Sicily Sketchbook, Entry 8, Castellammare...Pizza Pizza

 

We arrived in Castellammare late, after a little Odyssey on the way. We were thirsty and hungry. An Apéro stop to celebrate of being here again was obligatory and thank god that in Sicily people eat late, we could eat a fantastic Pizza in the main square of the old town of Castellammare. It was still about 25° Celsius during the night, lots of people on the streets and who needs to sleep anyway...

You see that day was more of a travel than a sketching day.

The next day began very relaxed and we headed out to one of the more hidden city beaches of Castellammare. Here is the full double spread:

From day to day I am getting lazier, which means that I use just the tinyest set of watercolours and a waterbrush. The watercolours turn out lighter, because the waterbrush cannot be controlled like a usual brush and does not take as much pigments as with a good brush, but for the holidays I accept this...

Memory of Sicily - Castellammare

 

 

We are having -17 ° Celsius this morning, but the sun is coming out for the first time in weeks, therefore no complaints.

On the other hand we all long for a holiday into beautiful parts of the world. So do I, although I like my own area as well with beautiful snow and sun. Anyhow I miss the people, the warm sun, the sea...

Therefore today a watercolour of Castellammare in Sicily.

Wir haben -17° Celsius heute morgen, aber zumindest kommt die Sonne nach einer langen Zeit einmal wieder hervor.

Tatsächlich wünschen wir uns einen Urlaub an einem schönen, warmen Ort. Ich natürlich auch, obwohl es hier mit dem Schnee und der Sonne auch sehr schön aussieht. Die Leute, die Sonne und das Meer vermisse ich schon... 

Deshalb hab ich heute ein Aquarell von Castellammare in Sizilien gemalt.

Sketchbook Sicily - Mercado de Frutas

I have a few of my new coloured pencils with me on the trip and combine watercolour and pencil to get the effect I want. This is a nice little fruit market in the city of Castellammare. On the way back from the beach it comes in handy to get some fruit. 

Today I would like to tell about the sketchbook I am using for my trip. During the last few months I used a lots of large size like A3 sketchbooks so the limitation to a small A5 sketchbook for Italy is a big difference. It makes me do faster sketches and turned out to be a great advantage. Always having just a few minutes for each drawing in between sightseeing, eating and going out with friends I was happy to have the small Hahnemühle Watercolour Book size A5 with me. I took it everywhere with me in my bag and could use it any time we stopped somewhere. 

I also took a lot of photos which will for sure serve me for larger works in winter time, when sketching outdoors is impossible.

Die Buntstifte, die ich auf meinem Trip, ausser den Aquarellfarben dabei hatte waren eine sehr gute Ergänzung. Der kleine Obstmarkt befindet sich in Castellammare und dort kaufte ich ab und zu Obst auf dem Rückweg vom Stadtstrand.

Heute wollte ich ausserdem darüber sprechen, welches Skizzenbuch ich dabei hatte. In den letzen Monaten wurden meine Skizzenbücher immer grösser und ich benutzte beim Urban Sketching in Hohenlohe und Franken die grossen A3 Bücher und Blöcke, aber für Sizilien dachte ich wäre ein kleines Format möglicherweise besser und nahm ein Hahnemühle Aquarellbuch in Grösse A5 mit. Das erwies sich als eine sehr gute Wahl, denn ich hatte jeweils nur sehr wenig Zeit pro Bild zwischen Sightseeing, Essen und Ausgehen mit Freunden. Das kleine Buch konnte ich in meiner Handtasche verstauen und es rausziehen, wenn wir mal irgendwo sitzen blieben. Sehr praktisch.

Die vielen Fotos, die ich auf der Reise machte werden mir im Winter, wenn man nicht mehr draussen malen kann für grössere Aquarelle bestimmt nützlich sein.
