Memory of Porto: Lavender in front of Clerigos
Tried to use the remains of the QoR colours of the dot card I mentioned maybe 9 or 10 days ago for this watercolour with lavender in front of Clerigos Tower in Porto. (I don't like wasting watercolours) This is what came out of it. Now again I leave for the fest in town. See you there.

Memory of Porto: Café below the Cathedral
An easy drawing of simple structures for a nice leisurely evening I thought yesterday. It is the week-end and we have this great fest in town. So long.

Memory of Porto: Sonniger Tag
While the weather at home is still beautiful, in the evenings it is getting more and more autumn-like. I often remember the sunny days and evenings we had in Porto. My garden is close to fully harvested - we had an extraordinary fruit year - and I still have to cut out some time for drawing as the weather is still good enough to draw outside without freezing. I am already planning another trip since I am home for more than one month now and I nearly "digested" my last travels - I am "itching" to get back on the road...

Memory of Porto: Statue D. Pedro IV
This is the statue of D. Pedro IV that is located by the cathedral Sé in Porto. I just did this quick one on top of some colours I already had in the background of my Moleskine.

Memory of Porto: Cathedral - watercolour test from goodie bag
Today I come to some item from our goodie bag we received at the symposium. Let's begin with the dot card of QoR watercolours + 3 blank business cards (6,5 x 9 cm of watercolour paper within the card set). I first used the six colours on one of the cards and tried a little direct watercolour sketch of a Porto door while doing different mixes. The colours are very easy to activate by using a wet brush and they are instantly honey-like which means they act as freshly from the tube. As you can see the colour intensity is not as rich as the ones from Sennelier (when dry) for example, but the colours are bright and mix very well (see colour chart). In the upper cathedral drawing I used them. For some of the darker greens I had to use some of my usual Schmincke colours, but all other colours were easily mixed by the six colours provided. It also depends a lot of the paper quality how the colours dry. See the watercolour card from QoR, the colours are very bright. On a simpler sheet of no-name watercolour paper like on my chart below the colours look more dull, when dry. All in all a good experience.![]() |

Memory of Porto: Below the Cathedral
This place which is very close to the cathedral was interesting in any direction. I kept it very simple and tried to do the shadows as learned in one of my workshops. I worked with my Schmincke colours this time.

Memory of Porto: Walled Garden
When I came by here several times I admired the walled garden of a hotel nearby. The walls where covered with beautiful tiles and the garden went uphill with lots of kind of pine trees and the hotel looked like a little castle. This might be something for the next stay.

Memory of Porto: City Hall
This is the centre of Porto with lots of cafés around and I have very good memories linked to this place. I.e. on the last day of the symposium we made a group foto in front of the city hall and I saw lots of sketchers for the first time as there where so many (800+). We also did a group foto of some of the German Sketchers (on my facebook page).

Memory of Porto: A Ribeira Street
One thing I like about painting Porto streets is how theatrical the spaces can be. Steps, plazas, steep alleys, sunlit facades and beautiful shadows - everything is picturesque.
