Watercolour Xercise II / Aquarell Übung II: Negative painting of fruit

Again I tried a three colour watercolour with "negative painting".Negative Painting means that you paint around an object to define it.

These are my three colours (plus in the end I used a little light green for the leaves)

 Here are my steps:
  • Made a colour swatch of three colours
  • Did my line drawing of the fruit
  • Wet paper
  • Set the three colours to do their work and encouraged them to mix on the paper
  • Let dry
  • Glazing: Painted hard edges towards the object
  • Let dry
  • Made darker values to shape and put darkest darks in the end

Hier meine Arbeitsschritte:

  • Farbmuster mit drei Farben
  • Vorzeichnung
  • Papier anfeuchten
  • Auftrag der drei Farben
  • Trocknen lassen
  • Lasur: Harte Kanten gegen die Objekte malen, weich auslaufen lassen
  • Trocknen lassen
  • Am Ende dunklere Werte auftragen
Viel Spass beim Ausprobieren

Watercolour Xercise I / Aquarell Übung I: Negative painting of carrots

Around Easter I wondered what I could use as an object for trying a three colour watercolour and try out again a bit the "negative painting" experience and I thought of drawing some carrots out of imagination. "Negative painting" means that you paint around an object to define it (like a stone carver). With this technique you save light on the paper.

This is what I did:
  • Made a colour swatch of three colours
  • Did my line drawing of the carrots
  • Wet paper
  • Set the three colours to do their work and encouraged them to mix on the paper (the quin gold is mainly where the carrots are but I wanted it to mix with the other colours as well)
  • Let dry
  • Glazing: Painted hard edges towards the object
  • Let dry
  • Made darker values to shape and put darkest darks in the end
