Ballpoint II / Memory of Sicily - Lion at Teatro Massimo

 

And I did the other lion as a larger piece. It is about A3 size.

Here some background info about the subject: 

The huge lion could be seen in front of Teatro Massimo in Palermo.

 

The Teatro Massimo is the largest opera house in Italy (and the third largest in Europe). It is located on Piazza Verdi (btw. where it is nice to sit and just watch what is going on...). This is at the ancient western gate of the old town of Palermo. It has been built from 1875 to 97 by the architects signori Basile. The two enormous lions are to the right and left of the large steps. I like both lions and this is why I absolutely had to sketch them.

As you can see from the second foto I did a direct to ink drawing for the lion and did a light pencil drawing for the background (because otherwise the straight lines would probably not be straight). A light background in watercolour and then I stopped in between. Took this photo shot as it was time for a coffee anyway ;)

Und tatsächlich habe ich auch den zweiten Löwen auf der linken Seite gemalt. Die Löwen stehen vor dem grössten Opernhaus Italiens an der Piazza Verdi (...wo man auch gemütlich Platz nehmen und die Szenerie auf sich wirken lassen kann.) 

 

Es ist übrigens das drittgrösste Opernhaus Europas und es wurde am ehemaligen Westtor der Altstadt von Palermo erbaut. Beginn 1875 und Fertigstellung 1897 (Architekten Basile).

Rechts und links der Freitreppe befinden sich also besagte Löwen, die mir so gut gefallen.

Wie man am unteren Bild sehen kann, wurde der Löwe direkt, ohne Vorzeichnung mit der Tusche vom Ballpoint Stift gemalt und nur der Hintergrund ist mit Bleistift angedeutet(, denn die geraden Linien hätte ich möglicherweise sonst nicht so gerade hinbekommen). Dann kam als Basis die Aquarellfarbe drauf und dann...habe ich das Foto gemacht und erstmal einen Kaffee getrunken...;)

Ballpoint I / Memory of Sicily - Lion at Teatro Massimo

 

Wanted to test a simple ballpoint pen (I found in my todays mail from one of my suppliers) and as a subject I chose one of the two lions in front of Teatro Massimo in Palermo from photo reference. This is also a bit of thinking back and good memory from my last travels.

I always liked ballpoints for writing and it was no surprise that I was pleased about how the pen glided over my page. I did not do any pencil drawing and jumped into ink drawing directly. Wonderful surpise: The ink did not bleed with watercolour. What a super experience in between my usual watercolours. This calls for more.

Malen eines Löwen mit einem Ballpoint Stift....oder "der Löwe hat die Haare schön..."   ;)

In meiner Post fand ich heute einen ballpoint pen und da ich so ähnliche Stifte zum Schreiben immer sehr gern verwendet habe, wollte ich eine Zeichnung damit ausprobieren. Ich machte keinerlei Vorzeichnung, sondern fing direkt mit dem Tintenstift an zu skizzieren. Als Motiv habe ich mir einen der beiden Löwen des Teatro Massimo in Palermo vorgenommen und war sofort angetan vom ballpoint, denn der Stifft glitt super angenehm übers Papier und die Tinte ist tatsächlich wasserfest und schmierte bei Aquarellauftrag nicht. Eine schöne Abwechslung zu meinen üblichen Aquarellen. Das schreit nach mehr...
