What I have been doing lately... Was ich in letzter Zeit so gemacht habe...
Hi guys, did not have much time to post lately. In the meantime I was busy with the exhibition of our Bartensteiner Kreis and giving portrait classes in Crailsheim and Gründelhardt.
My full day intensive workshops are all done with direct Demos and step by step tutoring, each time with different subjects and focuses. You will learn all about skin colours, shadowing, mixing, different techniques, hair textures and bright luminous creation as well as wet-in-wet and dry brush application.

Calabria again...jippieee!
So much behind in posting, therefore here is one of my favourite views from the Coastline. Love this view.
In the meantime I flew back to Calabria twice, therefore here are some of my favourite Calabria sketches I made there at my earlier visit:

Watercolour Portrait Sketches
I still had half a sheet left so I painted another guy right next to the lady. A process reel of both paintings can be seen down in my insta feed, if you are interested in seeing how I painted them. Both were done wet-in-wet in one go.
If you would like to learn this technique, check into my classes this November and December (see side bar).

Sketching with USk Madeira
We met at Ponta do Sol for a wonderful sunny day of sketching on the Island of Madeira. My friend Rui had organized the official meeting again. After the first sketch directly by the sea we made the throwdown in the lawn in front of a hotel.
Then we went to the Old Pharmacy, which is a place to eat and we could sit outside for lunch. The weather was great. I sketched three of my fellow sketchers while waiting for the meal.
Then we went uphill to a small chapel with a very beautiful lookout. From there we could see the rooftops of the houses below and of course the sea in front of us.
Here is the full spread:
Later I sketched the Ponte (bridge) from a café.
I forgot to photograph the last throwdown, but there are some of my films and photos in my Insta feed, if you are interested. Thank you to Rui and USk Madeira for these great memories.
Here come some of my sketches from different locations on the Island
Then another one from Garajau
and some other sketchbook entries:

Watercolour portrait sketch...a Boticelli Model
"This is a Boticelli-like looking person"... is what I thought as I saw this model for the first time. The floral background was an idea I had when I was in floral painting mood lately. Thank you to Judith for making this painting fun happen.
If you would like to learn how to paint a portrait in watercolour don't miss my next workshop at VHS in Crailsheim:
Next full day portrait workshop is on Saturday 01.06.24, 10 - 16°°.

Watercolour Portrait Sketch
Sunday morning portrait painting. I made a hyperlapse process video of it which can be seen on Insta @bettina_draws. That was a fabulous start to my day.
I worked very loose and did not stick too much to accuracy. This procedure turned out to be a good way for me to make short sketches wet-in-wet.
A colourful start to the day. The Model is Soane Ara and the reference is from my friend Judith and her portraitchallenge.

Watercolour Portrait Sketch
Here comes another sketch on toned paper. I liked the hat which suits him well and of course the intense look.
Still three papers on the block so I got some more on the 200 gms toned paper till it is gone. Needs a lot of colour layers to get at least a bit of contrast, but it is quite nice to try.
Happy sketching, everybody.

More portrait sketching on toned paper
Really enjoy this brownish paper in the meantime. Very suitable for fast watercolour sketching. This person looks very much alike the prompt of jyportraitchallenge and I am superhappy with it.
More of these... just for the fun of it.
Happy painting.

Portrait Sketching on toned paper
Back to portrait sketching. Still had an A4 block of toned paper, 200 gms which I initially bought for Urban Sketching, but wanted to use it up now as I would like to concentrate on larger formats.
I really liked to sketch with that paper, although it warps a little as it is thinner than my usual paper and it needs more layers to take enough colour.
The models I am painting are from my friend at jyportraitchallenge. Thanks to Judith.
If you would like to learn how to paint people/portraits, join my portrait class.
Easy skin mixes, shadowing, step-by-step painting, tips and tricks.

Back to Calabria
I am back to Calabria and it feels like coming home. During our breakfast we still can see the fires we already saw yesterday evening. The next village is in danger, but after several flights of the firefighters airplane the fires are extinguished. The stunt flight action is over. Good for the people. Next night we saw the spectacle again on the TV.
Had a few more minutes to sketch the flowers on our balcony...
...and part of the house...before it began to rain...
we fled into a beach bar and I began to make a study of the ocean water which did not turn out to my liking...
Ciao from Calabria. Hope I did not forget any sketch...
oh yes, I forgot one ocean study from my balcony which I like, because the water looks agitated due to the wonderful blooming effect of the watercolours.

Lipari
Sketched at Lipari harbour. The ship is one of the ships that provision the island with all kind of goods and transports the garbage away.
Many times during the day you could see the different ferries coming and going and it never gets boring here and it is a paradise for sketchers who like to sketch different types of ships.
We made a lot of walks and came by a caper factory which made me sketch the stadiums of capers. First the fruit = caper, then the flower and later the cucunci which is eatable as well.
Then the lemon is very important in Sicily. We are on a Sicilian Island!
Plus I can see a few pomegranate plants here which I really think have spectacular fruits.
There is a long promenade with a beach in front close to the main harbour and I sketched one of the lovely painted boats. Here comes my whole spread:
Then there is also a castle hill with churches, castle and very ancient graves...
The upper sketch is on one of the hightest points of the castle.
And here comes the way up. The beautiful building in the back is a church.
More of the story in a different post...stay tuned...

Sketching on Lipari Island - Sicily
After a very fast boat ride with the traghetto from Reggio di Calabria we arrived at the Sicilian Island of Lipari. There was a harbour for large boats and after wandering the city of Lipari we found another harbour on the other side of the city.
We had a lovely appartment in the city centre directly by the harbour and from our balcony I had a view.
The Island could be explored either by foot or by Minibus.
There are a few spiaggias to be reached by this bus, that rides many times a day.
The Stromboli volcano can be seen from here and a lot of boats are sailing.
Then we went further to visit a beach with a closed factory which looks like if the working people just had gone into small pause...could have stayed there forever.
Great atmosphere in this place and a wonderful beach, there is even a little kiosk in this remote place, which was not open that day.
Maybe one of my preferred sketching places on the island. Just awesome relaxing...
End of part one...to be continued
