Yesterday again we had this so called "everything-is-possibly-thursday", which means that after work my friend and I went to a nice Café and sat outside (with beautiful weather) to have good coffee and cake. This is so relaxing, nearly like holidaying.
Gestern war mal wieder so ein "Alles-ist-möglich-Donnerstag", an dem wir es uns nach der Arbeit gut gehen ließen. Das Wetter passte und wir konnten sogar draussen sitzen. Sehr entspannend, fast wie im Urlaub.
It is portrait season. Still try to portrait as much as possible. Family and friends are getting used to it lately. Great that this week-end I have some leisure time to draw.
Es ist Portrait Saison und es ist gut so oft wie möglich zu üben. Freunde und Familie gewöhnen sich schon langsam daran. Klasse, dass ich nach dieser arbeitsamen Woche am Wochenende wieder etwas Zeit zum Malen habe.
So honoured having received a song from Manfred via electronic mail during his creative pause while painting. I did not do him justice with my drawing but a certain likeness is there. At least it is a direct watercolour without any linework by pencil.
Fühle mich sehr geehrt, dass ich ein Ständchen von Manfred auf elektronischem Wege erhalten habe, der gerade eine Kreativpause vom Malen machte. Ich habe ihn natürlich nicht ganz genau getroffen, aber eine gewisse Ähnlichkeit ist doch da. Auf jeden Fall ist es wieder ein direkt mit dem Pinsel gemaltes Aquarell ohne vorherige Bleistiftzeichnung.
This one was made with the help of a photo reference. I tried out new vibrant tube colours. I will do some more tests and tell you about it.
Die Grundlage dieses Bildes war ein Foto. Ich hab neue Tuben-Farben ausprobiert. Ich komme nach ein paar Tests auf dieses Thema zurück.
Last Sunday we were at Rathaus Rot am See to meet and greet at our Montagsmaler group exhibition. I thought I could sketch a lot during that time, but many people came to visit and I just did a quick unfinished sketch in the end of the day. It shows the Foyer of the Rathaus. Many thanks to our nice visitors.
Am letzten Sonntag waren wir im Rathaus Rot am See, um die Leute zu begrüssen, die unsere Gruppen-Ausstellung (Montagsmaler) besuchten. Ich brachte mein Malzeug mit und dachte ich könne malen, aber es kamen viele Leute, wir hatten gute Gespräche und nur ganz am Ende konnte ich noch ein wenig Farbe aufs Papier bringen. Die Skizze des Foyers ist nicht ganz fertig geworden, aber seht selbst (Doppelseite unten). Vielen Dank an alle Besucher.

My reflections on this challenge are the following:
Am very happy to have practiced people although I just did faces and not the whole body - I save this for next time.
I did less people than I expected due to time pressure. But it is not about pressure - it is all about fun, so this is not important.
Did the portraits with solely direct watercolour and loved it as for me it is faster and more fluently.
Found out that transparent watercolour hues are more suited for skin tones. In the end I used mainly a mix of alizarin and ocre with yellows and oranges for the skin. For the hair and darker parts the more opaque colours turned out to be good like Vandyke or Paynes Grey.
Meine Überlegungen zu dieser Herausforderung waren folgende:
Es hat grossen Spass gemacht Menschen zu malen. Ich habe nur Gesichter gemalt und nicht die ganze Person - das halte ich mir für das nächste Mal offen.
Leider hatte ich nicht genug Zeit noch mehr Menschen zu malen, aber der Spaß zählt und alles Andere ist egal.
Die Portraits sind direkt mit Aquarellfarbe gemalt, was mich schneller und lockerer macht.
Habe herausgefunden, dass die transparenteren Farben besser für Hauttöne geeignet sind. Am Ende habe ich meine Mischungen für die Hauttöne hauptsächlich aus Alizarin und Ocker sowie einigen Gelb- und Orangetönen hergestellt. Für die Haare und die dunkleren Partien fand ich deckendere Farben ganz sinnvoll wie z.B. Vandyke oder Paynes Grey.

