier doch etwas zu schwach.

Mood of the day sketch - Moosige Bäume

 

 

I made a sketch by Jagst river with very mossy trees. I like the nice colour contrasts in this one.

Eine Skizze von der Jagst mit einem sehr moosigen Baum. Schöne Farbkontraste.

Mood of the days sketch - Altes vergeht, Neues kommt

 

Old leaves on the ground as a symbol for old things to pass, and soon new things to come. 

Alte Blätter am Boden. Altes vergeht. Neues kommt. Nichts bleibt wie es ist.

Mood of the day sketch - Burgberg in Sichtweite

 

After having made lots of white and blue snow sketches, the landscape now looks green and brown. The temperatures are getting higher and that day I made a walk below Burgberg forest we already had 10 ° Celsius. The soil was a bit muddy, but I found a piece of wood I could sit on for this fast sketch. I sort of tried to squeeze in everything around me, therefore the fence to my right is also in the sketch, although you would never have seen it in a photo. That is the magic in art, you are free to draw and create in your own way.

Nach meinen vielen blau-weißen Schneeskizzen hat sich die Landschaft enorm verändert. Es ist wärmer geworden und die Farben der Landschaft sind nun eher grün-braun. An diesem Tag war der Boden zwar noch ziemlich matschig und es hatte 10° Celsius, aber ich brauchte Bewegung und schnappte mir mein kleines Skizzenbuch und wanderte ein Stück unterhalb des Burgbergs. Dort setzte ich mich auf ein Stück Holz (war nicht sehr bequem) und machte eine schnelle Skizze. Der Zaun war rechts von mir und eigentlich wäre er auf einem Foto nicht zu sehen, aber als Maler habe ich die Freiheit alles einzuzeichnen, was ich möchte, also habe ich eine halbe Rundumansicht gemalt.

Mood of the day sketch - Sunset

 

The evening view out of my window to the South-West on feb. 16 is the following: A very colourful sunset. (I am still behind in posting the rest of my feb. sketches)

Der Blick aus meinem Fenster am Abend des 16. Februars offenbart diesen farbenprächtigen Sonnenuntergang. (noch immer bin ich hinterher alle meine Februar-Skizzen zu posten)

Mood of the day sketch - chicken soup

 

The cold weather in mid-february made me cook a chicken soup. A few ingredients are in my fast sketch.

Das kalte Wetter im Februar war perfekt für eine heisse Hühnersuppe. Ein paar der Zutaten sind in meiner schnellen Skizze festgehalten.

Mood of the day sketch - farmers work in the woods

 

The last days of snowy weather in february where beautiful as it was sunny and the landscape had these beautiful from white to blue to violet shades. The farmers where busy working in the woods.

Mitte Februar waren die Schneetage herrlich, den wir hatten Sonnenschein und die Farben des Schnees gingen von weiss über blau nach violett. Die Bauern fuhren mit ihren Traktoren in den Wald, um Holz zu machen.

At this time in february we were still in lockdown and I took a walk every day.

Zu dieser Zeit im Februar, als wir noch immer im Lockdown waren, habe ich jeden Tag draussen eine kleine Runde gedreht.

Mood of the day sketch - Another walk in the snow

 

With posting my mood sketches I am still a bit behind, as everything needs to be met in the right order. The small group of artists from Italy, Canada, Brasil and Germany which Antonella called the "mood of the day" sketch group is very inspiring and motivating and I am always happy to get to see what is up at my friends places. I am still posting my February sketches, while we had a lot of snow.

Mood of the day sketch - Walk in the snow

 

Decided to switch from the brown sketchbook to a larger white 300 g paper this day in February, in order to be able to show the snow in all its brightness. A friend of mine said that I use mediterranean colours for the snow sketches and it is really true that in good weather the bright blue and white contrasts could be also imagined in a cityscape of greece with blue waters and white houses.

 

My sketches show the forest which is very close to my home. Here I do my snow walks during lockdown and enjoy the fresh air.

Ein weisses Papier mit 300 g ist jetzt im Februar für die Zeit mit viel Schnee möglicherweise etwas geeigneter, als mein kleines braunes Skizzenbuch mit den hellbraunen Blättern. Auf jeden Fall habe ich ein paar Waldbilder mit Schnee gemalt, um zu zeigen, wo ich meine Winterspaziergänge während des Lockdowns mache und die frische Luft in der Schneelandschaft geniesse.

Eine meiner "mood of the day" Sketch-Freunde hatte dazu angemerkt, dass ich mediterrane Farben für die Schneeskizzen nutze und ich finde den Vergleich absolut passend, denn man könnte sich unsere Winterfarben bei schönem Wetter und klar blauem Himmel auch z.B. in Griechenland vorstellen, wo das Meer und die weissen Häuser mit den blauen Fensterläden einen ähnlichen Farbeindruck bieten.

Mood of the day sketch - Gartenrotschwanz und feurige Büsche

 

My translator said this is a common redstart. We often have these around the garden. 

Ein Gartenrotschwanz für heute. Die sieht man öfters im Garten.

My next sketch shows the landscape close to my home in an evening mood. The bushes and trees are lit from behind and look as if they are on fire. 

Meine nächste Skizze zeigt die Landschaft in der Nähe meines Hauses in einer Abendstimmung. Die Büsche und Bäume werden von hinten beleuchtet und sehen aus, als ob sie brennen würden.
