Sketchtrip to Karlsbad - Day 3

 

On this sheet you can see part of our room and the hotel bathrobe, which was very useful for sauna and pool. In the upper part you can see that I tried Svickova which seems to be a traditional dish here in Czech Republic.

 

Later I sketched my friend, but there is not the best likeness. 

On our way back home by car, we drove through a winter wonderland with lots of snow, where I used my granulating colours in the sky.

Sketchtrip to Karlsbad, Day 2

 

It was the coldest weekend we had so far this winter with about minus 10° C. We dressed like snowmen and walked the city. At our most beloved bakery we made a stop to taste and buy Christmas cookies for sure with a good espresso. 

It was impossible to sketch outside, so I just sketched inside.

Then another walk through the city of Karlsbad with our next destination in mind which was famous Café Pupp. They have wonderful tarts and coffee selections so I had to sketch my cake plate on the black marble table.

It is called Dort Pupp and tasted delicious. Then I did a fast portrait sketch of one of my friends.

 

Afterwards we went to drink the healthy water and walk as a healthy treatment ;)

Sketchtrip to Karlsbad - Day 1

 

We arrived in the afternoon and first had a lovely meal at Narodak which is also known for good beer. The bar/restaurant was interesting to sketch. This is the first page in my new Koval Sketchbook, from my friend Tom. It was the first test of this 300 gms very smooth fabriano paper he used and I must say that it takes the watercolour perfectly and several layers are possible.

 

Sketchbook Karlsbad as a Video

Made another Video of the sketchbook filled with drawings from Karlsbad in order to have a memory of the good times there. All my Karlsbad drawings are combined in a 30 seconds video. Please enjoy and if you like it do not hesitate to give me a like.

Von meiner Zeit in Karlsbad habe ich ein 30 sec. Video gemacht. Die Zeichnungen sollen für mich natürlich auch eine Art Andenken sein, an die guten Zeiten, die ich dort verbracht habe. Viel Spass beim Ansehen und gebt mir gerne ein "like", wenn es euch gefällt. Danke.

Sketchbook Karlsbad - Way home

On our way home I did a sketch just to make it less boring as we went on autobahn and not through the beautiful forest. I used a violet watercolourable pencil and a black normal one.

Auf unserem Heimweg habe ich eine Strassenskizze gemalt, nur um etwas Zeit zu überbrücken, denn der Weg auf der Autobahn war so viel langweiliger, als der Weg durch den verwunschenen Tschechischen Wald. Für die Zeichnung habe ich einen Aquarellstift in lila verwendet sowie einen schwarzen normalen Stift.

Sketchbook Karlsbad - Café Pupp

Our last day has come and we again went through town, visiting the beautiful buildings and drinking the healthy water. The thirst of coffee (after all the healthy stuff...) and the beautiful surroundings of Pupp Café with the friendly waiters and waitresses made our decision easy where to go. From former visits I can say that the coffee is excellent here. 

Out the sketchbook and here we go again...at the desk the waiters got their cakes and coffees prepared by persons behind the desk and at that place they stopped for a while  -  a good drawing subject for limited palette drawing.

Unser letzter Tag ist angebrochen und wieder waren wir in der Stadt unterwegs und schauten uns nocheinmal die wunderschönen Gebäude an und tranken das gesunde Heilwasser. Der Wunsch nach Kaffee kam dann aber auch (...nach all dem gesunden Zeug...) und die schöne Umgebung im Café Pupp sowie die netten Kellnerinnen und Kellner dort machten es uns einfach dort einzukehren. Von früheren Besuchen weiss ich, dass der Café dort besonders gut ist. 

Das Skizzenbuch musste ich natürlich auch wieder zücken, denn an der Theke hatten die Kellner immer etwas Wartezeit, bis ihre Bestellung von fleissigen Händen hinter dem Tresen zusammengestellt wurde und das war das perfekte Motiv für eine schnelle Zeichnung mit eingeschränkter Farbpalette.

Sketchbook Karlsbad - The Bar

If you stroll through the city of Karlsbad in the late evening - there is nearly no one - it is calm and quiet in winter time. We decided to have a drink in a club and listen to live music. My sketchbook always on hand I sketched in the velvety darkness of the club.

Wenn man spät Abends durch Karlsbad läuft ist fast niemand mehr unterwegs. Alles ist ruhig und friedlich im Winter. Wir wollten aber noch etwas unternehmen und gingen in einen Club mit Live Musik. Mein Skizzenbuch ist immer dabei und so malte ich ein eher seltsam undefiniertes Bild aus den samtigen Tiefen des dunklen Clubsessels heraus.

Sketchbook Karlsbad - Cafe Perla

Stop at Café Perla. In the city they have a Market. Now we are all tired from the big city tour. It is time to relax with something to eat and drink and chat at Café Perla with its panoramic windows towards the old Lazne V wellness centre. Need to get out my sketchbook and draw the view from my position by the window.

