Richtung Waldbuch

Back in the home country. In order to show something different, below you see me having fun with the above acrylic painting. It was last summer directly after work. I packed my colours onto my bike and found this quiet place. Hohenlohe is so beautifully green...

Canary Islands. Today I wonder what kind of tree this is. It has long brown seeds hanging down (it looks like big beans). They have several of these around Puerto de las Nieves. In the meantime I am at home and this is my last post from my Canarian Sketches. I liked the place very much and certainly will return. In the meantime I will have a look through my photos to do bigger watercolours if I have enough time besides my work. At home: Although we have a cold period at the moment the land is getting greener and greener. So different from the Canaries. My eyes have to adapt...

Kanarische Inseln.

Terraza Angor

Gran Canaria, Puerto de las Nieves, Restaurante Terraza Angor.
Good food, daily fresh fish and friendly waiters. One of them was a lovely lady from Arucas (now living in Galdar which is closer). We spoke for a while and she said she is lucky to have this job and she likes it although she learned something completely different. Due to the crisis she had to adapt. I like it when you get to know the people a bit where you are and it is not that anonymous, which means you feel more "at home". The restaurant is open already for breakfast so it is good for all purposes.

Gran Canaria: On the way to Agaete you already see the Iglesia de la Concepción and everything is very green. There are small private gardens on both sides of the way. If you walk direction sea from here you reach the salt water pools directly.

Santa Ana

The cathedral Santa Ana is located in the Vegueta, the oldest part of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The building has two towers and is the oldest and biggest church of the island. The place in front is guarded by dogs (metal?). Kids wearing school uniforms play ball.

Canarian Cheese

Gran Canaria, Las Palmas, Restaurant El Herreno, the waiters "fly" through the Restaurant and serve outside and in the guestroom while we sit directly at the counter and watch the spectacle around us. We eat the beautiful cheese and have a refreshing beer (Tropical). Then another café solo and we continue our exploration tour through Las Palmas.

Gran Canaria, Las Palmas, Restaurant El Herreno. Las Palmas is the capital of Gran Canaria. In the older quarter of town (Vegueta) we found an old Restaurant which was founded by a man from El Hierro and is called El Herreno.
They serve the typical specialty: Patas de Cerdo. Very yummieee... We stood at the counter when a Canarian couple next to us talked to us and explained the history of the Restaurant. (The man said that he would work at the airport which is why he speeks several languages). The Canarian people are so nice and very open. The man behind the counter is cutting the pata de cerdo (pork meet).

Gran Canaria, Las Palmas, Restaurante El Herreno.

Lots of stones everywhere. The soil is very sparse. Some clouds are around the mountains and behind me there are two great windsurfers in the water. The wind is very strong and the waves are high. From here you can walk all along the shore to Puerto las Nieves. Farther away you can see the street to Puerto de las Nieves.

Salzwasser-Pool

Gran Canaria, Saltwater Pool close to Agaete. The coolest thing is that you can snorkel in the pool as there are some fish inside. With hight tide the pools are filled with fresh water. The day is not very clear so I used some gesso to simulate this. My gesso and water containers for painting in the "wilderness" are very small. I use old contact lens containers for this purpose as all other things are too heavy if you carry them around in your handbag.

Gran Canaria Island. The green valley of Agaete is covered with mist. It is a hot morning, about 24 °C. In the valley there are two coffee plantations. The sea and the saltwater pool is behind me. More about the pool tomorrow so stay tuned.

Gran Canaria.

Dedo De Dios

25 ° Celsius, Puerto de las Nieves. At the edge of town there is this restaurant directly by the sea and a mountain behind it. The beach is not sandy but is covered with big black stones. There are wooden benches everywhere which is comfortable for me to have a rest, look and draw. Below you see me drawing...the photo is in the wrong direction, because the restaurant is on the opposite side.

25° Celsius in Puerto de las Nieves.

The Ferry to Teneriffe just came in with quite some noise. Trucks, buses and cars are waiting to get aboard. It is like in a theatre with a beautiful landscape around. If you want to get closer to see the ferry loading and unloading you can use the mole to watch the spectacle.

