Let's get back to other things...out of the harbour into the open sea. The sky was cloudy that Sunday in St. Gilles, but the weather was nice enough for a cruise. Another oil painting today.

Today an small oil painting: Fishing in the harbour entrance seems to be a common sport of elder men in France. The women sit in groups behind in their folding chairs and chat.
Heute ein kleines Ölbild: Fischen an der Hafeneinfahrt ist wohl ein verbreiteter Sport von älteren Männern in Frankreich. Die Frauen sitzen in Grüppchen mit ihren Klappstühlen dahinter und plaudern.
A fishing boat in France which is on its way back to the harbour. I did this in oil on board which is a rare fun in between my watercolour addiction...you have to think opposite of watercolour which is working light to dark. In oils you work dark to light.
Ein französisches Fischerboot ist auf seinem Weg zurück zum Hafen. Dies ist ein Ölbild, das ich zwischen meinen häufigeren Aquarellen gemacht habe. Das ist auch spassig, nur muss man umdenken, weil beim Ölmalen von dunkel nach hell gearbeitet wird und beim Aquarell genau anders herum.
This is an oil I did plein air. I started with my bike, painting gear and hat and sat in the sun for hours. It was a nice adventure and I found this quiet spot overlooking a valley in Frankenhardt. I had a good time.
Dieses Ölbild hab ich draussen gemalt. Ich startete mit Fahrrad, Malzeug und Hut und saß für einige Stunden in der Sonne und malte. Es war mal wieder ein nettes Abenteuer, denn ich fand diesen ruhigen Ort, von dem aus man ein kleines Tal in Frankenhardt überschauen konnte. Ein gelungener Tag.

Today again the Atlantic Ocean. The sand is nearly white. I used a skin tone for it, otherwhise the impression would have been too cold for a beach scene.
Heute wieder der Atlantik. Der Sand ist tatsächlich sehr sehr hell. Ich habe einen Hautton verwendet, damit das Bild nicht zu kühl wirkt.

On the Atlantic Coast the weather is often very rough and windy. I like that.

This seascape is one of my favourite because the whole situation was really that colourful after the heavy storm that raged...

The fields are not yet as colourful as in this painting, but it feels like spring is around the corner...
So schön bunt sind die Felder momentan noch nicht, aber der Frühling kommt sicher bald...
These are some white and blue striped beach cabins on the plage de St. Jean de Monts. It is the view from the Promenade above. Here I made an ocre underpainting before starting the actual painting.
Es gibt ein paar blau-weiss gestreifte Strandkabinen am Strand von St. Jean de Monts. Blick von der Promenade aufs Meer. Das Bild habe ich zuerst mit einem Ockerton untermalt und dann erst die anderen Farben aufgetragen.

Bourgogne is a beautiful region in France. It is the place where the famous Dijon mustard and good wines are made. I'd like to show you three steps from the beginning to the end of my painting. Although usually I nearly can't stop when I am "in the flow" I urged myself to stop in between to take the reference photos. No underpainting here and I worked from dark to lighter colours.
This is a painting of the "Canal Lateral à la Loire" (which has a side branch to a little harbour in Nevers). On each side of the water you can easily bike and walk. For this one the most interesting aspect were the beautiful old trees alongside the waterway throwing their shadows onto the water and the sideways.
Mid August usually is the time for me to get into the "France-mood" and pack my stuff to leave for a while. This year everything is different, but as I am thinking about France a lot I painted the Auberge du Pont Canal close to the old and very beautiful town of Nevers in the middle of France.
This is my first dog painting. My best friend shot the reference photo in Schwabach, Bavaria