Zwischenstopp im Café Perla. In der Stadt ist Markt und nach einer ausgiebigen Stadttour sind wir alle müde. Da kommt eine Einkehr ins Café Perla mit den grossen Fenstern und dem schönen Blick auf das grosse alte Bad - Lazne V - gerade recht. Wir essen und trinken erstmal etwas und ich zücke wieder mein Skizzenbuch und male, was ich von meiner Position am Fenster aus sehe.

Sketchbook Karlsbad - Lazne V - Steinfigur

When you go to Karlsbad, for sure you drink or bath in the very healthy water, but what would be a stay there without a health treatment like a massage or the like? 

I decided to have a massage. Ready from my treatment I was waiting for my friend Dani who had the next appointment at the massage room. Time to draw. There was a stone figure I already saw when entering the building and I sat beside this bird-like figure and began to draw. The drawing was made with a waterproof creatacolor pen and the rest is a violet watercolour pen and ultramarine watercolour on top.

Wenn man nach Karlsbad fährt, dann trinkt man normalerweise auch das gesunde Heilwasser, oder man badet darin. 

Ich habe mich aber für eine Massage entschieden und war gerade damit fertig. Meine Freundin Dani ist nun dran. Jetzt habe ich ein wenig Zeit zum Malen, solange ich auf sie warte.

Bereits beim Betreten des Gebäudes ist mir vorhin eine Steinfigur mit Flügeln aufgefallen. Die wollte ich malen. Ich saß direkt daneben in einem gemütlichen Sessel und machte die Vorzeichnung mit einem schwarzen Cretacolor Stift Nr. 2 und ein wenig mit einem violetten wasservermalbaren Stift. Danach kam dann die ultramarine Aquarellfarbe.

Sketchbook Karlsbad - Girl with funny cap

In the breakfast room of our hotel there are all nations in peace together. Some still sleep, some look very different from european people and some have funny clothing, like this girl who always came to breakfast with a funny cap. (bad hair day?) Today she had two tufts to each side and before I had my breakfast I had to draw her. Maybe a new trend. It was easy to capture her as she was sitting still and stared at her phone while sipping her morning coffee. 

Im Frühstücksraum unseres Hotels sind alle möglichen Nationen friedlich zusammen. Manche sind noch schläfrig, manchen sieht man an, dass sie von weit herkommen und manche haben lustige Kleidung an, wie dieses Mädchen, die immer wieder mit anderen lustigen Mützen zum Frühstück kam (zuerst dachte ich an "bad hair day"). Heute hatte sie auf jeden Fall zwei Puschel an der Mütze und deshalb nahm ich sofort mein Skizzenbuch zur Hand und malte sie, bevor ich mit dem Frühstück begann. Vielleicht ist das ein neuer Trend: Puschelmütze mit zwei Puscheln? Auf jeden Fall war es sehr einfach sie zu malen, denn sie bewegte sich kaum und starrte unablässig auf ihr Handy, während sie ihren Kaffee trank.

Sketchbook Karlsbad - portait sketch of T.

I already tried to capture T's portrait several times and every time I do that I come a bit closer in likeness, I guess. I am quite satisfied with that one.
Here is the photo of my portrayed person. Btw. I changed the colour of the sweater.

T. habe ich schon mehrmals versucht zu portraitieren, aber das Ergebnis ist immer wieder verschieden. Heute bin ich ganz zufrieden mit dem Resultat. Hier ist das Vergleichsfoto. Die Farbe des Pullis ist etwas anders.

Sketchbook Karlsbad - The bakery

We found a nice bakery, about 300m from the big bus terminal, which had good coffee, cake and excellent christmas cookies. Everything was delicious and I had to do a fast sketch of the interior with the bakery lady in the red shirt. The bakery was traditionally decorated in green and red. For the drawing I used some watercolour pens and for painting I had my usual watercolour travel box. 

Wir fanden eine nette Bäckerei, ca. 300 m entfernt vom grossen Busterminal. Dort gab es guten Kaffee, Kuchen und sehr gutes Weihnachtsgebäck. Alles schmeckte prima und ich machte noch eine schnelle Skizze des Verkaufsraums mit der Bäckerin im roten T-Shirt. Die Bäckerei war sehr traditionell dekoriert mit grünen Zweigen und roten Kugeln und Weihnachtssternen. Für die Zeichnung habe ich Aquarellstifte und zum Malen dann mein normales Reise-Aquarellset verwendet.

 

Sketchbook Karlsbad - drawing in town

As we arrived around midday, the weather was mild and we first walked a bit towards the city centre as our room was not yet ready. No problem, the city is so beautiful and there is much to see and do (...or draw?...my drawing is a bit fast and wonky and the fingers were cold, so I had to hurry).