The week went so unbelievably fast and so far I did 8 people. All my watercolours from this week were made without prior pencil drawing as I believe this makes for faster and more lose drawings.
Die Woche ging wieder viel zu schnell um und ich konnte bisher erst acht Personen-Bilder machen. Alle Bilder in dieser Woche habe ich ohne vorherige Bleistiftzeichnung gemalt, denn ich glaube, dass ich dadurch schneller und auch lockerer bin.

This is how it should be. Sitting in the Café and drawing what is in front of you. It could not get better... happy weekend.
So sollte es öfters sein: Im Café sitzen und malen, was man vor sich sieht. Es kann kaum besser kommen... schönes Wochenende.
My friend Silvia was very patient with me while I drew her and she said that it would be nice to be drawn once in a while. This is so great and fun for me as I would like to prepare somehow for the challenge "#oneweek100people2018" which will be from March 5 to 9. I am sure I will not be able to do 100 people, but if I can do at least 10 portraits or the like in one week I would be quite happy. We will see.
This watercolour was made without prior pencil lines as a direct watercolour. Great fun, thanks Silvia (details on the author on facebook: Silvia Herzog).
Meine Freundin Silvia war sehr geduldig mit mir, während ich sie malte und sie sagte, dass ich sie gerne ab und zu malen könne. Das ist eine tolle Übung für mich für die Challenge "#oneweek100people2018", die vom 5. bis 9 März stattfindet. Ich bin sicher, dass ich keine 100 Personen malen werde, aber wenn ich es schaffe evtl. 10 Leute in einer Woche zu malen, bin ich glücklich.
Das obere Portrait wurde ohne Bleistiftlinien direkt mit Aquarellfarben gemalt. Hat grossen Spass gemacht, danke Silvia (Details über die Autorin auf facebook: Silvia Herzog).
On the last "everything-is-possible-Thursday" I quit work earlier in the afternoon and went to Vellberg with my friend Silvia Herzog for a chat at the Schweden Café. (Silvie is an author of fantasy novels). It was a brillant and fun conversation. I ordered one cake to eat and one to draw and the Swedish owner of the Café said that nobody ordered in such strange way before.
I ended up in drawing both delicious cakes with direct watercolour while my patient friend Silvie told me about her new book. We chatted so much on her experiences as an author while in the meantime I tried to do her portrait which I will post tomorrow.

Am letzten "Alles-ist-möglich-Donnerstag" habe ich die Arbeit etwas früher beendet und bin mit meiner Freundin Silvia Herzog nach Vellberg gefahren, um im schwedischen Café einen Kaffee zu trinken. (Silvie ist Autorin von Fantasy-Romanen). Wir waren beide gut drauf und ich bestellte einen Kuchen zum Essen und einen zum Malen. Die schwedische Inhaberin sagte mir, dass noch nie jemand so bei ihr bestellt habe.
War ja klar, dass ich dann doch beide Kuchen direkt mit Aquarellfarbe gemalt habe, während mir die geduldige Silvie von ihrem neuen Buch erzählte. Sie sprach von Ihren Erfahrungen als Autorin und ich malte sie dabei. Das Bild gibt es dann morgen.

Übrigens: Das Schweden Café in Vellberg hat von Do bis So immer von 14°° - 18°° Uhr geöffnet.
This broccoli was in the fridge and will go into my todays light meal.
Der Broccoli war in meinem Kühlschrank und wird sich in meinem heutigen Mittagessen wiederfinden.
My espresso machine is the most used machine in my household. I love it and if it does not work I have a serious problem. I thought I needed to finally draw this beloved beauty.
Meine Espresso Maschine ist die Maschine in meinem Haushalt, die am häufigsten benutzt wird. Sie ist toll und wenn sie einmal nicht geht habe ich ein schwerwiegendes Problem. Jetzt musste ich diese Schönheit endlich mal zeichnen.
A few steps away from my house there is this small bridge which leads mainly to nowhere (to a field). With new snow on it it looks extremely clean and untouched which is great for a winter watercolour. For the blue tones I used manganese blue and a bit of violet.
Ein paar Schritte von meinem Haus entfernt liegt eine kleine Brücke die eigentlich nirgends hinführt (zu einem Feld). Mit ein wenig frischem Schnee schaut es dort so klar und unberührt aus, was sehr gut geeignet für ein Winter-Aquarell ist. Als Blautöne habe ich hauptsächlich Manganblau und Violett verwendet.
The festive days are ahead and the fact that it is Saturday makes it easier for me to take a bit of time for sketching in between the turbulent preparation for Christmas. This drawing is from a few days ago, when we still had snow!
Die Feiertage liegen vor uns und dass heute Samstag ist macht es mir leichter während der turbulenten Vorbereitungszeit für Weihnachten noch ein wenig Zeit zum Malen abzuknapsen. Dieses Bild ist von vor ein paar Tagen, als wir tatsächlich noch Schnee hatten!
Winter is here and a very fast drawing is still possible somehow, but the use of watercolour for me is impossible with those temperatures so I do that at home. The landscape in Hohelohe is extremely beautiful with snow and a bit of sunshine.
Der Winter hat uns im Griff und draussen vorzeichnen geht zwar noch, aber die Aquarellfarbe trägt man dann doch besser Zuhause auf. Die Landschaft ist so schön in Hohenlohe, besonders wenn ein wenig Schnee liegt und die Sonne sich zeigt.

