For the next two days the weather forecast said it will be slightly warmer which means around zero degrees in our area. I really very much miss the sun and before Christmas a lot of things have to be done at work and at home, so let's dream of Portugal. Here is my version to cope with the cold weather and dream of sunshine with this impression of Ilha da Culatra. I used a lot of cerulean blue with my big broad brush (again the "baking brush") on a pre-wetted paper and some yellow ocre for the colour of the sand.
Die Wettervorhersage lautet: Etwas wärmer, also nur um die 0°C in unserer Gegend. Ich vermisse die Sonne und vor Weihnachten gibt es ja immer noch so viele Dinge, die in der Arbeit und auch Zuhause gemacht werden müssen, also ist es angebracht einfach mal auszubrechen und von Portugal zu träumen. Hier ist meine Version sich wieder aufzubauen und von der Sonne zu träumen, mit meiner Ansicht der Insel Culatra. Die Farbe coelinblau habe ich mit meinem breiten 6er Pinsel (schaut wie ein grosser Backpinsel aus) aufs nasse Papier aufgetragen. Für den Sand habe ich ocker verwendet.
I must say that I love this heavy Fabriano paper although I always hesitate to use it as I don't want to waste this paper with just a fast sketch. I think every artist choses thoroughly which paper to use for what purpose. This time the heavy paper for the heavy stones in the foreground was a good choice. It was worth it as the paper takes as many layers as you like to put on without getting too dark. For the extremely dark zones between the stones I used my new colour DS moonglow directly from the tube which is a bit similar to shadow violet and that I like too, but moonglow is still a bit darker. Fun to test new colours now and again.
Ich muss sagen, dass ich dieses schwere Fabriano Papier sehr schätze und obwohl ich immer zögere es zu benutzen, weil ich es nicht für irgendeine schnelle Skizze verwenden möchte, hat es sich dieses Mal gelohnt, denn die schweren Steine im Vordergrund haben sehr viele Farb-Lagen erhalten und das verträgt das Papier super ohne zu dunkel zu werden. Für die sehr dunklen Zonen zwischen den Steinen habe ich eine meiner neuen DS Farben verwendet: Moonglow, das ein wenig ähnlich dem shadow violet ist, nur etwas dunkler. Macht Spaß ab und zu neue Farben auszuprobieren.
It is really cold in Germany right now, the snowy weather is back and I am not eager to go out to sketch anymore so I tend to draw cityscapes of warmer cities such as Albufeira in Portugal. The Museum which hosts the USk exhibition til February is here on the right in the middle of Albufeira.
Es ist nun wirklich kalt und es schneit in Deutschland und man mag gar nicht mehr zum Malen raus gehen. Um davon abzulenken male ich am Liebsten Städte aus wärmeren Ländern, wie z.B. Albufeira in Portugal. Das Museum, das sich rechts dieses Platzes befindet stellt aktuell bis Februar Bilder meiner USk Freunde aus.
Pai Tomás a café at praia do vau - one of the most beautiful beaches around, and there are lots of beautiful beaches! Here we have a lookout and besides you can have good coffee and snacks. I just came back from a few days in Portugal and did some watercolour there. More to come in the next days.
Pai Thomás, ein Café an der Praia do Vau. Dieser Strand ist einer der schönsten hier, aber es gibt hier unendlich viele super Strände. Man sitzt auf einer Art Aussichtsplateau und kann guten Kaffee und Snacks bekommen. Ich bin gerade von einer Kurzreise nach Portugal zurück. Dort habe ich ein paar Aquarelle gemalt, die ich dann in den nächsten Tagen zeigen werde.

My friends just came back from Portugal a few days ago. I miss the sun and the beach.
Meine Freunde sind erst vor ein paar Tagen aus Portugal zurückgekommen. Ich vermisse die Sonne und den Strand.
On the Algarve there are waves too... for the beaches and cliffs you could use every kind of red and yellow...
Auch an der Algarve gibt es Wellen...für Strände und Felsen kann man von rot bis gelb alle Farben dafür verwenden...
Along the beach there is a nice walkway which leads to the Fort of Santa Catarina and the harbour of Portimao. There are always Joggers around. In the afternoon there are beautiful shades on the walkway, which makes it even more interesting for me to paint this corner.
Entlang des Strandes gibt es einen schönen Weg, der bis zum Fort Santa Catarina und dem Hafen von Portimao führt. Es sind dort oft Jogger unterwegs. Nachmittags werfen die Palmen schöne Schatten auf den Weg, die natürlich für mich zum Malen besonders interessant sind.

Wieder eine Meereslandschaft mit Hotels und Restaurants linkerhand und dem Strand rechts. Ich habe das Aquarell an einem bewölkten Tag gemalt und es waren kaum Menschen unterwegs...
This is the view from a hotel roof terrace. On the terrace you always have a fine seabreeze and a view over gardens, houses and the sea. The seagulls often come very close and it is a wonderful passtime to have some coffee and sit and look.
Dies ist der Blick von einer Hotel-Dachterrasse. Auf der Terrasse weht einem immer eine Meeresbriese um die Nase und man hat einen schönen Blick auf Gärten, Häuser und das Meer. Die Seemöwen kommen oft sehr nah und es ist ein toller Zeitvertreib dort Kaffee zu trinken, zu sitzen und einfach nur zu schauen.
The waves along the coastal walkway can be real big. There is a wonderful wooden walkway close to Carvoeiro.
Die Wellen entlang des Küstenpfades können tatsächlich recht groß sein. Oberhalb von Carvoeiro gibt es einen schönen Holzsteg entlang des Meeres.
The sandy beaches are beautiful and the rocks throw long shadows - perfect to paint.
Die Sandstrände an der Algarve sind wunderbar und die Felsen werfen lange Schatten - perfekt zum Malen.
In Luz there is a beautiful walkway overlooking the ocean.
In Luz gibt es eine wunderschöne Promenade, von der aus man einen guten Blick auf das Meer hat.
Today another subject: A small watercolour sketch with a lot of wet in wet painting around the boats (in Portimao harbour). While you are in the harbour area you hear lots of familiar noises of the water, the birds, the ships...you could sit there forever and watch what is going on around you...and a lot of cool things to paint everywhere.
Heute mal wieder ein ganz anderes Thema: Eine kleine Aquarell-Skizze mit naß-in-naß gemalter Wasserfläche um die Boote herum (die im Hafen von Portimao liegen). Wenn man sich im Hafen befindet hört man viele verschiedene Geräusche: Das Wasser, das an die Boote klatscht, die Möwen, die Masten und Fahnen...man könnte da für immer sitzen und schauen, was so um einen herum passiert...und es gibt unendlich viele Motive zum Malen.

Again some sketches inspired
by my visit to the Algarve - so this is part II.
This time it is the region around Portimao, Algarve in Portugal.
Again I
took some old, heavy paper (600 g), sketched with a pencil first. Then I watered the
bigger shapes and waited a bit before I went on it with the colour. I had a lot of fun with it and also tried to do some people and an early morning watercolour of the beautiful beach.
Hier sind nochmal Skizzen, die mich an meine Reise an die Algarve erinnern. Dies ist also der zweite Teil und dieses Mal die Region um Portimao an der Algarve, Portugal.
Wieder hab ich das schwere Papier verwendet und mit dem Bleistift vorgezeichnet. Dann mit Wasser benetzt und kurz gewartet, bevor ich die Farbe aufgetragen habe. Das hat Spaß gemacht und ich hab weiter unten auch Personen gemalt sowie ein Bild mit einem Sonnenaufgang am Strand.