This is my Sunday sketch from my comfortable seat at Café Cueva overlooking the bay.  There are a lot of motorbikes and cars coming by and cats are everywhere. I hear loud music from the beach and the waves are calm today. In the background there are green houses for the bananas which are produced here.

The day begins very slow on the Island and the Spanish have their breakfast very late around 11 o'clock or later. They have café solo, leche leche plus dulces or bocadillos. I used coloured watercolour pencils on this Hahnemühle sketchbook which are very handy for this paper. It is too thin to take a lot of water, but quite good with pencils.

Puerto de las Nieves is a small village in the north-west of Gran Canaria: You got the sea, mountains, very nice people, beautiful houses, little parking space and a lot of sun and wind. During the week-end the people from the capital Las Palmas come here to relax thus the beaches and everything else is more crowded than during the week. My drawing was made during the week so I only drew a couple although several people came by and I was not fast enough to get them in. By the way: Happy Easter

From above I see the harbour and the Ferry Terminal Gran Canaria to Tenerife.
The mountains are in the background and change their colour according to weather and sun. The colour of the sea ranges from smaragd green to a dark greenish blue. Everything is calm. The ferry to Tenerife is not yet here.

Weekend in Agaete and it is very hot "in the middle of everything" (according to a young man sitting next to me at another table of the Café.) I got a good view on El Perola Pub with peanut shells spread all over the floor. An old man sat on the stone bench to the left, but I was not fast enough to draw him. He had a cognac and a coffee next to him and he simply went away too fast. So I tried the old lady in the middle, she moved and as she noticed that I drew her she walked away...not my best one ;0)

Laternen in Agaete

There are 3 nice Cafés in the centre of Agaete close to the big church. I sat in one of them (Coffee & Wine) for the Apéritif and from there I drew this lantern, hearing all those discussions in many different languages around and the young waitress with long black hair from Venezuela used to sing while working.

Sardina

This is a small village called Sardina (Gran Canaria). As I drew this the waves were already very high and I sat on a wooden bench close to the sea, the high tide was getting nearer and nearer, my feet were getting wet and my ink was making dots on the paper. It is probably a far better spot to swim than to draw. The café opposite of me was not really open but I was lucky to get a good café solo anyway. Muchas gracias.

Muchas gracias.

Strandpromenade Puerto de las Nieves

Gran Canaria, a very quiet morning. There are nice benches to sit and look all along the beach of Puerto de las Nieves. Behind me there were several nice restaurants and in front of me the huge mountains to the left, the beach all along the promenade and to the right the mole.

I used the postcard size Canson 300g paper which is very stable and handy, glued to all four sides, but I needed several washes of colour as otherwise the colour seemed to be too light.

PS: I looked for the yellow Canarian birds - I did not see any so far. Maybe too much wind

Joke.

Puerto de las Nieves church

New adventure: Gran Canaria. I spent a few days on the third biggest island of the Canaries and was very astonished to see the big mountains so close to the sea. The view onto the church was made from a comfortable roof top terrace which above all was great in the morning. The colours of the small town: white and blue. The brown rocks you see in the distance are the very steep mountains. Their colour changed a lot throughout the day.

Neues Abenteuer: Gran Canaria.

This plein air acrylic painting is from last year. A very beautiful, calm day and all the fields were extremely green with the nice blue dots of wild sage.

Another Sunday Morning Sketching in Vellberg. When I began at 10:00 o'clock in the morning we had about 6 ° C which is still cold for the fingers, but the sunshine and the calm situation on top of one of the towers made it worth the adventure. Time to relax. I had to leave early as I had a rendez-vous! I did not finish the trees and some details on the surrounding walls...

Bar Betancuria

This is the first painting ever I used a golden acrylic colour. Here it fits.  I like the combination of dark red and gold. The bar is quite a good place with live entertainment in the evenings.

La Vie is a river in France which leads into the sea. It is close to where the beautiful Bénéteau boats are built.

Calm Sea

Todays watercolour painting shows a calm sea, but it is still not sunny.

Seascape

Another beach on the Atlantic Ocean in France. I used a lot of brownish colours as the weather was not really nice.

Chatting Lamps

With this painting I was very strict from the beginning and forced myself to leave a lot of white on the paper. The task was to paint lots of different lamps and to combine them in a diversified or interesting manner. (It seems that the lamps are chatting with each other...)
