Malta, Blick Richtung St. Paul's Islands

The sea is very calm at the moment, but the wind is always around. It is getting colder at the very moment when I draw this sight in the late afternoon. I brought a tube of turquoise with me as the shallow waters are shimmering green and turquoise. 

How about a trip to Mdina tomorrow...

Das Meer ist sehr ruhig im Moment, aber der Wind ist immer da. Es beginnt schon wieder etwas kühler zu werden, als ich diese Ansicht am späten Nachmittag male. Für das Meer habe ich eine Tube Türkis mitgenommen, denn das Wasser ist hier z.T. nicht so tief und daher an manchen Stellen sehr helltürkis oder es schimmert grün.   

Wie wäre es mit einem Ausflug nach Mdina für morgen...

Malta, Pirate's Bay, Bugibba

  


















Bugibba is a sympathetic, but touristic place. A lot of hotels are located there and the walkway along the sea is good for a stroll along the coastline. My drawing shows a part of the bight in front of the hotels from my comfortable seat at Café Parrot. I did not finish this one as I went for sightseeing and exploring more of St. Paul's Bay.

Bugibba, der quirlige, touristisch geprägte Ort. Hotels reihen sich an der Bucht aneinander, eine Promenade lädt zum flanieren ein. Mein Bild zeigt einen Teil der Bucht, die den Hotels vorgelagert ist vom komfortablen Strandcafé Parrot aus. Bin leider nicht fertig geworden, weil es ja noch so viel zu sehen gibt an der St. Paul's Bay.

Malta, Abendstimmung

North-westerly view out of my hotel window. Used mainly ultramarine for the sea, the granulating blue in the sky is manganese blue. It is evening already and the sun is going down. Let's have a bite somewhere.

Blick Richtung Nord-West von meinem Hotelfenster aus. Habe für's Meer hauptsächlich ultramarin verwendet und das granulierende Blau im Himmel ist Manganblau. Es ist bereits Abend und die untergehende Sonne spiegelt sich im Wasser. Jetzt geht's zum Abendessen.

Malta, Mdina

Mdina is the yellow city up on a hill. The medieval city is preserved as it was in ancient days. Nowadays the "silent city" does not have many inhabitants anymore but a huge amount of tourists come to this spectacular place. The city is surrounded by very green fields in spring.

Mdina ist die gelbe Stadt auf einem Hügel gelegen. Die mittelalterliche Stadt ist noch vollständig erhalten. Heuzutage gibt es in der "stillen Stadt" nur noch wenige Einwohner, dafür umso mehr Touristen und das ist kein Wunder, denn die Stadt ist ein Erlebnis und das Umland ist im Frühjahr sehr grün und landwirtschaftlich geprägt.

Malta, St. Joseph, Msida Creek

Dear friends, this is my post number 600. Let's celebrate today. You all bring joy into my life and I am very happy to be able to read your comments, encouragements and mails and would like to thank you for your fidelity. My daily fun is to draw and I will not change that. Have a creative time and hopefully we can draw together some time in the future.

This church in Msida is really beautiful and as it is situated in a bight (very close to the capital Valetta) and it can easily be drawn from the other side of the harbour. A beautiful place and if I come here again, I will do one more and maybe have more time to draw.

Liebe Freunde, das ist nun schon mein 600ter Post. Also lasst uns feiern. Ihr macht mir so viel Freude und ich bin froh, dass ich eure Kommentare, Ermutigungen und Mails lesen darf. Ich möchte euch für eure Treue danken. Mein täglicher Spaß zu malen wird sich sicher in der nächsten Zeit nicht ändern, also wünsche ich euch viel kreative Energie und vielleicht ergibt es sich, dass wir mal zusammen malen können.

Die Kirche von Msida ist sehr schön zu malen, da sie sich in einer Bucht (sehr nahe an Valetta) befindet und so ganz einfach von der anderen Hafenseite her gemalt werden kann. Ein toller Platz und wenn ich mal wieder herkomme, dann hab ich hoffentlich mehr Zeit zum Malen.

Malta, Rotunda in Mosta

The city of Mosta is somehow a point you come by all the time when you are on Malta Island. It is an amazing city with an even more amazing church which is a huge dome called Sta. Marija Assunta of Mosta and it is to be seen already from far around the city as it is so huge. It was built by the inhabitants of Mosta and the building works endured about 30 years. For this sketch I used a new to me colour which is organic vermilion - a very bright orange.

Die Stadt Mosta ist irgendwie immer in Sicht, wenn man in Malta herumfährt, denn die riesige Kuppelkirche mit dem Namen Sta. Marija Assunta ist weithin sichtbar, einfach weil sie so gross ist. Sie wurde von den Bewohnern der Stadt in ca. 30 Jahren Arbeit erbaut. Für diese Skizze habe ich eine für mich neue Farbe verwendet, nämlich organic vermilion - einen sehr starken Orangeton.