Als wir um die Mittagszeit ankamen war das Wetter trüb, aber mild. Zuerst machten wir eine Spaziergang in der Stadt, denn unser Zimmer war noch nicht bezugsfertig, aber kein Problem, es gibt hier so viel zu sehen und zu probieren (...oder zu skizzieren?...mein Bild ist etwas wackelig, denn ich musste schnell machen und meine Finger waren kalt).

Novemberwochenende in Karlsbad

Just came back from a too short November week-end in Karlsbad in Czech Republic. Great city, great people, great food, rainy weather and as always not enough time to draw. I drew the pencil in mid-town on one of those white benches under the roof in front of one of the collonades and threw some watercolour on it later in the hotel. It was an evening impression with alreday Christmas lights everywhere.  We were there with good friends and a lot of fun. The cold weather was no problem as there are lots of warm springs, we had a warm pool and could go to sauna as well. For this drawing I tried my new brownish ink pencils and yes they don't bleed with watercolour on top which is great. These are the pencils I used:

Bin gerade von einem zu kurzen Novemberwochenende in Karlsbad, Tschechien zurückgekommen. Tolle Stadt, coole Leute, super Essen, Regenwetter und wie immer zuwenig Zeit zum malen. Ich malte mit den Stiften auf einer der weissen Bänke sitzend unter dem Vordach der Kollonaden und hab dann später ein wenig Aquarellfarbe im Hotel draufgeworfen. Hatte ja nicht viel Zeit. Es war eine Abendimpression, schon mit voller Weihnachtsbeleuchtung.  Wir waren dort mit guten Freunden und es hat mir richtig gut gefallen. Das kalte Wetter war kein Problem, denn es gibt ja die heissen Quellen, wir hatten einen warmen Pool und konnten auch in die Sauna gehen. Für dieses Bild habe ich mal Tuschestifte verwendet, die ich mir kürzlich gekauft hatte. Sie bluten nicht aus und man kann mit Aquarell direkt drübergehen. Eigentlich hatte ich sie fürs Portraitzeichnen gekauft, denn ich dachte die Brauntöne könnten dafür geeignet sein...

Want some Coffee?

Karlsbad review: A lot of detail in this one. We sat outside to try this fresh roasted coffee of the day. The Café inside is quite unique with its hip furniture. I did this one from a photo I took, as there was no time left to draw on site. Below you see my underpainting in yellow ocre.

Karlsbad Rückblick: Viele kleine Details in dieser Skizze. Wir saßen draußen und testeten den frisch gerösteten Café des Tages. Das Bild hab ich von einem Foto skizziert, da leider keine Zeit mehr war direkt vor Ort zu malen. Unten meine Vorzeichnung mit erstem Farbauftrag in ocker.

Karlsbad, T. G. Masaryka

According to an old photo in Wikivoyage this house is situated in Kaiser Franz Josef Straße in Karlsbad. I do not speak Czech so I dont know who or what is T. G. Masaryka indicated on a red sign on the right side of the building. This drawing is part of my colour test as I bought two ready mixed grey tones in order to compare them. Usually I mix my greys by myself, but I liked the colours by the colour chart, so I thought of trying them out. 

The first one is Daniel Smith Shadow Violet and the other one is Sennelier Kaltgrau 707. The DS colour is kind of an effect colour that varies from blueish to violet grey with nice granulation effects (see above). The colour can be used in several washes and still has this nice granulating effect. It still has kind of a transparent consistency. The Sennelier Kaltgrau I will check out tomorrow so stay tuned...

Laut Wikivoyage ist das Haus aus meiner Skizze in der Franz Josef Straße in Karlsbad. Da ich nicht Tschechisch spreche, weiss ich nicht was T.G. Masaryka bedeutet (das steht auf einem Schild auf der rechten Seite des Gebäudes). Meine Skizze soll der erste Teil eines Farbtests zwischen zwei fertig gemischten Grautönen sein.  Normalerweise mische ich meine Grautöne selbst, aber da mir die beiden Farben auf der Farbkarte so gut gefallen haben, hab ich mir gedacht: Die muss ich ausprobieren.

Die erste Farbe ist eine Daniel Smith Shadow Violet und die andere ist ein Sennelier Kaltgrau 707. Oben habe ich die DS Farbe verwendet, die als Effektfarbe von bläulich nach violettgrau changiert und schöne Granulierungseffekte aufweist (siehe oben). Die Farbe kann man sogar mehrmals auftragen und trotzdem granuliert sie und changiert sie die Farben. 
Die Farbe bleibt dennoch lasierend. Das Sennelier Kaltgrau werde ich morgen ausprobieren, also schaut wieder rein...