Sunday sketching about two weeks ago on a golden October day. I had about 1,5 hours of relaxed drawing and watercolouring.What a treat!
Sonntags-Sketching vor etwa zwei Wochen an einem goldenen Oktobertag. Ich hatte ca. 1,5 h entspannte Zeit zum zeichnen und aquarellieren. Was für ein Vergnügen!
Drawing at Wasserturm in Crailsheim-Altenmünster was real fun although it was quite cold that day and the sun did not show up. For the tower top I used the funny DS shadow violet (it is a grey tone with nice granulation effects I tested some time ago) and the dark green colour is also a new one for me from DS: deep sap green and I love it. (There is a pub inside of the Tower right now as it is out of service for the trains)
I found another close by very cool location to draw at, so stay tuned for further sketches from there...
Malen am Wasserturm in Crailsheim-Altenmünster war wirklich sehr schön, obwohl es eher kalt war und die Sonne sich leider nicht zeigte. Für den oberen Teil des Turmes habe ich die Farbe DS shadow violet verwendet (das ist der Grauton mit den Granulierungs-Effekten, den ich vor kurzem getestet habe) und auch der dunkle Grünton ist für mich eine neue Farbe, nämlich DS deep sap green und ich finde die Farbe toll. (Im Wasserturm befindet sich übrigens heutzutage ein Lokal)
Ausserdem habe ich eine coole Location zum Malen ganz in der Nähe erkundet, also mal sehen was ich euch bald noch für Skizzen aus dieser Gegend von Crailsheim zeigen kann...
The centre of the bath culture with the church St. Maria-Magdalena in the middle of Karlsbad. As the view is so great from the balcony of Café Elefant, we went there a second time. The weather allowed to sit ouside so we had much more fun to watch people going by our nosy place.
Das Zentrum der Bäderkultur mit der Kirche St. Maria-Magdalena inmitten von Karlsbad. Da der Blick vom Balkon des Café Elefant aus so gut ist, sind wir ein weiteres Mal dorthin zum Kaffeetrinken (und Malen!) gegangen. Das Wetter meinte es gut mit uns, so dass wir draussen auf unserem neugierigen Platz sitzen konnten, um den Leuten beim Flanieren zuzusehen.
We made a walk through Karlsbad. Cool thing: The Triathlon World Cup was held in the streets of the city that week-end. Very athletic bikers and runners came by. The organization was perfect and it was a great athmosphere. After these "athletic games" we needed a coffee, of course with a "view", so we went to Café Elefant which has a very nice balcony where you could overlook the main street with the river and the beautiful old houses around.
Wir machten einen Spaziergang durch Karlsbad und entdeckten, dass gerade an diesem Wochenende der Triathlon World Cup in den Straßen der Stadt abgehalten wurde. Die Sportler kamen direkt an uns vorbei. Die Organisation war perfekt und die Athmosphäre super. Nach diesem athletischen Event brauchten wir dringend einen Kaffee und natürlich sollte es ein "Café mit gutem Ausblick" sein, deshalb gingen wir ins Café Elefant, das einen Balkon im ersten OG hat, von dem aus man die Hauptstraße mit Fluss und die schönen alten Häuser direkt im Blick hat.