Malta, Nordküste

Beaches, cultural diversity, country feeling as well as urban flair melt together in Malta into a stress free but very vibrant atmosphere. The architectural wealth is amazing. Even in coastal regions there are watchtowers from the knighthood times but there are agricultural areas as well.

Strandidylle, kulturelle Vielfalt, dörfliche Beschaulichkeit und Großstadtflair verschmelzen in Malta zu einer hektikbefreiten aber dennoch quirligen Atmosphäre. Der architektonische Reichtum ist überwältigend. Sogar in entlegenen Gebieten stehen Wachtürme aus der Ritterzeit entlang der Küste. Im Umland wird jeder Zentimeter landwirtschaftlich genutzt, denn der Platz ist knapp, wie auf jeder Insel.

Malta here I come!

I am in Malta right now and so happy to flee from the cold into warmer weather. A new watercolour sketchbook, my travel palette and a few tube colours had to come with me. I have new colours to try and will tell you whether they work for me or not. I am grateful for this creative time on the Island and that I can report to you my daily adventures. Here is a view of a street in Valetta, the capital of Malta.

Ich bin in Malta und freue mich so, dass ich vom eher kalten Wetter in ein wärmeres Land fliegen konnte. Mein neues Aquarell-Skizzenbuch in Grösse A5, meine Reisefarbpalette und ein paar Tubenfarben sind dabei. Ich habe einige neue Farben, die ich ausprobieren möchte und berichte dann, ob sie mir gefallen. Also dann... ich freue mich auf eine kreative Zeit und darauf nun wieder täglich von meinen Erlebnissen berichten zu können. Hier erstmal ein Blick auf eine Strasse in Valetta, der Hauptstadt von Malta.

Steinbruch an der Bühler

A sketch of the quarry by the river Bühler. I regret having used a simple black pen as the watercolour destroyed the lines in the upper part.

Eine Skizze des Steinbruchs an der Bühler. Leider habe ich keinen wasserfesten Stift verwendet und die Linien im oberen Teil des Bildes wurden durch die Aquarellfarbe etwas zerstört.

Ab morgen werde ich wieder auf Kreativ-Reise gehen, also viel Spass mit meinen neuen Reiseskizzen...

Drei Birken

Wolken am Abend

I tried the Fabriano 640 g paper and did this coastline with big clouds in my studio. Some time ago, while we stayed close to this beach a heavy storm hit the area and the clouds were dramatically coloured.

Das Fabriano 640 g Papier habe ich nun einmal wieder getestet und finde es toll. Während wir damals an diesem Strand waren, gab es einen heftigen Sturm und die Wolken hatten unglaubliche Farben.

Gartenhäuschen

Today just a tiny sketch of a garden hut near OS. Soon it is time for me to do the first garden work.

Heute nur eine kleine Skizze eines Gartenhäuschens oberhalb von OS. Bald wird es Zeit die ersten Gartenarbeiten zu beginnen.

Kreativpause

So honoured having received a song from Manfred via electronic mail during his creative pause while painting. I did not do him justice with my drawing but a certain likeness is there. At least it is a direct watercolour without any linework by pencil.

Fühle mich sehr geehrt, dass ich ein Ständchen von Manfred auf elektronischem Wege erhalten habe, der gerade eine Kreativpause vom Malen machte. Ich habe ihn natürlich nicht ganz genau getroffen, aber eine gewisse Ähnlichkeit ist doch da. Auf jeden Fall ist es wieder ein direkt mit dem Pinsel gemaltes Aquarell ohne vorherige Bleistiftzeichnung.

Der Musiker

This one was made with the help of a photo reference. I tried out new vibrant tube colours. I will do some more tests and tell you about it.

Die Grundlage dieses Bildes war ein Foto. Ich hab neue Tuben-Farben ausprobiert. Ich komme nach ein paar Tests auf dieses Thema zurück.

Rathaus Rot am See - Gruppenausstellung Montagsmaler

Last Sunday we were at Rathaus Rot am See to meet and greet at our Montagsmaler group exhibition. I thought I could sketch a lot during that time, but many people came to visit and I just did a quick unfinished sketch in the end of the day. It shows the Foyer of the Rathaus. Many thanks to our nice visitors.

Am letzten Sonntag waren wir im Rathaus Rot am See, um die Leute zu begrüssen, die unsere Gruppen-Ausstellung (Montagsmaler) besuchten. Ich brachte mein Malzeug mit und dachte ich könne malen, aber es kamen viele Leute, wir hatten gute Gespräche und nur ganz am Ende konnte ich noch ein wenig Farbe aufs Papier bringen. Die Skizze des Foyers ist nicht ganz fertig geworden, aber seht selbst (Doppelseite unten). Vielen Dank an alle Besucher.

Die Butter-Brezel

A very fast watercolour sketch of my morning Pretzel. Tastes so good and is fun to sketch. (direct watercolour)

Ein schnelles Aquarell meiner Frühstücks-Brezel. War sehr lecker und ich hatte grossen Spass beim Malen. (Direktes Aquarell - nur mit Pinsel - ohne vorherige Bleistiftlinien)

Wald in voller Sonne

The sun is back, yeah. It still feels somehow cold but it is more convenient with the sun and the colours are much brighter and the contrasts stronger. Oh happy day!

Die Sonne ist zurück. Es fühlt sich noch immer ein wenig kalt an, aber mit der Sonne ist es sehr viel angenehmer und die Farben sind knalliger, die Kontraste stärker. Was für ein schöner Tag!

Endspurt (one week 10 people)

My reflections on this challenge are the following:

Am very happy to have practiced people although I just did faces and not the whole body - I save this for next time.

I did less people than I expected due to time pressure. But it is not about pressure - it is all about fun, so this is not important.

Did the portraits with solely direct watercolour and loved it as for me it is faster and more fluently.

Found out that transparent watercolour hues are more suited for skin tones. In the end I used mainly a mix of alizarin and ocre with yellows and oranges for the skin. For the hair and darker parts the more opaque colours turned out to be good like Vandyke or Paynes Grey.

Meine Überlegungen zu dieser Herausforderung waren folgende:

Es hat grossen Spass gemacht Menschen zu malen. Ich habe nur Gesichter gemalt und nicht die ganze Person - das halte ich mir für das nächste Mal offen.

Leider hatte ich nicht genug Zeit noch mehr Menschen zu malen, aber der Spaß zählt und alles Andere ist egal.

Die Portraits sind direkt mit Aquarellfarbe gemalt, was mich schneller und lockerer macht.

Habe herausgefunden, dass die transparenteren Farben besser für Hauttöne geeignet sind. Am Ende habe ich meine Mischungen für die Hauttöne hauptsächlich aus Alizarin und Ocker sowie einigen Gelb- und Orangetönen hergestellt. Für die Haare und die dunkleren Partien fand ich deckendere Farben ganz sinnvoll wie z.B. Vandyke oder Paynes Grey.

One week 100 people 2018

The week went so unbelievably fast and so far I did 8 people. All my watercolours from this week were made without prior pencil drawing as I believe this makes for faster and more lose drawings.

Die Woche ging wieder viel zu schnell um und ich konnte bisher erst acht Personen-Bilder machen. Alle Bilder in dieser Woche habe ich ohne vorherige Bleistiftzeichnung gemalt, denn ich glaube, dass ich dadurch schneller und auch lockerer bin.

Netter Versuch...?! Hier meine gestrigen Anfänge ein paar Leute zu malen für die #oneweek 100people Challenge.

Ich habe mal mit zwei Gesichtern angefangen, aber aus Zeitgründen nicht mehr geschafft.

Mal sehen wie es weiter geht...

Tulpen bei -12° C

We want SPRING! This is why we painted fresh tulips in watercolour class last week while outside we had temperatures around -12° C. I did it wet-in-wet pure watercolour. 

Wir wollen jetzt endlich den FRÜHLING! Aus diesem Grund haben wir im Aquarellkurs letzte Woche frische Tulpen in der Vase gemalt, während es draussen noch -12° C hatte. Mein Aquarell wurde naß-in-naß gemalt.  

Segafredo

Today a bigger acrylic painting I did in studio. The location to this painting was Strassbourg. The coffee was excellent...served in a glass.

Heute mal wieder ein grösseres Acrylbild. Dieses Café befindet sich in Straßburg...der Kaffee wurde im Glas serviert und war...ein Genuss...

Das Schweden Café

This is how it should be. Sitting in the Café and drawing what is in front of you. It could not get better... happy weekend.

So sollte es öfters sein: Im Café sitzen und malen, was man vor sich sieht. Es kann kaum besser kommen... schönes Wochenende.

Häuser bei Quinta do Lorde

This is to remind you of our Vernissage tonight. Pop in, have a drink, a good chat and watch the watercolours of our group exhibition. Details in my post from last Wednesday.

Vitamine 2

Again some fruit just for the fun of it. My second fruit still life made from real fruit on the table without prior pencil lines. This time on a 300 g paper. A few days ago I tried it on 450 g. For me it is no extremely significant difference. The papers are both good.

Nur weil es so viel Spass macht: Mein zweites Früchte-Stillleben von echten Früchten auf dem Tisch und ganz ohne Bleistift-Vorzeichnung. Dieses Mal auf 300 g Papier. Vor ein paar Tagen habe ich ein 450 g Papier verwendet. Macht jetzt nicht wirklich den grossen Unterschied aus. Beide Papiere sind gut.
